I always recalled that the Night of the Diva episode of The Wild Wild West, my introduction to Lucia di Lammermoor (and Patrice Munsel), was a Michael Dunn episode, but I guess not.

It's too bad that Donizetti couldn't figure out, with the Mad Scene, how to suddenly go complete atonal; that would have been a blast.

I agree with you. The public would've crucified him, though, and he was a showman to his core. I think of him and Rossini and Verdi — early on — as closer in spirit to musical theater guys like Rodgers & Hammerstein. Wagner liked Bellini, though, cuz he would *almost* go there.
