Spain just avoided an early elimination against Croatia, left out a big contender (Germany) from the tournament and choose to play the quarter final against Portugal instead of Brazil. All they had to do was losing against Japan. One of the biggest moves World Cup has ever seen.

For those confused: If you had a top down view or even a side view you'd see that part of the ball is still over the plane (think football breaking the plane of the goal line). The bottom of the ball may be fully out but the side of it is still in

We love what football is always about. It was made in a round shape pic.twitter.com/zrrMw9T8IE

That ball isn’t fully out of bounds… it’s a good goal.

I don’t understand how so many outlets are saying it should not have counted.

It’s a sphere. The ball is round. The side of the ball is still over the white line.

That’s about as close as you can get, yeah, but it’s in.

This was literally out, this is a disgrace to football, just like how inexperienced the female officials were in the Germany match…

Still don’t know the essence of Var if they couldn’t see this.

I’ve never been grateful for the fact that a ball is a sphere

If Germany depends on this call, then they do not deserve to be in the round of 16

This is a clear attempt to stop Germany from qualifying. So sad. This is tantamount to match fixing.

The female referee knew exactly what she's up to in the match against Germany and Costa rica

In reply to @ESPNFC
You can clearly see the whole ball isn’t out.

These balls have sensors which detect many things. Do you really think if the full circumference of the ball passed the line like it won't be detected with the appropriate action taken? Maybe, Germany just needs an excuse to justify their failure.

Realllllllllly wish I didn’t see this

The ENTIRE ball has to go over the line

Reckless tweet. I don't see green between the line and the ball.

How is it not out of bounds though. We need explanation @FIFAcom @FIFAWorldCup

They should've taken their chances to win the games without relying on other teams win or lose . It's well deserved for them 💯

It's out, 100%! Germany should be put through and Japan sent home, but that won't happen, so fair play Japan, hope they beat whomever they get in the next round

I think all football segments FIFA, premier league, la Liga etc should tell us before each march starts what's the basis for judging a goal with respect to a line crossing when the ball is still in the air or on the ground.

Well, only if it's ruled out now after the game ends, if it was ruled out at the time then you don't know if Germany would be moving on because the game wouldn't be over.
