83% possession, 1058 passes doesn't mean shit if you can't put the ball back in the net! pic.twitter.com/tJCtxrTMrY

BBC"Match of the day"では「(最新のトレンドでは)ポゼッションに何の意味も無いことを証明」。

My husband woke up at 5:00 AM to watch this match. 🎉

Incredible. Give Japan credit. They beat Germany and Spain, powerhouses of world football. Definitely a threat in the next round #Japanwin

Japan beat Spain with 17.7% possession, going 2-0-1 for the tournament.

“The Jesuit Order” = 177, 201

They went 2-0-1, and Spain went 1-1-1, 11 months 1 day into the year.

An example of quality of quantity?

Croatia be like... fuck.

Also worth noting: Croatia faced Japan three times, twice at the World Cup. Won in 1998 (1:0, Å uker) and drew in 2006 (0:0, Darijo Srna with a missed PK). Single loss came all the way back in 1997: 4:3 in the Kirin Cup final. #FIFAWorldCup

Pero tuvieron la "posesión", dicen.

Possession means nothing if you can’t create and Spain did very little after that.

This is how Guardiola's Manchester City would be reduced in England when club football returns and teams would win not by possession but by potency and tactics.

Sterile ball possession IS NOT THE solution. Controlled offense could be the solution. Guardiola'a Barcelona mastered this game, perhaps 2010's Spain did as well. This does not suffice in football. You have to create occasions to win!
