Every year as we move away from the events of 9/11, I find the images of the towers falling don’t impact the way they use to. I now try to focus on individual stories from that day to help remind me of the emotions I felt. This year I want to focus on the dogs of 9/11

Roughly 300 Search and Rescue dogs were deployed to ground zero. Only 100 were equipped to handle what they encountered. Most SAR dogs weren’t trained to handle large scale operations or urban environments. 9/11 rewrote the training guide for SAR dogs

I have nothing to promote. Many of your local Search and Rescue organizations aren’t paid and need donations. GPS collars, food, gear, and gas are a few of their expenses. Here is the New England group nek9sar.org/donate/
I'm not crying. You're crying.
Thinking of New York today. Everyone who lost someone that day. Everyone who was there and witnessed the horrors of that day. And everyone who has passed since because of the effects of that day. This thread also remembers all the brave K-9 unit dogs. #NeverForget911

This is Omar Rivera and his seeing eye dog Salty. They escaped the North Tower just minutes before collapse. Omar tried twice to set Salty free so he could get out safely, but Salty refused to leave his human behind. #September11 pic.twitter.com/z3z7hxe8Nv

There was an error in this thread I need to correct. While I tried to research every photo, the photo of Appollo is actually of officer Lemma & Felix. It seems Appollo’s wikipedia page used the wrong photo. Lemma’s daughter @lemma_nade reached out to me. Here they both are pic.twitter.com/8wpA93AiOz
This thread.
What did we ever do to be blessed with dogs.

Heard a story that so many dogs were despondent over finding so many dead bodies, after being trained to find live victims. Breaks my heart. Truly, can never forget.

Thank you for this, although you’ve made me tear up, dogs are amazing creatures. They love unconditionally, and serve in the same manner. My girl will be getting extra love today. pic.twitter.com/uIqpg5aKM6

A few days after the event i remember hearing stories about how sad the dogs had gotten because they hadn't found many (if any) survivors. I read that their handlers staged rescues for them so they could find living people. That always stuck with me.
Why do I adopt old and sick dogs?
This is why.
Great thread. Thank you for posting this today.

Maybe if I had read this thread on a day other than today I wouldn't have cried. Maybe. But I doubt it. Such very good dogs.
This thread is everything #NeverForget911 💙🐶

Thank you for this post. I am a long time volunteer for the @searchdogfdn who trained some of these dogs. We will never forget the bravery shown by these dogs and their handlers. 🇺🇸

finally cooled down enough to be able to open doors in the morning. Sirens are blaring and the neighborhood dogs are barking...and my eyes and heart are flooding once again. #NeverForget #NotAllHeroesWearCapes #Dogsof911 pic.twitter.com/e9FLADMYhF

I think @dog_rates should bestow some 15/10s over here....
Please read this thread. ♥️♥️♥️
I had the thought this morning that I’d like to see a thread of 9/11 rescue dogs and you know what, “like to see” doesn’t quite cover the range of emotions this hits… be prepared.
I challenge anyone to get through this thread without emotion.

Thank you for showcasing these wonderful dogs, and telling their stories. We really don't deserve dogs, but I am thankful that we have them.

Thank you so much for creating and sharing it.

all of the dogs i worked with last summer were named after the SAR dogs from 9/11 and post-9/11 and they all live up to their namesakes.
I'm not crying, you're crying. Just a reminder that we don't deserve dogs. Please remember the bestest doggos ❤️
This thread. 😭 Thank you for making this.
Wow this thread.

We really don't deserve dogs.

If reading about these dogs doesn’t bring tears to your eyes, you ain’t human.....
We talk of the humans lost on 9/11 spare a thought for these beautiful dogs who lost their lives in the line of duty in the twin towers

Here are some stories of the "dogs of 9/11"
They have all left us but their spirit & courage lives on

I'm not crying, you're crying!

This is a beautiful tribute to the Search and Rescue dogs of 9/11. Grab your Kleenex and take a moment to appreciate these four-legged heroes (and their handlers) who worked tirelessly to save lives. #NeverForget

As we remember the tragic events of #September11 18 years ago. Take a minute out of your day to read this thread about just some of the K9’s that assisted that day and the weeks that followed. #NeverForget #911Anniversary
We don't deserve dogs Wonderful, moving thread.

Thank you for these wonderful pictures. I hope everyone will look through them. Our world would be so sad without dogs. Adopt a shelter dog today in honor of 9/11.

Awesome doggos helping humans in the aftermath of 9-11🐕❤👇🏻
Dogs on 9/11. See thread.

Many thanks. All dogs go to heaven. How do I know? Because it wouldn't be heaven without them.

Dogs 😭

No one should have to go through any of this, but I’m crying in the Starbucks right now because dogs try so hard, SO HARD, to do whatever we ask of them and I love them all so much.

I don’t understand a lot about what happened at 9/11, but dogs 😭😭😭
Dogs are fucking brilliant best furry little fuckers around, rest easy
This is the best thread on the internet. ❤️ thank you for sharing.
Honestly these dogs and their handlers were among the best of us - working tirelessly to save the living and give families closure.
Thread that is worth looking over immediately.
On this day, as we celebrate the brave men and women who risked and lost their lives, we’d also like to recognize the amazing service dogs who contributed to searching in the aftermath
I couldn't get through this without crying a little.
This thread.
Oyibo really pass us. ❤️
I always think of the rescue dogs 🐶....humans don’t deserve them....they’re what we should be like ❤️
Heroes. Absolute heroes.
Meet the furry heroes from 9/11🇺🇸The Search and Rescue Dogs❤️
Pause for a moment to remember the Rescue Dogs of 9/11.

Patterns were distributed, for people to make booties, as the rubble, glass, & acid tore into their paws. Booties wore out quickly

Dogs suffered the same PTSD trauma as 1st Responders. They would not give up

This thread damn near brought a tear to the eye. Talk about unsung heroes. Clap for the doggos.
Sometime in the intervening years, Search & Rescue dogs started getting better protective equipment.

It’s jarring to remember they all searched the rubble in bare paws & no goggles.
This thread ♥️♥️♥️
Vital and emotional thread
Thread 9/11 dogs 🙏🏼❤️

This thread is excellent.

If this thread from yesterday doesn’t make you tear up a bit, you’re not human.
