Recently had my first patient come in hypothermic because they couldn't afford their heating.

There's going to be more, isn't there?

Sadly yes. And my local council is about to hear a Tory motion about spending money planting trees to commemorate the fabulously wealthy late Queen and her fabulously wealthy heir. I’m definitely going to say no. I want the money for warm hubs and food banks.

Not an ideal suggestion, but using a cheap but soft (velvety) fleece blanket directly between body & winter duvet & 2 more on top-yes in the day too, makes a huge difference. Soft ones feel warm unlike the non soft ones. I call it *nesting*. I'm hb a lot & that's how I keep warm

Yep we had to turn a ladies heating on the other day - when we attended she was very cold. We made her some hot food and made sure her bed had a warm duvet on it - Paramedic

Sadly, yes. As well as those suffering from damp-induced respiratory illness, such as from mould. Not forgetting malnutrition because they can't afford to eat, either. This, in one of the world's richest countries, except that the wealth resides in the pockets of very few.

Heartbreaking. Spoke to a respiratory consultant earlier in the year who predicted it, noting he’d not seen it since the 90s. Hard to imagine/accept in this country

The 70 s all over again. So many elderly with hypothermia…awful. Once had to get fire brigade to break in to try to rescue an old boy who sadly died in his freezing cold house. Shocking to see this again.

My dads house is freezing, I’m forever nagging at him but he’s rather sit with a blanket, his wee wife stays in her bed mostly. Existing not living. My dad is a dialysis patient and just by with a severe flu (hospitalised) got home a week later only to be admitted again 😢

Even without switching on my heating, my electricity has quadrupled in cost. I'm a pensioner. Even with all the govt "help", I will not be able to heat my home, the money just stops me going in the red. Until the next price increase. "A land fit for heroes".

For info: Loosing the ability to touch each fingertip with the thumb on the same hand is an immediate pointer that the body is suffering Hypothermia. (given there are no arthritis difficulties being experienced)

In reply to @iowmillie
That’s really upsetting 😭

Been to a couple of cold places. Dreading more of these calls 🚑🚑

In reply to @iowmillie
Lots more It’s not even winter yet

I'm a community MH nurse and every single house I've been in for the last 2 weeks have been freezing.....patients with several layers of clothes huddled under blankets 😞😥 just awful!

Tory UK for you the poor will die from hypothermia While MPs will sit back in their cosy warm homes that the public purse pays to heat.😷🤬

In reply to @iowmillie
It’s awful. People are just existing rather than living. There are going to be many hypothermia related deaths this winter I fear.

In reply to @iowmillie
ageuk.org.uk/latest-press/a… Been happening for years, save the elderly during covid but any other time they can freeze every winter

but still we gotta support the USA proxy war in Ukraine, Oh that isn't the reason fuel prices and food prices are where they are,,, tell me more.

In reply to @iowmillie
Germany, uk, us, ukraine..our energy sources are primitive 50 effing years ago.

In reply to @iowmillie
Have you had a gas bill lately, unfortunately your going to be inundated

In reply to @iowmillie
It's going to be a hard winter. Probably a lot of people aren't going to feel it except in their pockets. Of course, there are others that will feel it and can do nothing about it. I wish there was more advice for those in the middle though. Planning can help surely?

In reply to @iowmillie
Yep. We’ve got people off ill at work with worry over finances and that’s going to increase too isn’t it? 😔

In reply to @iowmillie
Sadly yes especially now we are getting into more realistic temps for this time of year

In reply to @iowmillie
But that's a common presentation thid time og year amongst the frail elderly who live alone...not necessarily becos of cost of heating

In reply to @iowmillie
Yes there is. Im afraid most likely millions more to come..

In reply to @iowmillie
This is awful. It shouldn’t happen in this day and age.

In reply to @iowmillie
Those are the lucky ones, there’ll be those that don’t make to your surgery.

In reply to @iowmillie
I have Peripheral Neuropathy, slight changes in temp result in the feeling of liquid dripping down my lower legs. Also have Raynaud's phenomenon. Winter is going to be tougher than usual. Currently testing how much it costs to put CH on for an hour. 85p so, we may be ok 🤷‍♀️

Waiting for the ... We got through the miners strike and winter of 47. 63. Ice on the windows brigade.

Expect to see it on more death certificates too. Preventable, but not prevented due to government policy decision.

In reply to @iowmillie
I’m horribly afraid there are.

Omg! What century are we living in?

In reply to @iowmillie
That’s distressing. I doubt you’re wrong but I hope you don’t see more.

I saw this recently- not sure if it’s just a trial scheme…linkedin.com/pulse/could-nh…

In reply to @iowmillie
That's so sad Millie. And I guess the only place u cld send her in the end was back home. What old people go thru and put up with

I fear we are going to see much more of this over the coming winter ☹️

In reply to @iowmillie
Hypothermic? Really...? Hyperbole maybe...?

Oh yes - it's not looking good!

In reply to @iowmillie
Here's hoping they make it through your door as sadly some poor souls won't 😢

In reply to @iowmillie
Have we taken back control yet @BorisJohnson

In reply to @iowmillie
Malnutrition + hypothermia soon 😢.

Just dealt with my first patient in this situation. It's heart breaking.

In reply to @iowmillie
Sadly yes because the weather so far has been reasonably mild - the next couple of weeks are getting colder. People don't realise it only has to be below 10C for a prolonged period if people are sedentary to potentially become hypothermic.

In reply to @iowmillie
Utterly heartbreaking 😢

In reply to @iowmillie
Sure glad that degree helped.

In reply to @iowmillie
Sadly yes, I am particularly concerned that December is currently forecast to be much colder than usual.

We've had patients say they're warmer on the ambulance than they are at home.

Sadly lots more!
I can afford it but I haven’t put my heating on much yet!

Yup, Ukraine, Russia. Nothing to do with a thoroughly incompetent uncaring Government. Or #Brexit. #HeatOrEat #GTTO

While we have these soulless, evil, narcissistic tories in power there will be.

Oh yes. This is what everyone should read.

Staying warm: What does an unheated room do to your body? bbc.co.uk/news/health-63…

In reply to @iowmillie
It's going to get much worse !!

In reply to @iowmillie
Worryingly we haven't even felt the true bite of winter yet either 😢 There will be many fatalities

In reply to @iowmillie
Let me guess you’re a Labour activist?
