Plebiscites are dangerous and problematic because you are letting the zeitgeist of a given moment in history and the whims and passions of that moment to influence the fate of nations, and national boundaries for centuries to come.

As Edmund Burke articulated, civilization is not the work of a single generation. It is a contract between the past, the present and the future So the "present" influenced by the zeitgeist, has no right to impose radical changes driven by its whims on generations to come
