On this day in 1960, Ruby Bridges became the first African-American to attend a white elementary school in the South.

A visual reminder of what she faced every day.

Ruby bridges thought everyone was there for Mardi Gras and that she was going somewhere important like college. She didn’t fully understand what was happening till another student told her that he couldn’t play with her because she was black and the next year it was just over pic.twitter.com/lE9VVdlsaC

This is why they want CRT banned: so you don’t learn the racism your parents and grandparents willingly engaged in pic.twitter.com/zEzDdyOkaj

Imagine, this was only 62 yrs ago. Today Ruby Bridges is 68 yrs old. The white girl holding the sign up & a majority of the children of the adults seen in these pictures are most probably still alive too. But people will tell Black people to move on & get over it.

My mom was raised in Birmingham, AL during the civil rights movement. That nice, sweet, loving person told me "you better not bring home a white girl"... Can you blame her?

Do not ever mistake compliance with equality

We always hear the story of the brave black men, women & children on how they faced bigotry and hatred. but somehow the faces of those who perpetrated it never get flushed out.Can we find out who these people are? they should be named and forced to bear the cross of their hate.

This is what bravery looks like!

Remember some of them are someone’s grandparents and most likely is still alive!!

In reply to @AfricanArchives
Who are thos men protecting her? The secret service??

I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that this was only 5 years before my mom was born and 3 years before my dad was born. 😳🤯

In reply to @AfricanArchives
we see their old/grown-up faces at MAGA rallies

If this seems like ancient history, Bridges is the same age as Jerry Seinfeld

I just want to hug the little girl that she was, it’s heartbreaking. I am grateful for her and will never vote for a racist. I will speak up for a POC being verbally abused by a racist. Those are things I can do.

Ms. Ruby is still alive. So is Leona Tate. This isn’t distant history. It’s contemporary.

We had our Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day at Hartford Sylvia Encinas in @ChandlerUnified. twitter.com/i/web/status/1… pic.twitter.com/KWEDmYXlsf

This wasn't long ago. Ruby is still alive today. She's 68. pic.twitter.com/Xpc2ropcCq

The older I get, the more I want to see a documentary about the white people protesting in photos like these. We get told the story of the heroes but the villains are gifted anonymity.

What makes me so sad is that little girl carrying the sign saying she wants an all white school. She was taught that from and within her home.

Elle ne mangeait et ne buvait pas à l’école par peur d’être empoisonnée, mais t’en a qui diront qu’ils font les victimes alors que c’était y a seulement 60 ans

And most of these folks are still alive. We have senators old enough to be the adults in this photo… more still who are old enough to be that girl. Don’t tell me racism is a thing if the past when the racists themselves are still here presently.

It’s interesting how the people who are advocating and demanding inclusivity, equity, and equality are framed as trying to indoctrinate the children, and yet throughout history (and today) we see parents doing exactly this to kids but with hateful ideologies, and this is okay??

This was only 62 years ago. There are several people alive today who would have lived through this. Very hard to simply get over.

In reply to @AfricanArchives
Anybody know where that lil girl with the sign at?? I know she still here somewhere

Holy cross school in Belfast springs to mind. Where grown loyalist men and women pissed in bottles and threw them at catholic babies going to school.

I just want to remind folks that this is still very much recent and not long ago. Ruby is still alive and many still especially kids to young adults from 1960 are still ALIVE. They voting, working, running the country & much more!!

Also, posted in colour as usually racist images are posted in black and white to fool you into thinking it was a really long time ago. This is in your parents lifetime.

And yes Ruby Bridges is still here with us✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

My Domme namesake.

The degradation didn’t stop with the riots outside of campus walls - the white teachers of this school except one refused to teach her, and she spent an entire year in a class of one

She walked past death threats & harassment daily just to learn. A child

She got the worst parents ever

human beings man - we treat each other so poorly

Ruby Bridges is still alive today. Let’s you know how short of a time ago this was.

Ruby bridges is still alive btw! just about the age of my grandma, only 67 years old.

I’m very surprised the internet detectives haven’t done a where are they now on this yet.

1960 was not that long ago too, that’s insane

Ruby Bridges is around my mothers age and I always think this could’ve easily been her had she grown up in that part of the country at that time. Always make me sad/angry when I think about this.

We've all seen the top left hand corner, but the bottom right? That's not at the Book Fair! This ain CRT. This is real US History.

