So, the North Sydney Mayor tells #abc730 the North Sydney pool was entitled to receive a $10 million grant from a regional sports grants program because people from regional areas use the pool when visiting Sydney. #auspol

Well this Mayor has another view...
I鈥檓 really angry. We (small rural shires)are struggling to maintain the pools that are so important to our rural communities. They are all at least 50 years old and in desperate need of upgrades. And we get nothing. We are so ripped off .

I don鈥檛 reckon I could find a single resident or councillor in rural Australia who would agree North Sydney is 鈥榬egional鈥, but I could find plenty of sporting organisations who鈥檇 like some of that $10 million

Well some of those Mosman Rowers need a place to warm down after their exertions in their new taxpayer-funded, non-merit ranked facility. Mosman surely counts as a 鈥渞egion鈥.

So @ScottMorrisonMP defunded the victims & survivors of DV of its $240k & gave $10 million sports grant to North Sydney - one of Australias 10 most affluent suburbs! Australia, how did so many vote for this? abc.net.au/radio/programs鈥

Quirindi Pool in regional Northern NSW near Tamworth is slated for closure. It was debated today at the local Liverpool Plains Shire Council meeting. Suggestions made is to close and everyone travel 15klm to a small town, Werris Creek pool. Quirindi has 3000 residents.

Ballina Shire Council had to borrow $14million and put up rates to renew our two public pools. No regional sports funding for us.

Maybe we get too many visitors from Sydney...weird huh?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Five stars.

In reply to @mjrowland68
So by the same reasoning regional areas should be given grants from an urban congestion fund as city types clog up our roads when they drive through our towns.

Imagine having the chutzpah to make this claim. When I was a kid in Dungog, we had a family season pass to our local council pool every year. We swam in the river too. But we never used a pool when visiting Sydney. Regional grants aren鈥檛 there to improve cities! #abc730 #auspol

I live in a marginal electorate.

I have sent a submission to @ScottMorrisonMP asking for ten million dollars.

Because I don't have a swimming pool.

But when it's built, you're all welcome to use it when visiting.

And it's BYO, unless the grant for beer money is also approved.

It鈥檚 true. You go there. Thousands upon thousands of regional people leave their dying farms every week for a quick dip before returning to put down their live stock. Thank god for the mayors of Sydney who consistently think of the welfare of people they don鈥檛 know or represent.

In reply to @mjrowland68
Overseas visitors swim there too. Perhaps we should have given North Sydney the whole overseas aid budget.

So, Quirindi pool is about to close. But #CorruptNats #MickMack says all good, North Sydney pool has $10mil regional grants cash. #Barnaby is of course nowhere to be seen to fight for Quirindi because he couldn't give a rats about his constituents...#NewEnglandVotes why? #auspol

At what point are criminal charges going to be laid? This isnt a rort anymore. Its theft. And it should come with a jail sentence for those involved.

I KNOW!!! I saw this on @abc730 tonight and I was so angry. The program was supposed to be supporting rural and regional communities. Huge thanks to our ABC for its political news coverage. #NorthSydneyOlympicPool #SportsRorts #abc730 #auspol

The city of Wollongong often misses out on government grants as it鈥檚 not considered regional yet a pool sitting right under the Harbour Bridge is regional 馃し馃徎鈥嶁檧锔

TEN. MILLION. DOLLARS. In a rich nation where a million children suffer housing and FOOD insecurity, where 10s of 1000s are homeless, where #FirstNations die a decade too early, and #DV rages. @mjrowland68 we need all dots to be joined on #LNPVoteBuying and serious #ElectionLies.

Swimming pool that sits on the harbour is regional, but Wollongong is metro.

Hrrmmmm

North Sydney is not eligible for a regional sports grant and the Liberals aren鈥檛 good economic managers etc.

In reply to @mjrowland68
It鈥檚 a shame our media weren鈥檛 reporting this when it could have made a difference.

In reply to @mjrowland68
Rorts and more rorts... just imagine... had this been done by Labor....This Government is beyond despicable!!

In reply to @mjrowland68
How is it that Australian taxpayers are expected to accept this malarkey?

I guess people from regional areas don't use pools in Sydney's Labor electorates.

Corrupt government is corrupt.

馃うA level of insanity has seeped into the political discourse.

It鈥檚 true. We haven鈥檛 been able to shower properly for months, so have been arriving in *busloads* to have a proper scrub. Soz about it.

Federal ICAC is essential to restore some ethics and accountability. Both major parties are against one. Why?

