There is concern about sending federal funds to Puerto Rico in every branch of the fed govt due to decades of corruption (inc fed judiciary). Media trying to spin this story to attack @potus do a disservice to everyone working to reduce corruption which has strangled PR #muniland
Mulvaney says they were concerned about sending aid to Puerto Rico "because we thought that" was "a corrupt place." Puerto Rico is part of the US. Mulvaney mentions it as if it's parallel with Ukraine.

yeah Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are deeply worried about corruption. it has nothing to do with the fact that Puerto Rico is effectively a colony and has no rights or way to hold the federal government accountable whatsoever

Absolutely agree, Puerto Rico government haven't learned to date to govern & administrate the territory through the Commonwealth granted by Congress. It's time to go back to when the governors and other officials were directly appointed by Potus. PR needs complete federalization.

Media in Puerto Rico NEVER reported Luis Miranda = Lin's dad, associated with Ukraine topic SEE - Ref. UKRAINE SCANDAL EXPLAINED: Chalkboard on DNC Collusion, Joe Biden, Soros, Trump & More youtube.com/watch?v=5nUZek鈥

Why are American workers paying taxes to be sent to corrupt Puerto Rico to make dem leaders wealthy. No more money to corrupt dem leftist no matter where they are. Period.

In reply to @cate_long
thank you for that. They need to clean up their act first. Glad you are working on this problem. Thanks

No one can deny that corrupt politicians and their "soul brothers" had a prominent role in PR economic debacle. Yet, we are more concern about the shenanigans of the POTUS than cleaning our own house. Seems to me we should keep our "yola" afloat instead trying to sink a crusier.

In reply to @cate_long
Look , Puerto Rico is never going to advance if they continue down same road, its a good thing they are being called out as it was conveniently ignored forever

In reply to @cate_long
It is a wise decision - For decades billions have been wasted by so called administrators

In reply to @cate_long
Cate, that concern is ridiculous, there is corruption everywhere in the US. Starting with POTUS as the most corrupt. This is just an excuse to single out PR so that they can withhold legally assigned funds. They are taking advantage of PR lack of voting power to get away with it.

In reply to @cate_long
Puerto Rico it鈥檚 an American territory where there is an FBI, U. S. Attorney and a large FEMA contingent monitoring misuse of federal money. That鈥檚 a fact not an opinion.

In reply to @cate_long
But, we have to ensure that this administration does not use something that has been happening for decades, as an excuse & hide behind it.

I'd have problems sending Federal money to California at this point, because of how corrupt they are, NY state as well

Note to @maggieNYT The Puerto Rican government is corrupt. She can鈥檛 be that uninformed....can she? #ExposeNYT

cut PR loose and let it be its own independent nation like Cuba .... let them fix their own problems we're not everyone's daddy

Corruption...true....genuine relationships require (more) frequent field visits by top tier interests to improve transparency. As that Maluma song and popular refrain say...."amor de lejos....felices los..." parties involved.

Yes Cate and every one of my friends LIVING in Puerto Rico AGREE and can ATTEST to major corruption in their government. I mean come on! Does NO one remember the protests of literally a few months ago that ousted their governor?

In reply to @cate_long
Gee, didn't a governor or something just resign?

POTUS has little credibility these days when using the "fighting corruption" excuse.

I disagree w/ your take on Mulvaney鈥檚 statements His was just another telling remark that reveals the mindset of Trump & his administration that views Puerto Ricans not as fellow Americans in need of assistance but simply as a 鈥渃orrupt place鈥. This furthers their 2nd class status

I think everyone has reached the end of the road with the man that once said he could shoot someone on fifth avenue and get away with it. His lies and integrity may have brought this on him self. A snowball down hill. Capitol Hill.

Haberman and the rest of them are just so dumb. Trump thinks like us in that we are tired of our money just being thrown away. Trump gets it.

In reply to @cate_long
We all fucking know it isn't about Puerto Rican corruption but rather his beef with the mayor of San Juan and I would assume disdain for poor brown people.

Focus on Trump abusing his office. Turning his back on the Kurds...did you see the pic of a Turkish soldier holding up the head of one of the Kurds? Trump will be impeached, removed and charged...get with the program or shut up!

Maggie has a compromised view of things. She cares little of Puerto Rico if not only for the opportunity to attack POTUS.

Democrats play the Funding Threat games all them time. Should we expel them from Congress? Obama did it when his administration threatened withholding funds unless Schools changed menus to meet Michelle's demands. #FoodFight

Puerto Rico has been given $91 billion, where did the money go?

In reply to @cate_long
Yet they received more than any other disaster area, only to find much has been squandered away.

They are idiots sending our money to these corrupt countries which only lands in Swiss bank accounts and other entities around the world, giving dirty leaders lives of royalty while their people suffer! No no and NO! 馃嚭馃嚫馃嚭馃嚫馃嚭馃嚫馃嚭馃嚫馃嚭馃嚫

US Corp is based out of PR. The 32 billion was a bond deal

In reply to @cate_long
Many of the people and politicians in PR seem to only want to be a part of the USA when it benefits them. They鈥檝e taken their Puerto Rican independence seriously enough to try and kill President Truman, and to bomb Fraunces Tavern in New York City.