Ruby is only 68 years young. Many who were there are still alive.

😂😂this is actually still very recent...highly probable that most of these people are still alive and evil

Le livre sweet sixteen est inspiré de ces faits, lisez le il est vraiment bien

It’s truly insane to think about how recent this was.

In reply to @AfricanArchives
American and British are worse racist people

In reply to @AfricanArchives
OMG humans can really be lowlifes. I’m sorry to anyone who ever suffered this kind of treatment due to the color of their skin or their religion or their gender orientation. But to do this to a six year old child you have got to be the worst humanity

a senhora tem agora 68 anos btw. metade dos vossos avós são mais velhos que ela ;)

Fearful that I might never leave in peace as a black person , too much harm was done to us and is still inflicted upon us, I feel sick thinking that this was not even centuries ago

Everytime I see stuff like this it make me realize how disgusting white ppl are… & I’m pretty sure if they had a choice most would still be like this…

My Mom was 9 or 10 at the time

In reply to @AfricanArchives
That's why it's so important to never forget our history.

In reply to @AfricanArchives
awful racist fucks man is she still alive today

The thing that scares me most is that people like this still exist. They’re just not openly hateful anymore. Racism is not gone, it’s just hidden.

I could only imagine what was going on in Ruby Bridges's mind going through this racism every day just for being a Black girl in a White school.

In reply to @AfricanArchives
We should’ve stayed segregated and in control of what our babies are being taught…. Nobody understands me when I say this though 😔

Never forget that we as human beings have come so far from moments like this. YET we have to also understand that mentalities like this still exist and have passed on to children and grandchildren. We as a people have to continue to come together with empathy! To raise a better

They don’t wanna teach CRT or show these pics in school cause some of y’all might see familiar faces

Hey Terfs

This is what you are

Wanted to add that this is not the distant past. Ruby Bridges in her 60s today and working as a civil rights activist.

How would y’all feel about being segregated rn & building more Black Wall Streets?

Little white girl here is actually marjorie taylor greene can you believe it

This is the first piece of art I see everyday when I get home. It's a constant reminder to keep going, keep going, keep going...

Thank you Ruby Bridges. 🙏🏿 pic.twitter.com/gJjBICEdpJ

Integration killed us aka the black community smh

It’s still insane to me that this was only 62 years ago.

They never talked about this in School
Cause this is what you called "HISTORY"

NINETEEN FUCKING SIXTIES

This was not that long ago.

Racism isnt ancient. It's been going strong and still it RECENTLY

Horrific, even more so that Ruby Bridges is alive today (and only 68) this is in living memory, not some horse and cart throwback

Ces photos de manif me donnent la nausée.

I’ll never forget them using grey pictures in our text books to make it seem like it was a different era. Meanwhile it was like 40 years ago, from when I was school.

A reminder that Ruby was only 7, facing racism alone.

Они были правы.
Я не хочу, чтобы мои дети ходили в одну школу с чурросами и цыганами.

Every time I marvel at the bravery of that little girl

Tanto odio me genera este tipo de discriminación. Las personas de piel oscura son tan superiores en muchos sentidos 🛐

I don’t think I’ve ever seen any of these photos in color

Integration is a moral sin……. That’s how some people thought and some people still do feel this way about black people. 🤯🤯🤯🤯

Biden fought to keep us segregated too. Something about not wanting kids to grow up in a "racial jungle" but everyone glosses over the fact that Dems wanted segregation.

In reply to @AfricanArchives
Ruby Bridges, tava tentando lembrar sábado

We should make sure that people do not forget. This is now 62 years ago but these actions are often not recognized by those who "do not see colour" while there are still people who lived through this era.

And Americans are the integration champions of the world?

“Integration is a mortal sin.”. 😑

Just one of the many reasons, why they want to ban books and erase history.

#RubyBridges #History #knowyourheroes

integracija drugih ljudi, koji nismo mi, je smrtni greh!!!

Most of these people are still alive and are now talking about how “everyone is so sensitive now days!!”

Why would you put your kid in harms way like this honestly I would never go we’re I’m not wanted 🥹

Wish we can identify all of these white people and their offspring

Who is going to apologize and 💰 for this🧐

White people are insane.
The girl top right is probably 68-72 rn and boring Republican 😩

I’m all for segregation!!! I don’t wanna mix with nobody who has sex with dogs and smells like them ! Scoot and Scyattt YALL stringy haired asses on 😵‍💫