In reply to @mjrowland68
Bullshit, never heard such rubbish. The libs are such liars. At that rate inner west council is out in the country. Soon to have a rodeo

In reply to @mjrowland68
It's corruption. We desperately need a Federal ICAC. It's not a matter of waiting for the next election and voting them out. Our electoral processes have been corrupted by this rorting. If it's not stopped we won't get fair elections.

In reply to @mjrowland68
I walked past it a few months ago while visiting from Brisbane so I guess it was money well spent.

As crooked as a dog鈥檚 hind leg. We need to build a special jail for crooked politicians.

Think about the implications of what this would mean if indeed, it was a reality.

Any business that had visitors from any regional town / area would be entitled to "regional" funding.

Just ridiculous.

In reply to @mjrowland68
Yes that looks like a pool that would be eligible for a Regional Area grant!

In reply to @mjrowland68
Just wondering if the govt deliberately called them Regional Grants so non govt politicians in city seats didn't realise they would also be eligible to apply, providing they had regional people visit their electorate?

In reply to @mjrowland68
Sure glad those bleeding heart latte sipping inner city lefties in the Labor party didn't get in. They don't understand the needs of country folk

The other thing about this excuse is that it is absolutely insulting to everyone鈥檚 intelligence. Not even Christopher Pyne would try and get away with this one

In reply to @mjrowland68
It鈥檚 corruption, Michael. Does @gavmorris allow you to use that word when describing #sportsrorts ?

In reply to @mjrowland68
She was pathetic. Trying to justify a dodgy grant by saying that. She should resign.

Hmmmn ... seems legit. So can our cracking, leaking, crumbling, concrete outdoor pool only open 4 months a year - not invited to apply for tender for upgrades - hosts 1,000s of city tourists Can our Rural Council apply for "City-based grants" on this logic?

That鈥檚 cool. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is regional too. Regional people have seen photos of it.

Almost every day this summer my kids and their mates had the time of their lives at the Gunning pool, particularly as usual swimming holes had dried up. No fancy facilities or change rooms, just your standard 鈥榬egional pool鈥, in a state most Sydney-siders would not tolerate. pic.twitter.com/SREAbHIeKT

It is unmitigated corruption. But we seem to be saying this on a daily basis.

Who knew? Qld, there's a pool for us in North Sydney. #qldpol #auspol twitter.com/mjrowland68/st鈥

In reply to @mjrowland68
Oh. And city people visit the Yackandandah pool. So we should get urban funding.

In reply to @mjrowland68
We have a lot of visitors to our pool in Warracknabeal over summer. Can we please have $10 million? We are actually rural, not in Sydney.

God love a duck!!!!

In reply to @mjrowland68
We live about three hours from Melbourne, it beggars belief North Sydney received funding, furthermore the thieving and brazen cronyism is so entrenched they don鈥檛 even try to cover it up. We need an integrity commission with big teeth, retrospectivity and 馃挵. #LiarFromTheShire

In reply to @mjrowland68
If it looks like corruption, walks like corruption and smells like corruption then it's time journos call it what it is. If this was a labor government you can be sure they would be screaming it from the rooftops

Serious if slightly Seinfeldesque question.
What's the deal with public figures just doubling down on completely stupid stuff?

As a person from a regional area 6 hours from Sydney, with a terribly dilapidated public pool, I can assure the Mayor of North Sydney that should I ever visit her pool it will not be with the intention of swimming.... 馃

Regional people use Sydney Airport or WestConnex/M4 when visiting Sydney. So does that make them eligible for regional airport and road funding?

In reply to @mjrowland68
Let's face it, the stench of corruption from this government is overwhelming. And nobody can do anything about it while they maintain a (slim) majority. If only one or two decent LNP members would do the right thing. If only there were one or two decent LNP members. #auspol

In reply to @mjrowland68
What about the small communities that were eligible but missed out because they were not liberal enough? How does the Government explain this to them? Or are they just not Australian enough, pentecostal enough, white enough, rich enough?

In reply to @mjrowland68
Ok. The pool that still awaits building at Phillip Island should have received some of that money on the same basis. I think there might be more tourists on the Island than at North Sydney.

In reply to @mjrowland68
In my 52 years living in Sydney I never once swam there. Heck, even when I worked around the corner from it I never swam there. I gave up my lane for visitors from regional Australia.

Thanks for putting the absurdity into words, Michael.

The major needs to brush up on her vocab and appreciate that regional sports grants mean located IN THE REGIONS not in the inner city. Country people must be outraged. They need genuine people representing them-not this corrupt LNP government. #abc730
