It is unusual for SDNY prosecutors to refuse even to meet with a potential cooperator.

I met with many potential cooperators -- some worked out, others didn't. But I'd almost always at least hear them out and assess what they had to offer.
Just in: Parnas attorney @josephabondy has claimed in a new filing that prosecutors have “refused to meet with Mr. Parnas and to receive his information regarding” Trump, Giuliani, others. Could explain Parnas’ recent decision to go public. H/t @TomerElk scribd.com/document/44363… pic.twitter.com/TgvOUqKZ63

Sometimes you might get an attorney proffer about what the potential cooperator would say and based on that decline to meet, no?

I would ask @lauferlaw and @DirkSchwenk opinion here, because on the face of it, this appears a strange way for SDNY to be acting

There’s this from WSJ stating they met with SDNY:

“At a meeting with prosecutors, Mr. Parnas’s attorney disputed that he pushed for the removal of the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine at the behest of a Ukrainian official.”

Whatever Parnas has - SDNY, perhaps, uninterested right now

Surprised that a former federal prosecutor is so willing to accept a defense attorney's claims at face value. (Parnas and his lawyers have met with SDNY, per WSJ)

In reply to @eliehonig
WSJ reported that Bondy was also arguing that Parnas would not admit he was directed to oust Yovanovitch by a Ukrainian. So my guess is they think he's lying coming in.

Did Barr give instructions for them not to, and that's why Lev went to Rachel? Lev's lawyer should drop EVERYTHING THEY HAVE ON THIS TONIGHT. Let the Senate deny the evidence that's out there, the people will know more that way if Senate won't allow witnesses.

What is going on with the SDNY?
I smell dirty Barr.

I can think of only two possible reasons for this. 1) They think Parnas is so unreliable he is not worth their time. 2) William Barr has something to do with this--maybe he is blocking the SDNY from hearing Parnas.

In reply to @eliehonig
The entire executive branch is compromised.

In reply to @eliehonig
Is it just me or are we so deep in corruption in this country that nothing can save us?

This is why Parnas went to Congress. We no longer have a federal criminal justice system. The DOJ now functions outside of the law as a dictator's secret police agency.

In reply to @eliehonig
SDNY is now under leadership of Trump appointee Geoff Berman.

In reply to @eliehonig
Billy Barr is behind this. And why is the IC refusing to hand over important documents for the Impeachment. @PreetBharara

In reply to @eliehonig
I actually thought he went public because he’s worried about “going through some stuff” 🤔🤔🤔

In reply to @eliehonig
Bill Barr’s orders?

In reply to @eliehonig
Could Barr be preventing any consideration for a cooperation agreement?

In reply to @eliehonig
Giuliani is being protected by Barr.

Lev Parnas came to the US in 1975. when he was only 3 yrs old. Parnas started with the Trump Org. in 1988 selling timeshares. In '95 Parnas moved to FL & stayed at Trump properties when in NYC. I now realize why Lev Parnas is terrified of being "Epstein-ed" by Barr if in custody.

In reply to @eliehonig
Increasingly difficult to see SDNY as other than compromised.

Head of SDNY- Berman “Upon President Donald Trump's firing Preet Bharara as U.S. Attorney, Trump reportedly interviewed Berman among other candidates for the position.Berman had performed some part-time volunteer work for the Trump transition.” Wiki

Parma lawyer claimed in a new filing that prosecutors have “refused to meet with Mr. Parnas and to receive his information regarding” Trump, Giuliani, others. Could explain Parnas’ recent decision to go public

In reply to @eliehonig
this smells of Barr

In reply to @eliehonig
Unless Firewall Barr put the kabosh on it.

In reply to @eliehonig
I think this comes from the top of the DOJ

In reply to @eliehonig
Once they hear what he has to say and review evidence he has they cannot in good faith pretend that they have not. It’s the DOJ Barr form of denial and avoidance

WOW. @JerryMoran @SenPatRoberts Aren’t you even a bit concerned about what looks like very serious corruption in the judicial branch?

