Britain has become a middling island nation isolated off the coast of Europe, without the heft to matter on its own or to set the agenda in its partnerships.

There is a remedy. It would, of course, require that Britain return to the European Union.

My take:

US-China competition and potential confrontation worries many countries, particularly those who "don't want to choose."

Sri Lanka bondholders sent a letter to the #IMF saying it's ready for debt talks with the country.

A surprising move because their financing assurances are not needed for the program, but some interesting bits in the statement: 🧵

Two answers 1) empirically it's been proved - see @FofackHippolyte "In 2015, researchers found that African sovereigns were paying an interest premium on their external borrowing of around 2.9%, or an extra $2.2 billion between 2006-2014." project-syndicate.org/commentary/cre…

[...] Why a debt level at 40% is high for poor countries when rich countries can continue to borrow at 136% of GDP.

Poor countries borrow with high interest rates while rich countries borrow cheaply.

This is what folks mean when they tell you poverty is systemic.

cost of borrowing is more matter of tax revenues ie. weak state capacity and the writ of the state. Dig into what explains borrowing cost in this piece:

You cannot throw money at the poor, David. We need to change the structures that create poverty. This is something the aid industry has never understood. Poverty is system failure. Colonisation made it worse. Actually, colonialists created poverty. Neoliberalism entrenched it.
Replying to @RasnaWarah
I agree 100%. What we are looking at are mechanisms to reduce the unfair risk premium that countries face when they borrow money for things like transport, power, and trade infrastucture. I think that’s structural but would love your (and others) take on it.
