It's great to intro the first @motherjones video by @garrison_hayes--who breaks down the battle for the soul happening in Georgia right now, between far-right Christian Nationalism and a tradition focused on civil rights. Check it out:

Republicans want SCOTUS to reinstate extreme gerrymander in NC giving GOP 71-78% of House seats in state where Trump got 49.9% of vote & give state legislatures king-like powers to pass new gerrymanders & voter suppression laws. A breathtaking power grab motherjones.com/politics/2022/…
Replying to @AriBerman
Key proponent of fringe & radical "independent state legislature theory" before SCOTUS is Leonard Leo-backed Honest Elections Project After stacking courts with extreme judges they now want to use courts to engineer GOP dominance of state & national politics

Election denier Republicans have lost governor’s races in AZ, CO, IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NY, PA, WI

Truly remarkable: election denier Republicans lost Secretary of State races in every major battleground state

Tony Evers won Wisconsin governor's race by 3.5 points but Republicans will control 67% seats in state senate & 64% seats in state assembly. That's what extreme gerrymandering looks like
Replying to @AriBerman
Tony Evers won WI gov race by 90k votes but Rs won near supermajority in legislature because of rigged maps Contrast that with MI, where fair maps drawn by citizens commission & Dems won back both chambers to hold trifecta for first time since 1984 motherjones.com/politics/2022/…
A democratic crisis was averted. But gerrymandering could still save the GOP.

Huge crisis for democracy averted last night as GOP election deniers defeated in key battlegrounds, but don’t forget how extreme gerrymandering could still give GOP majority in House & continues to undermine fair representation in states like Wisconsin motherjones.com/politics/2022/…
Replying to @AriBerman
GOP picked up 6 open seats in districts they gerrymandered in FL, GA, TN & TX & SCOTUS decisions reinstating racially gerrymandered maps in AL & LA cost Dems another 2 seats. That could be the difference in House control

The pundits who said voters didn’t care about democracy dying or their rights being taken away were absolutely wrong

Breaking: Republican Tim Michels concedes Wisconsin governor's race to Democrat Tony Evers. Evers has been last line of defense for democracy in Wisconsin against ultra-gerrymandered GOP legislature & gov in charge of certifying presidential election results

Breaking: Michigan voters pass ballot initiative to require at least 9 days of early voting, protect ballot drop boxes/vote by mail & prevent partisan actors from overturning election results. Huge victory for voting rights

A big reason why Kemp won: so many in media hailed him as hero for doing his job & certifying 2020 election while overlooking his long history of making it harder to vote motherjones.com/politics/2022/…
Brian Kemp is a different kind of threat to democracy

Republicans intentionally slowing down the count in Milwaukee with frivolous complaints & then they will spread conspiracy theories when votes come in late. The playbook is clear

Milwaukee is about half way through exporting results from tabulators, but Republicans keep challenging process pic.twitter.com/Xk6SEu1fxc

Wes Moore in MD becomes only the 3rd Black governor elected in US history. Don't underplay the significance of that

Take a moment tonight to thank the hundreds of thousands of election officials & poll workers working overtime in very difficult conditions to ensure a smooth election & fighting to defend democracy amid unprecedented threats

Brian Kemp has been an essential figure in Georgia's voter suppression laws. So how did that get lost in his rematch against Stacey Abrams?

@AriBerman goes in on Kemp's notorious record of subverting democracy—and the false impression he's moderate now. bit.ly/3hcW3cM

Brian Kemp has been a singular force in Georgia's voter suppression legacy. So how the hell is he being praised as some kind of democracy-defending hero in his rematch against Stacey Abrams? @AriBerman went to Georgia to find out: bit.ly/3hcW3cM

When Stephanie Friedman, a naturalized US citizen in Georgia, went to cast her ballot during early voting she was told her eligibility had been challenged

65,000 GA voters have had eligibility challenged this election b/c of new voter suppression law

It’s crazy how Brian Kemp hailed as hero for certifying 2020 election while getting little scrutiny for his long history of making it harder to vote

“when you deny election access you are just as guilty of undermining democracy" says @staceyabrams

"Wisconsin is a case study for how democracy is being eroded in real time and how democratic rights can be taken away. They want to go a lot further in terms of subverting democracy, but they've already done a lot to this day" - @AriBerman w/ @NicolleDWallace

Wisconsin GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim Michels says the quiet part out loud: “Republicans will never lose another election in Wisconsin after I’m elected governor"

GOP's plan is to make the state voter-proof so that Trump's next coup succeeds motherjones.com/politics/2022/…

Obama cites chilling stat from my new article on impact of extreme gerrymandering in Wisconsin: "Democrats have to win statewide vote by 12 points just to get to 50 seats in the assembly, while Republicans could garner a majority with just 44% of votes" motherjones.com/politics/2022/…

Despite the state's long progressive history, the GOP has been able to take control of the state Legislature due to extreme gerrymandering.

Wisconsin has become GOP’s laboratory for subverting democracy

Started with Scott Walker & extreme gerrymandering

Accelerated with lame-duck coup stripping Tony Evers of power

Now Big Lie Republicans trying to overthrow free & fair elections

Wisconsin Republicans are within grasp of making their control of state politics voter-proof. If they prevail in November, Trump’s failed 2020 coup could succeed in 2024 bit.ly/3zdiuEu' rel='nofollow noreferrer'>bit.ly/3zdiuEu bit.ly/3zdiuEu' rel='nofollow noreferrer'>bit.ly/3zdiuEu

Wisconsin Republicans have a plan to make sure Trump’s next coup succeeds. And it starts with the ultra-gerrymandered GOP legislature taking over the state’s voting system.

Early voting begins in Wisconsin today & stakes are huge: Dems won 11 of last 12 statewide elections but GOP close to getting two-thirds supermajority in legislature b/c of gerrymandering, giving them enormous power to subvert democracy & fair elections motherjones.com/politics/2022/…

First SCOTUS conservative majority gutted heart of Voting Rights Act

Then it made it much harder to strike down discriminatory voting laws

Now it wants to supercharge racial gerrymandering to dilute minority voting power

Never forget that Mitch McConnell killed filibuster to confirm 3 Trump justices to take away voting rights but Manchin & Sinema refused to reform filibuster to protect voting rights

The same Court that twice gutted Voting Rights Act & upheld extreme partisan gerrymandering now giving green light to extreme racial gerrymandering. Black voters make up 27% of AL electorate but hold just 1 of 7 Congressional districts (14%) under GOP plan reinstated by SCOTUS
BREAKING: By a 5–4 vote, with Roberts joining the liberals in dissent, the Supreme Court halts a lower court order that required Alabama to redraw its congressional map, which diluted Black votes in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

Thank you @AriBerman and @RyanLittleE.
It’s very important to keep underlining all the evidence that today’s voter suppression may be more subtle on the surface than the old Jim Crow but still highly effective in cutting key groups out of the electorate.