In reply to @eliehonig
Something smells bad if SDNY REFUSED TO MEET WITH PARNAS. Why not meet with him. He sure appears credible to most of us who saw his interview with Maddow. He has much to tell about the corruption of Trump & he has documents to corroborate what he says.

In reply to @eliehonig
I'd bet your DOJ wasn't headed by Wm. Barr

Prosecutor Berman in SDNY is corrupt.

In reply to @eliehonig
Barr's stubby fingers in the pie?

In reply to @eliehonig
Berman SDNY is on Trump & Barr's team. #ComplicitTraitors

Hmm. Prosecuters refusing to meet with someone who has information and wants to cooperate? Weird, huh? Wonder if Barr has his fingers in that...?! (That's all rhetorical...😃)

In reply to @eliehonig
Barr is a co-defendant at this point

In reply to @eliehonig
Is there any leverage / power to force recusal? Or is it 100% Barr’s discretion?

In reply to @eliehonig
Well, when Barr isn't fellating TrumPutin, he's behind the curtain, spinning the dials ...

In reply to @eliehonig
That’s why Lev came to the media. He was afraid Barr would take/keep all his information/receipts to keep it from getting out and not let him out on bail. He was also afraid of the ‘Epstein Effect’. #LetLevSpeak #ImpeachedForLife

In reply to @eliehonig
BARR’s name is all over this. #BarrisanEnemyoftheState

In reply to @eliehonig
Barr or Berman have spoken! @SDNYnews

In reply to @eliehonig
Like the former DOJers who sang Barr's praises when he was appointed AG - despite his part in Iran-Contra pardons - you former SDNYers need to face the fact that office is dead.

In reply to @eliehonig
It’s headed by AG Barr, the process is rigged—

In reply to @eliehonig
It’s not unusual at all. If the USAO met with every defendant facing a long sentence, claiming they had valuable info, they’d never have a chance to prosecute a case. The majority of those claiming “valuable info” have nothing more than what’s already known

In reply to @eliehonig
Barr is implicated, big time. That's why they don't want the information.

In reply to @eliehonig
They creating plausible deniability for Barr. Whatever SDNY learns is imputed to the AG. If they don't receive his information, then they don't have knowledge of it. I'd bet that a FOIA request might show communication from main DOJ to SDNY ordering them not to receive the info.

In reply to @eliehonig
Barr is controlling the narrative and ordering the silence of anyone who may damage Individual 1.

In reply to @eliehonig
Looks like Barr’s fingerprints on this, just like the Epstein suicide!

In reply to @eliehonig
Mr. Parnas's attorney is making an excellent effort to keep his client safe and in a position to get the best possible deal for his misdeeds. I like him.

In reply to @eliehonig
I wonder why ? Barr said no ?

In reply to @eliehonig
Bill. Barr. Is. Compromised.

In reply to @eliehonig
I say the Democrats listen and take the information from Mr. Parnas. I feel that he was USED by Rudy & Trump for their own use and now are hanging him out to dry. It looks like Mr. Parnas has great recordkeeping & his info should be taken seriously. @RepAdamSchiff @RepSwalwell

In reply to @eliehonig
It would be interesting to know if Parnas’ counsel said that Parnas would refuse to admit the crimes charged in the indictment or if he would refuse to discuss any other prior crimes. Those would both make cooperation unworkable in SDNY.

This is so odd, that SDNY refuses to meet. Maybe they met before.

We are missing something.

In reply to @eliehonig
Bill Barr is obstructing SDNY.

In reply to @eliehonig
Is this William Barr with his thumb on the scale?

