45 years ago today, a little radio station called Double Jay was born.

Later in 1980, the station moved from the AM band to FM, and became @triplej

Here are our very first moments on air 🤗

Great memories of Triple J with John Safran.👏🤝😁

What a moment. What a legacy. What a past, present and future. ❤️

Bring back the era of public broadcasting when everyone was a hippie and clearly stoned. Even the camera man is on one.

Apparently @joeledgerton1 was a radio DJ before he got into making movies. (Apologies Holger)

*A proud moment in time. I was an ABC commissioner who led the way for the ABC to present rock music. JJ and Countdown. Extra funding from Whitlam Government .Senator Doug McClelland first minister for media.Exciting times. Kevin Jacobsen OAM

Amazing, I’m excited to join the Double J team this year 😁

This man was definitely smoking The Devil's Lettuce

🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

This is great to see.

Best way to signal that you’re here to make a change? Kick off the station’s life with a Skyhook’s song that had been banned from commercial airplay. Happy anniversary @DoubleJRadio!

Holgar Brockmann. What a legend.

“Nervous” coz just played a banned song?

I remember driving around Sydney in the days immediately after the launch. Everyone seemed to be listening to 2JJ- shops, service stations, the kids in the car next to yours at the lights. Whitlam Government had given the youth of the day a voice of their own.

Happy birthday darling x

Holger is a legend. Honoured to work with @ABC_NewsRadio

I didn’t know Skyhooks’s “Good in Bed” hit was the first song to be played on JJ, but how perfectly appropriate. Love it!
Happy Birthday the Js!

It was so great when it started. I listened to my sister's transistor radio under my pillow late into the night. I loved it.

Holger Brockmann - legend! See also Gayle Austin, George Wayne and, if memory serves, Tim Ritchie. They revolutionised my musical thinking and experience. Happy Birthday Double Jay 🎂🎼🎧 - and thanks, Gough ❤️

Mind you, I reckon JJ saw itself as a tad more musically “serious” in its early years than Radio Luxembourg had. JJ was the only radio station worth listening to if you were a lefty young fella in Sydney!

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
I think that SKyhooks song got played cos it was banned on every other radio station

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
And now Triple J plays politically correct garbage 🤦🏻‍♂️

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
JJ started a few months before I moved to Alice Springs from Sydney. I loved it. Somehow reminded me of Radio Luxembourg when I was a kid in England.

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
Oh gosh this is priceless! Love everything about this clip 😉

Happy birthday, guys. You did us proud and blew a way through for local musos that wasn't possible before.

Bring back the caftan for all radio announcers and #podcast hosts

Are recordings of "Nude Radio" (from folks of the Aunty Jack show) that played on Sunday afternoons still in existence?

Happy Hatch Day Double/Triple J 💪🙌

Anyone born after @DoubleJRadio was started has never known a year of cooler than average temperatures. #auspol

Later in 1989, anger about it going national led to Oz activists to invent social media first via Seattle theconversation.com/on-the-battle-…

Listened to this when it happened, still listening today. Thank you to the jays 💙

1540 MHz... hard to pick up in Erskineville but great night time reception in Exmouth!

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
So far down the FM dial, they had competitions to win *transistor radios * that could reach that far. And cigarettes everywhere.

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
And is still being run by Boomers.

About a week later, phone call from Sydney music store: "Tell the Minister 2JJ is working. A bloke from 2UE keeps rushing in asking for latest local release. Turns out he's been set up to get what double j is playing to air within half an hour." Success! Oz music lives!

When I was transported as a teenager from Europe to Australia I was shocked after hearing commercial am radio. Three months later in early 1982 the older sister of a neighbour introduced me to JJJ and saved my life!

I was listening to double j for the first time in 76 , while working in the snow, stumbled on and still listen to triple j although love double j digital now

We had a school work experience program in 1978 and I got asked where I wanted to go, so I said Double J, they looked at me strangely and said that would be hard, but I got there. It was awesome.

This is so awesome!

Do you still have turntables in the studio like that?

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
It was 1981 when they moved to FM

And what better than a 'controversial' Skyhooks tune to kick off with!!!

I recall that 1st broadcast well - in fact with so much great ‘non-Top 40’ music around, I confess to being disappointed with #DoubleJay ‘s choice of launch track at the time.

William St. Sydney studios?

Our hippie household in Stratford all got up early to hear it. It was bloody wonderful

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
Tim Rodgers hasnt changed a bit.

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
The dulcet tones of Holger Brockman. A voice that was unmistakable. I was hoping you might have vision of Chris Winter, who was the true founder of JJ.

In reply to @DoubleJRadio
Nice but I remember JJJ only coming to Perth in 1989!

In reply to @DoubleJRadio

The beginning of our national musical broadcaster

Studio has changed a tad?

Some of the same equipment is probably still in use given lack of funding!
