I guess what I still don't get is, after all this time, how someone wouldn't instantly think, "Wait, isn't this just going to constantly incentivize arguments? Won't people correcting a loud and wrong person, then going back and forth, be first in perpetuity?"

The social media polarization problem is not complicated.

Polarizing content drives engagement, engagement drives reach, ergo the most polarizing content becomes increasingly prevalent.