In reply to @eliehonig
This is what happens when a GOP senate approves a corrupt AG. Now even they can't speak out for fear of reprisal from Trumps AG. The GOP sold their soul to Trump, lets hope 4 of them finally stand up for democracy. Or is democracy up to Roberts now? @Scotus @SenatorLankford

In reply to @eliehonig
I thought Barr couldn’t get to SDNY

In reply to @eliehonig
Or Berman was on Trump's transition team and doesn't want Parnas to speak?

In reply to @eliehonig
Unbelievable traitor Barr.

In reply to @eliehonig
Why wouldn’t they want to hear evidence... 🤔🤔🤔

In reply to @eliehonig
The DOJ is refusing to investigate crimes involving Trump and members of his cabinet. Bolton and Parnas need to testify in the House and Barr needs to be impeached asap.

In reply to @eliehonig
Elie, could you give an overall summary of what Chief Justice Robert's legal measures in the impeachment trial are [i.e., what actions he and/or cannot do]?

In reply to @eliehonig
It’s bc Barr has ordered SDNY not to. It’s sad that none of the justice depts in this Country are immune to the Trump/Barr stronghold. I thought they were different. Shame!

In reply to @eliehonig
remember when everyone was so sure that SDNY would hold the Trump crime machine accountable? Barr is getting his dirty slimy hands into the entire DOJ

Hey @SDNYnews Berman, compromised much? First suiciding Epstein and now not giving Parnas justice?

You mean you were never Barred?

It explains SOOOOOOO much

In reply to @eliehonig
Guessing Barr put up road blocks since Lev Parnas testimony incriminates at the highest levels... president, vice president, Barr himself, and many others. Explains why Patnas was on MSNBC trying to make information public as quickly and widely as he can.

In reply to @eliehonig
Yup...because it was a set up by Giuliani, Trump, and Barr to arrest and silence Parnas and Fruman.

In reply to @eliehonig
Can an AG be arrested?

In reply to @eliehonig
Unfortunately not the first sign that @SDNYnews has been compromised... Hopefully those working there are aware that things are amiss and working to fix, or whistleblow.

In reply to @eliehonig
1) The SDNY has already met with him. They probably just don't want waste their time. 2) The insinuation here that Bill Barr is somehow stopping them in nonsense. The SDNY is fiercely independent and noway would they sit idly by at such a gambit.

In reply to @eliehonig
Consigliere Barr is flexing his muscle. Even more reason we have to beat them bad and get a new attorney general.

In reply to @eliehonig
Is this likely to be Barr interceding to stop the SDNY guys from talking to him?

In reply to @eliehonig
It's time! For @SpeakerPelosi to get to the TRUTH. We can always handle the truth, lies hurt everyone.

In reply to @eliehonig
SDNY > Berman > Barr > Trump. Enough said.

In reply to @eliehonig
and what should all non-lawyers think about the so highly praised SDNY now?

In reply to @eliehonig
Very odd and suspicious indeed.

In reply to @eliehonig
SDNY probably has more than enough to put Parnas away and they know Parnas is looking to deal. How about Parnas pleads guilty first and then he can deal to lower his sentence? If I had their case I wouldn’t be clamoring to give him a deal. Make him accountable first.

Shocker S.D.N.Y. maybe bought off. I'm flabbergasted...said no one.

There is no law and order in American government as long as Trump and the Republicans are the ruling dynasty.

😎🤔 Not that surprising considering the fact that after Trump attorney Kasowitz donated to Cyrus Vance's reelection campaign suddenly investigations into fraudulent dealings of Ivanka & Don Jr were dropped.
Hold the Trumps accountable!
#DrainTheTrump #Bribery #Corruption

Let's take Fascism justice out for a spin

👇If true SDNY attorneys refuse to meet with Parnas what is their reason? SDNY no more Trump’s personal attorneys than is Barr so should have no conflict of interest with Trump because Trump is not their personal client.

SDNY’s duty is to meet & listen to potential cooperator.

In reply to @eliehonig
What kind of reasons might cause them to refuse?
