I woke up to a horrifying, moment in American history today.
And suddenly I shuddered, and remembered this.
This was the horrifying crowd chanting moment of my youth.

Belgrade, 28.02.1989.
Crowd chanting: ‘Imprison Vllasi!’
Milošević responds: ‘I can’t hear you very well.’

‘But I want to respond to your request’, he continued. A month later, Azem Vllasi, the Kosovo politician who dared to defy Milošević, was imprisoned. My life, and the life of all Kosovo Albanians, changed overnight. All fascist leaders need their chanting mobs.

Yeap, Trump's language sounds familiar to me and does not lead to good places. twitter.com/On_Politike/st…

I reported from that rally and remember the faces of the mob. It was well past the famous scene in the Cabaret: they already all acted as one from the beginning

I am so sorry that America is forcing you to relive this. It has to stop.

and what country will swoop in to liberate us once Trump assumes full dictatorial power?

Hey @SpeakerPelosi hark this BEFORE it’s too late. We have a “leader” (sic) who picks on young women and cares only for adulation. #ImpeachTrumpNow

Thank you for drawing this parallel and sharing it.
History repeats itself.
Watch your government.
Some people recognize what happened last night for what it was because they’ve lived through similar experiences. We should pay attention to their warnings.
Notice the parallels:
- Like @IlhanMN now in US w Trump, Azem Vllasi then in Yugoslavia had stood up to Milosevic.
- Both (Omar / Vllasi) elected officials & a natural target for the 'patriotic' fascist mobs; their identities are otherized & perceived as an inside-outside threat.

when? When will it be time to combat the fascism taking root in our government and highest courts? Each day that goes by he is emboldened and your caucus is weakened #ImpeachTrumpNow

The more I think about it and knowing what I know about the fall of Yugoslavia I actually think this comparison is much closer to the current situation than say Hitler.

My heart is breaking for our country. We must keep house, take majority in senate & win the presidency. More than ever before, we need to Defend the Constitution & the Rule of Law. We need another BLUE WAVE in 2020! And VOTE like our LIVES depend on it, BECAUSE THEY DO!

Sorry I don't have a sign for Milošević. I know it's a long time till #Nov2020 but somehow making a complete collectable set isn't appealing. pic.twitter.com/VVSkIWG3Eq

every single person who had to deal with a dictator at one point in their life is reliving through mass trauma and PTSD all over again
Like the citizens who walked into the street during last week's NYC blackout and began to direct traffic, this is a good time to both be responsible and take on responsibility.

It was the worst voice that i ever heard.Kosovo is in our heart we will never forget this animal.

My unit (USMC) was on leave in france when this all started. Spent the rest of my tour doing ops for Kosovo
What followed: Milosevic used bigotry as a reason to kill more people in 10 years than Saddam Hussein did in 25 and Fidel Castro did in 60.

And Democrat Bill Clinton stopped him, without losing a man, and without one single Republican lifting a finger to help him.

Fascists need their chants.

This is not an AC autocrat pool I wanted to win, but here we are.

A great reminder of irredentist and separatist history of Kosovo Albanians that runs into generations. Every politician, as we see nowadays in Spain, has a duty to respond to this kind of criminal behavior and to imprison perpetrators. Thank you Teuta.
This thread. I remember this and it was the beginning of a long nightmare in the Balkans.
History is repeating itself. How close are we to wide-spread violence in America?
We are on a very, very thin edge.
If it's not okay to make Nazi comparisons, is it okay to compare to something else?

A short thread in the fall of Serbia to Milosevic in 1989. "All fascist leaders need their chanting mobs."
Oh yes. My many Albanian neighbors in Hamtramck had very, very different lives after this night.
This is how fascists take over. This is how genocides start. Everyone should be paying close attention.
A reminder that autocrats need their chanting as this thread notes...

You might need to explain this part of history to Americans too....
It’s not just 1930’s and 40’s you resemble - there are more recent precedents
Trump would probably be friends with Milosevic if he was still alive and in power
"Ethnic cleansing" is a precisely accurate phrase for the political agenda of Trumpism, one we should be using more to call it out
And yet, you don't condemn Trump @KenCalvert @TeamCalvert.

He does this exact thing, he endangers @IlhanMN life with this kind of mob mentality and all you do is sit there with your thumb up your butt.
