Many brands will come from games in the next decade - you build and play a character over many thousands of hours - games cos like @riotgames are investing in becoming a transmedia co - streamers/esports/etc amplify the ecosystem in a world with more viewers than players

Crazy that: - Pokemon merchandise alone puts it in top 5 - sales from Pokemon cards > all Harry Potter movies - >50% of the franchises are animated

Ce schéma me rend un peu maboule. Winnie devant Mickey, wat

Just note the table is showing gross Revenue so it’s not the same as profit. Merchandise generally has lower margins then TV, Video Games, Books, and Movies. A profit table would be more representative of value generated by category.

When people ask why I enjoy Pokemon and I tell them that it's not that weird considering it's the top grossing franchise of all time they look at me like a crazy person because Pokemon doesn't have theme parks or billion dollar opening box office weeks. Yet there it is. Still #1.

"Many created in the past decade." Huh? It's 2019. Nothing on that list was created in the past decade. Only three brands were created in the last two decades.
Merchandise and games topping revenues for top grossing media franchises. Exciting to see if this consumer behaviour will translate (and intertwine) into NFT-based digital collectibles in the coming years as well. @andrewchen
#Pokémon is the biggest selling media franchise - mainly from video games & merchandise. I went down the memory lane, buying an Uncle Chipps packet to hunt for my next Pokémon (Tazo/Jenga Card). Did you too?
#Pokemon #Cartoon #90sKids
Wow, this is incredible - would never have pegged merch as being such huge business for some of these
Or as they say, TV and movies are just content marketing for what they actually sell: the merchandise. And only extreme fans buy merchandise.

I recently launched a Game of Thrones licensed game at Zynga, we also were able to get Star Wars+Harry Potter. These brands keep growing b/c the biggest benefit imo is very low CPI's since you can attract a lot of brand followers then the money gets pumped back into the brand
Quien fuera dueño de pokemon o disney... T.T
Can't understate how "the past decade" piece, especially for videogame franchises.

I have no idea what Shōnen Jump is, but I feel pretty confident that they should start making merch.
Amazing. The lesson here is that children's media does best because it is distilled into iconic form for easy consumption and propagation.
Gosh ....les dépenses dans les produits dérivés Pokémon 😭
Looks like Harry Potter still has a big merchandise opportunity
The real story here is that the sixth highest grossing media franchise of all time (アンパンマン/麵包超人) is a superhero that is also a slice of bread, proving that Japan can market anything.
This is wild. MOYCHENDIZING!
I'm gonna catch them all!

Tror Pokémon skulle vinna rejält om man räkna på priser på andrahands marknaden också 😂

In case anyone's curious how I've spent my money over the last 27 years

Consider this chart. I'm sure that Hasbro has eyes on getting at the top of this list with more than just Transformers. Most of them on this list make money on merchandising.
If the Internet era results in a new religion it will be more like Hello Kitty than the Bhagavad Gita.
Really interesting data!
TIL Anpanman merchandise sales was 3x all Marvel’s MCU Box Office

#hellokitty beats #barbie? There's hope for the future!

thank you for sharing Andrew! I did not know that Yu-Gi-Oh brought in $11B in trading cards 😮 considering that YGO is several times smaller than Magic, I really wonder what Hasbro overall grossed with MTG in trading cards. Must be in somewhat in the $30B
In reply to @andrewchen
Which ones are you seeing as being created within the last decade?
In reply to @andrewchen
My kid is 5 and this is all were about even at that age! It's amazing what permeates!
In reply to @andrewchen
Interesting how pokemon trading card business (which is just 9% of the its revenue) is half of toy story whole business and a third of harry potter's.
In reply to @andrewchen
It would be interesting to see a version of this accounting for margins/profit

Most likely true, Marvel used merchandising for 20 yrs.
In reply to @andrewchen
Makes sense many were created in last 10 years, since old ones that don’t have a hype right now could not be able to make as much 💵 if not adjusted for inflation
In reply to @andrewchen
Was pleasantly surprised to see Fist of the North Star and Anpanman rank that high. Initially thought they were totally underrated franchises, but I guess not :)
In reply to @andrewchen
Really interesting, lots of surprises. Like the revenue breakout, it all makes sense.

wow: OnePiece Manga is 20+ billion!
In reply to @andrewchen
It would be interesting to seperate the revenue from pachinko vs. traditional video games.

Data on sales by geography would be even more helpful.

Hello kitty is the only brand on here without an anchor (Pokémon is based on a game, Harry Potter is based on the novels, etc). That concept has always blown me away.
In reply to @andrewchen
I could've sworn that Evangelion would be up there considering how much merchandise there is.
In reply to @andrewchen
I'm surprised that pokemon & hellokitty are bigger than star wars & marvel. Only 3 of the 25 have their origin in the 21st century. 🤔
In reply to @andrewchen
Somebody needs to break this down by parent company. 33% of these brands (8/25) are owned by @Disney.
It’s interesting to see that Hello Kitty has most total revenue in Merchandise, considering that it came almost 50 years after Mickey Mouse!
One Piece mangaka Oda Sensei has been raking it in for the past 20+ years. From what I've heard in the media and just through reading the manga, One Piece isn't even close to finishing.

Start Wars generated $65B in revenue.

Hello Kitty generated $15B more. $80B total. Insane.

3x Barbie
4x 007
Lo and behold... imagine if hello kitty pulled a Pokémon Go!
Awesome chart. Some surprises in there for sure. Thinking of some of the awesome franchises that could have been as big but didn't quite get to stratospheric levels (Voltron, Street Fighter, Sonic and more)
Super interesting infographic. 5 out of the top 10 are Japanese brands.
Hello Kitty bigger than Mickey Mouse and Marvel universe!
This is a surprising infographic. That’s a lot of hello kitty purses.
