Now the the group stage is over, worth taking a second to recognize what FIFA has destroyed by expanding the World Cup to 48 teams. That last round of simultaneous group games creates more drama than possibly anything else in sport. Now it’s gone. Never to return.

Never to return until the 64-team World Cup brings back perfect symmetry to the format. So, in 2038? '34? Making football truly global.

One suggestion for 48 teams in 4-group teams I've seen is to give the best 8 group winners a bye and 16 teams left to play in the first knockout round. If byes start getting used more generally, it would make a more gradual WC expansion possible.

Jesus man, relax. Things change.

La doble fecha final de la fase de grupos no debería irse.

8 groups of 6. 5 pool games each. 1 extra week to tournament. Top 2 in each grp get thru and knockout is like it is now with top 16. 5th pool game can be simultaneously played.

Surely they’ll have a rethink. The 3 team group idea would create so much collusion and unsporting moments and this must make them realise that. It’ll surely end up with 4 team groups and an extra round 🙄 (with some byes)

Probably it was discussed a lot. it was possible to keep 32 teams if there was rebalance and getting some of UEFA seats

And the 3-team groups planned for 2026 opens the possibility for teams in the final game to know exactly what they need to do to advance - precisely the reason simultaneous last games were introduced after the Disgrace of Gijon (West Germany-Austria eliminating Algeria) in 1982.

So excited for new format. Terrible take.

The issue is easily solved 12 groups = top 2 go through, plus the final 8 places in the next round are allotted to whichever country gives the biggest bung, even if they didn’t qualify for the tournament or play in the first round…..

8 groups of 6 best option. 5 group stage games. 3 is too few for such an event. Top 2 from each group advance

More total bollocks from the 🤡🤡🤡🤡@FIFA.

Hey this is an amazing perfect 32 team format thats worked well for years. Lets change it to a complete mess that noone wants. And lets do the same to the Champions League as well!

You are the biggest moan and drama queen ever 😴 💤

O problema aqui é que FIFA quer fazer um torneio com 48 equipes na menor quantidade de tempo e de partidas possíveis, por conta do calendário, TV, patrocinadores, etc. daí a infeliz necessidade de 3 times por grupo.

Yeah, last year's 24-team Euros sucked!!! No drama at all!!! Oh, wait....

Dette ⬇️ Årets VM blir det siste med interessant og spennende gruppespill.

Now talks on 12 groups of 4. So does that mean we'd be doing the same as the Euros

Perfect number of teams now (distribution of continents should be discussed: why not intercontinental play offs??)

Could easily have more countries in some form of 10 day knockout/group stage prior to the main groups. More countries get to play at a World Cup. Winners would go into the groups and the tournament layout would remain the same. 8 winners go onto being 4th team in the groups
