Not surprising at all when you consider that Irish America traces its roots to that 19th century exodus from Ireland to America caused by the Great Famine.

At the end of the Great Famine over 25% of the population of Manhattan was Irish born. In fact New York City held the largest urban population of Irish born people anywhere in the world, including Ireland.
