Blimey, this letter to the FT from a former Treasury Minister under John Major doesn't pull any punches on the Truss /Kwarteng economic strategy

Britain is a world power - by standard measures either the second or third most powerful country in the world. Saying Britain is not a world power implies that no-one other than the US is. Which cld be a thing to say but tell us nothing useful about the 2nd rank world powers.

If Truss wants growth the first thing she should do is renegotiate a trade deal with the EU giving us far better unfettered access to the SM

I fully agree. The Cons were on their last hurrah 12 years ago, until the 鈥楻W ERG tapeworm鈥 spotted the populist narrative opportunity of chauvinist 鈥楤rexit鈥 propaganda, aided & abetted by toxic Tory-client press & media. They鈥檙e now revisiting that existential crisis! It鈥檚 over!

I wish the @FT would provide a digital forum for their letters page, and elevate the importance of readers' contributions to debates and articles ...There are excellent letters to the FT... only made prominent in the printed edition.

Within this, note the point about reducing incentives to invest in property - one serious structural problem we need to address.

And look at the mess he made of it. ERM and do fourth
#UK no longer a world power 鈥.and yet

What a pathetic, withering and whingeing letter. It鈥檚 not like John majors gov was the pinnacle of governance. I don鈥檛 agree with current gov but this is weak.
In reply to @hugh_pemberton
Absolutely spot on....this country has been poorly governed for years.
Note the reference to reducing "incentives to invest in property rather than productive assets" - the exact opposite of what National are proposing. (For the record, restoring interest deductions should only be done in conjunction with taxing the capital gains).

We can only live in hope that we have seen the last Tory government. We as a country certainly cannot afford another such as the current one.
In reply to @hugh_pemberton
he definitely won't vote tory in the next election
this, this and more of this....
This sums it all up very well. Sadly.
This is well worth a read:
Brutal. Tories will end up hated.
I have to agree with everything here (including the aircraft carriers 馃様) we need a massive reboot, root and branch, an adult discussion about our place in the world, no flag waving and looking back, time to unchain ourselves from our past, that's the Britannia unchained I want.
Ex Treasury Minister Ridicule鈥檚 Liz Truss Fantasy Spin Economic鈥檚.
I know Brexit is Catastrophic. But Destroying the 拢Sterling拢 isn鈥檛 going to help U.K..

Mr Oppenheim sounds like a bit of helmet inclined to never ending genuflection.
Hoping for people of UK you get your quantum shift in political landscape soon as Australia did in May this year. PO's letter 馃憦, Aust is in a better place because it's people threw out prev Govt after almost 12yrs of toxic corrupt stagnating career politicians. @acgrayling

John Major is a total disgrace. Since losing the EU Referendum he has done everything he can to undermine Conservative Government to try to push through his own agenda. Luckily he just comes across as a manic weirdo like Alistair Campbell.
Bloody good read - Especially if Truss is the last Tory PM

Wow!!! Obviously old tories were much much better鈥

Oh should Liability Liz and Calamity Kwasi be the last can you include Joker Greasy Cat in the great expunging of Tory madness

Boom with an er. Some will get it.

How in your tiny little mind come to that conclusion. No one will know until 23rd what else they are proposing. This is what they have done & why so far. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/鈥
In reply to @hugh_pemberton
Petulant whining.
In reply to @hugh_pemberton
He was part of the problem
This from a former Tory minister. We can only hope
In reply to @hugh_pemberton
Yes. The FT has been - politely- frothing at the mouth for a very long time now.

If Britain isn鈥檛 a world power save the USA who is? China ? Is that it ?
A love story? 鈥榃hen Arrogance Met Dogma?鈥 What else could we expect? Kwarteng and Truss are two of the five authors of 鈥楤ritannia Unchained鈥 (2012). A manifesto for planned inequality; for levelling down #TrussUnchained @Conservatives really?
In reply to @hugh_pemberton
Hugh, I agree, this is common-sense, a quality many of our politicians lack; the money this country wastes in overseas adventurism makes me shudder, we can't even afford to put combat planes on the decks of the two giant aircraft carriers Labour commissioned. pic.twitter.com/9Uio8AniR5
A lot of good points in this letter
Very interesting, but how do I save when my income is limited and I need to survive. Do you think that giving 50K to already wealthy people will transform into investments?Or since they are catching up to Croesus, will they just put it offshore until the time they see the bottom?
In reply to @hugh_pemberton
I know ya all know this, but it's worth reiterating that if counted as a country, the state of California would be the fifth largest economy. And it has only 2/3 the population of the UK.
In reply to @hugh_pemberton
If only we didn't keep building aircraft carriers.
1/3 ANDREW BAILEY AGAIN There appears to have been CASH OUT RUN - Dodgy unsafe, worthless, illiquid, derivatives, securitisation of mortgages & other 鈥淪O CALLED鈥 financial instruments with 鈥淪O CALLED鈥 underlying assets that are either none existent, worthless and/or unrealisable

Question for @RestIsPolitics. How might "mini-budget" have been different if UK had #PR on Sep 23rd?

As you'd like to talk about benefits of #PR this one is for you @RoryStewartUK

Wow from one so previously highly positioned !!
Some finally said it
