In our education system, we need to include lessons, like those concerning physical hygiene, that focus on mental and emotional hygiene, that teach how to develop a healthy mind. This is the core of what I call secular ethics.

The purpose of education should be to build a happier & compassionate society. On contrary, we have been told to achieve, to be ambitious. Our mind has been cultivated to be that of an achiever. Our education, culture all depend on this basic idea that man has to be ambitious.

Meditation should be part of the regular school activities. It's not a religious activity. When implemented it has shown a plethora of positive results, such as improved grades and reduced detention rates. Especially with kids from risk groups.

Mental and emotional hygiene are natural byproducts of art, theatre and music education. With public school funds being cut from those areas, the responsibility of such education falls on families, communities and each individual.

Education system should teach students how to be financially responsible with both savings and available credit. Education system should also teach students to be self-employed instead of rely on employers and government for everything.

Social, emotional and intellectual intelligence is vital; people are deep-learning adaptive-feeling socially intelligent compassionate beings who daily need to remind themselves and others of this fact. How? Higher thoughts is the best start: minds universal language. cover pic

Indeed! We need to include the lessons of "how to convert a man into human" because today's education just making a money minting machines where humanity is almost lost. Hope #DelhiEducationModel will focus on it.

Very true. We also need peace literacy to help students develop the tools to build peace including resolving interpersonal conflict, see buff.ly/2DD1SvK for more information.

It should be but until people see things In a new light nothing will change. We the masses have more power to change things but until we stop doing what is dictated vs what betters us as a society our life will just continue to be a cycle of despair and Malice

Our English teacher gave us 13 yo's an assignment that entailed being very quiet & still, to listen to sounds near and far, thinking of nothing else, for 5 mins. Then write about the experience. She was innovative in promoting awareness, way back then, before PCs & cell phones.

Our education system is made for only acquiring jobs. There is no importance for the people who actually want to be a great man by having all the qualities that are essential for this.

Full agreement on this one. Learning to take care of your body is critical to realizing the potential of your mind.

#Change. Education systems, need to include lessons that 'focus on mental and emotional hygiene, that teach how to develop a healthy mind'. No 'health' if no mental health.

Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much & feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness & gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost… #CharlieChaplin

Especially that we can shape our mood by our thought patterns. Teens often claim negative thoughts, then cycle them. Recognizing that & having the tools to change would be of benefit to millions. Peers having words/knowledge to help & support mood modulation would also benefit.

imo you should identify a list of which practices would most-help kids build good mental hygene, then task a group of secular teachers to build curricula & free lesson plans for each grade level... 5 minute lessons or guided practice daily 'til age 10. It would spread quickly.

This and more. Maybe some lessons on mortgages, tax, credit ratings ect? Would have been handy.

Also we need to include lessons on personal hygiene, because nobody wants a sniffy dingle or a crusted over hootenanny.

This is the core of what I call The Lynx Effect.

Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. If physical hygiene becomes it's part, it will be icing on the cake. The society can be made mentally and emotionally hygienic and strong too, with this system

These things were never taught to us in school nor mentioned in any of the textbooks.
Only one man insisted upon our mental health & yoga, that was Raikar Sir from Almeida High School🙏🏻
Though we weren’t interested in it back then but it was valuable💯

Ex-Almeidians will agree.

With all the addiction and drug problems and suicides and the anger and greed that consumes so many, this is brilliant advice. Our school curriculums are so outdated for our times. Teach children how to be at peace, how to be compassionate and kind and the world will benefit.

Once again the Dalai Lama's advice holds true. Even in the world were we have #workplacebullying and need to focus on #MentalHealth. Why @PAGOP and @PADems don't get it boggles the mind.

I read a book called Love by Leo Buscaglia where he talks about how we should learn about emotional skills in school, and I think it is a fabulous idea. How much better we could work together if we understood these important nuances within ourselves and others.

Agreed, but how to teach such in a secular manner? Most teachers already have some type of ... "bias" so to teach and achieve comprehension in a secular manner would most likely still have some religious overtones.
