Sandra Mason became Barbados' first president, replacing Queen Elizabeth as head of state.

It comes almost 400 years after the British colonized the island and enslaved over 380,000 people on its plantations. The queen is still head of state in 15 countries, mostly ex-colonies.

.@Rihanna was named a national hero of Barbados as the country became a republic and removed Queen Elizabeth as head of state. PM Mia Mottley said at the ceremony: "May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honor to your nation by your works, by your actions."
