Christopher was Middle-earth's first scholar.
Silmarillion! #RIP
As chair of @TolkienSociety this must surely be the very saddest day for me and all of us. Christopher Tolkien was a titan of fantasy and his legacy will live on forever.
The last of the Inklings has died.

His long, slow, faithful work in opening up the history of Middle-earth to us reminds me of Gandalf:
“The rule of no realm is mine. But... I also am a steward.”

And now the last steward has surrendered his office.

Though here at journey's end I lie in darkness buried deep beyond all towers strong and high beyond all mountains steep above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars forever dwell: I will not say the Day is done nor bid the Stars farewell. -Sam Gamgee in the Tower if Cirith Ungol
Don't let the small hats anywhere near the lore!
Wow, fantasy just lost a legend. He did an incredible job carrying on his father's legacy.

A staunch defender of his father’s literary heritage.

"Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it...White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise" Safe Travels Christopher 🌅
GANDALF: Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.

PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?

GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

So sad... thank you Christopher for continuing your fathers work and your love of Middle-Earth. You will be remembered.
We have lost a great man today and the steward of Tolkien's legacy for the last 47 years RIP Christopher and prayers to the Tolkien family

One of the Ainur is gone. May Manwe grant him a chair in his halls at Mount Taniquetil. My condolences to the whole family. #christophertolkien #tolkien
We owe him a real debt of gratitude. R.I.P.
A keeper of the flame that brought - and continues to bring - so much inspiration to the world of roleplaying games. The Steward of Middle-earth, gone now to be with his parents Beren and Lúthien in the Undying Lands.
Our condolences to the Tolkien family from Chaosium.
A sad day for all who loved the wider, deeper world brought to astonishing life in the Silmarillion and elsewhere. Your contribution will never be forgotten.

Namárië, faithful Steward of Middle Earth.

He sails to Valinor, the Undying Lands, Aman the Blessed. A wonderful custodian of a magnificent legacy. Resquiescat in pace.
JRR Tolkein's son, who has played a key role in consolidating and editing much of his posthumous work. He heard the story of The Hobbit as a young boy, and drew the original maps for The Lord of the Rings.
Imagine growing up listening to J.R.R. Tolkien spin tales of hobbits, elves, and wizards. What a remarkable life. Perhaps he and his dad are discussing their next novels over tea right now. May God continually bless the Tolkien family.
In reply to @TolkienSociety
I feel happy that the 21st Century got to share some time with him
We are very sad to hear of Christopher Tolkien’s passing. He was the greatest advocate for his father’s works, and his scholarly legacy is immense.

A very sad loss Indeed 😪 Tolkien’s works were a huge impact in my reading preferences in my late teens and up to now when I’m getting pretty close to 60. My Tolkien shelf in my library 👇 pic.twitter.com/y2Mj5w4QNn
What a force. Christopher Tolkien's contribution to fantasy has been less recognizable and public but nearly as impactful as his father's. Let's mourn, yes, but let's also celebrate this great man!
We wish a fond farewell to Christopher Tolkien, the cartographer of Middle Earth, and send our deepest condolences to the Tolkien family.

"And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.” May it be so with you, Mr. Tolkien.
RIP Christopher Tolkien, long the steward of Middle-earth
thank you and farewell, christopher 😭
This is remarkably sad. Much of Middle Earth and its history would not be known to the outside world without Christopher Tolkien.
In reply to @TolkienSociety
Requiescant in pace + May he be received into the light of the uttermost west and there be reunited with his beloved father.
In reply to @TolkienSociety
RIP Christopher Tolkien, sincere sympathy to the family. He was a remarkable scholar, meticulous and insightful to his Father’s works. I still have not finished HoME and mean to.
Christopher Tolkien gave up a promising career to dedicate himself to his father's legacy.

Its almost impossible to imagine Tolkien scholarship without him, or to imagine a better steward of Tolkien’s literary works.

We owe him a great debt.

