BREAKING NEWS: I have just announced legislation to create a national database of police misconduct. This is the first of many steps I’m working on in the fight to end police brutality and systemic racism. I'd like to discuss those steps with you now: merkley.senate.gov/news/press-rel…
In 1992, New York City mayor David Dinkin’s (a black mayor) put forth a plan to create an independent civilian agency to look into NYPD misconduct. The year before he had created a commission to investigate misconduct by the NYPD. The Police Union called for a rally to protest. 1
Policing reform: 1. extreme vetting of applicants, 2. extreme training/frequent testing until proper use of force & de-escalation is muscle memory, & extreme accountability when misconduct is alleged. All 3 w/100% transparency AND ALL 3 w/FULL CITIZEN PARTICIPATION! #LetsRoll
For weeks I've called for:
✅ a national standard for use of force
✅ pattern/practice investigations into police depts
✅ indept. investigations into police misconduct

Thank you @CoryBooker & CBC for working w/ me on legislation to address systemic racism in the police system.
