. @maxwelltani got the internal slack messages from AP and .. certainly seems like the responsibility for this debacle isn’t confined to the fired reporter semafor.com/article/11/22/…

Poor reporter just took the brunt of a management decision. Not surprising but sadly disgusting.

Those editors almost triggered World War 3 and kept their jobs

If nothing else, it should inform journalists that being FIRST is not necessarily the most important point.

Based on these messages, how is he responsible at all?

In reply to @jonathanvswan
. Yup. In fact, when asked to ‘work it up’ he demurred and replied: “What I passed is all I know at the moment.” .

Confined to the reporter? He explicitly said that the decision to publish was not his to make (I don't even think he weighed in on it). If "above my paygrade" was confusing to his editors, they need to replace the editors since their grasp on the English language is weak.

Single sources of information should be noted as such and the lack of confirmation in this case should’ve been the first part of the headline and the story.

This is crazy time shit. Way above my pay grade, but if this is how shit happens at AP is just plain wrong.

seems like this decision rule would benefit from unique language for: source vetted for this story & source once-upon-a-time vetted for another story