'They will look for him from the White Tower but he will not return from mountain or from sea.'
Thank you for devoting your whole life to the world of Arda. May the stars shine upon your next journey.
In reply to @TolkienSociety
Very sad. But an unbelievable innings. Takes a humble man to dedicate his life to someone else's work. I think of all the books that might never have been published without Christopher's input. Some of those books define how we now view the professor's legacy. Thank you sir 🙏
Now back to Eldamar he has returned, Joining his Father in Valinor, Singing and dancing in the everlasting Gardens of Lorien, While the Valar are watching over them❤︎
Their Music and purpose, are the Silmarils, and to those who listen, Shall will never be lost or forgotten❤︎
Aww man. Brief: the only time I ditched school was in 7th grade. I ended up at mall & Macy’s where I stole the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books, hidden in my puffy jacket. Ya, ditched school to steal books? Also, yes, Macy’s used to sell books. RIP
Rest in peace. What a gift he gave the world in his service to his father's legacy.
Goodbye and godspeed to the man without whom the Simarillion and so much more would not exist as it does today. RIP
Sad to hear about this. Tolkien tirelessly worked to preserve his father’s legacy and was also a highly achieved man in his own right with his translations and edits. He leaves behind a huge body of work.
In reply to @TolkienSociety
It's rare to find a literary executor who so lived up to, and expanded the reach and scope of the someone else's work. He was a champion, scholar, veteran and devoted son. RIP.
This has really shaken me. End of a legacy. The Silmarillion helped me through a painful time and is one of many works that wouldn’t exist without Christopher Tolkien’s tireless editing and collating of his father’s writing. He also drew the original LOTR maps. Thank you, Namárië
May his memory be eternal! What a gift this man gave the world.
At least he wont have to suffer through Amazons new LOTR tv-series....
In reply to @TolkienSociety
If it wasn’t for his dedication & hard work we would never have The Silmarillion and all those fantastic tales of Middle-Earth — Beren & Luthien, The Fall of Gondolin, Feanor, Children of Hurin & finally the Akallabeth without which there would be no @LOTRonPrime RIP Christopher.
Rest In Peace Christopher Tolkien. The world has lost a true scholar and gentleman.
In reply to @TolkienSociety
I always felt that, odd as it may seem, Christopher Tolkien did as much for the Middle-Earth universe as JRR did himself.

A great man who will be missed. "Together we will take the road that leads into the West / and far away will find a land where both our hearts may rest"
Aw, no. That’s the end of an era. No one loved his father’s work more or did better by it.
This may be a Wheel of Time account, but Christopher Tolkien has passed away. The son of JRR Tolkien, who had edited dozens of Middle-Earth texts, deeply influential on the fantasy genre and myself in general.

"Tai'shair Gondor."

Day is ended, dim my eyes, but journey long before me lies. Farewell, friends! I hear the call. The ship's beside the stony wall. Foam is white and waves are grey; beyond the sunset leads my way. Foam is salt, the wind is free; I hear the rising of the Sea.
We're sad to hear of the passing of Christopher Tolkien today. He carried the torch of Middle Earth well, sharing with us the histories and further works of his father.

Ah, Christopher Tolkien has died. As a big part of the structure that enabled me to absorbed his father's work so much when i was younger (the books specifically)...

After a goodly, long life tending to his father's smial, Christopher Tolkien has taken a cart to the Grey Havens. A small, Elvish ship has left the docks of Mithlond and headed west, into the mists, and on to Valinor.

It's a sad week for England
He did so much to expand the world of Middle-Earth and to bring his father's other writings to light. RIP.
Rest in peace😭
This Silmarillion lover is eternally grateful for the work he did. 💗

Christopher Tolkien has passed onto the White Shores. I’m so grateful for his life and work finishing his fathers books. The Silmarillion and others.
I’m so thankful for Christopher’s work in preserving and advancing his father’s legacy. Cheers.
DEP Christopher.
I loved LOTR so much. Thank you Sir

Way before the popular movie trilogy, I was a huge fan of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. I have fond memories of not being able to put the books down, and reading them late into the night with a flashlight under my blanket during the summer before 7th grade.
Deepest condolences to the Tolkien family. Tolkien fans everywhere owe Christopher an incredible debt of gratitude for his lifelong devotion to bringing the full history of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth to light. Thank you, Christopher.
