The CFB calendar needs some tweaks, or an extreme makeover. From bowl games to open, to recruiting/transfer portal adjustments, to an expanded playoff, we reimagined the calendar. Reporting from @ADavidHaleJoint, @CFBHeather, @TomVH, @ESPN_BillC and me.

Happy for all my San Diego Padre fan friends. Nothing better than when your team goes all in.

Cloak and dagger realignment: The Big Ten adding USC and UCLA broke and was finalized the same day. The SEC adding Texas and Oklahoma was kept quiet until it was essentially done.

How college football realignment deals stay secret — and should they be? theathletic.com/3468035/2022/0…

Really well done, Seth.

We looked at 11 people impacting 10 key areas around college football, from realignment to recruiting to mental health to player unionization. I enjoyed writing about @MJTaylorCo/@agdiago (analytics) and @DeionSanders (recruiting).

Where is college football headed? ESPN surveyed more than 200 coaches, players and administrators on governance, NIL, the transfer portal, recruiting, bowls/CFP and more.

Great work by @ADavidHaleJoint to lead this project. Glad I could contribute.

Was a school in the Big 12 before the expansion.

Good reporting here on what happened last summer. Talked to a source Friday at one of the Big 12 expansion targets who said, "We were five minutes away from joining the Pac-12. It was done."

Wild how things change.
Last July, the Pac-12 was considering options for potential expansion over a Zoom when USC’s president spoke up against the idea.

A year later, USC is leaving the Pac-12, and hurt feelings about how that process was handled remain (w/@BradyMcCollough): latimes.com/sports/story/2…

News from LA: Pac-12’s Kliavkoff suggests Playoff could expand before end of current contract. “It actually wouldn’t surprise me once we agree on the format, if it happens before the end of the current term,” he tells @espn. Story w/⁦@CFBHeather⁩. espn.com/college-footba…

Great piece from Harry on Doug Belk, one of the top young coordinators in CFB. He was one of the first names I included on my 45 under 45 list of minority coaches to watch, but will appear on all sorts of watch lists after a big year at #Houston.

Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir says the school has had no conversations with the Big Ten about joining the league. "We have not had any formal overture from another conference."

George Kliavkoff says his "shopping" comment was trying "to defend grenades being lobbed from every corner of the Big 12 trying to destabilize the Pac-12." Admits it wasn't the most collegial comment.

He's pissed off.

George Kliavkoff on commissioner relationships: "Up until very, very recently, I thought the discussions were very collegial. In the last month, that has changed, unfortunately." Hopes the collegiality can be re-established.

"It's unfortunate if we go the other direction."

BOOM!
On the Big 12 being 'open for business', Klivakoff says, "I appreciate that. We haven't decided if we're going shopping there yet or not."

This echoes what George said in May. He was rooting for the B1G to do a major media deal. He believes live rights are severely undervalued. Problem is, B1G's deal will include USC and UCLA.

George's ability to still maximize rights for Pac-12 will be tested.
Kliavkoff: "We are in the enviable position of being next to market after the Big Ten. We have significant interest from partners."

George Kliavkoff notes that Pac-12's media rights negotiations will move ahead after the Big Ten's deal is finished.

The Big Ten's deal is the key marker here. After it's done, expect a flurry of activity with potential realignment and TV negotiations.

That's an odd interpretation. Story isn't really about the playoff at all.

New for ESPN+: Kevin Warren's confidence never wavered despite criticism. The reason the B1G hired him -- his NFL business background -- is showing.

My favorite quote today came from Paul Chryst:

Visited w/ Sean Clifford, who is extremely confident about the offense improving this season. Also very open about what he's been through at PSU.

#Buckeyes C.J. Stroud: "At the end of the day, I want to be a legend at this school. I want to be one of the quarterbacks to ever play here, and I don't think I'm even close."

Interesting comments from #Hawkeyes Kirk Ferentz and #Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald in this @ClowESPN story about the state of college athletics

"We need some intervention, and then my bigger concern is: Who's going to do it, right?"

Thought this quote from Kevin Warren to me reflected the bolder approach he’s taking on many items, including how realignment impacts other leagues.

B1G commissioner Kevin Warren told me this is Year 2 of a 3-5 year period of disruption in college athletics.

"I say disruption from a positive standpoint, because disruption then creates opportunity, and it will then set the market as far as where people are situated."

Talked to Kevin Warren about growing interest in 16-team CFP model, as @PeteThamel reported today.

Warren: "It's heavy on my radar. Someone had raised it to me probably about six months ago, and then over the last couple weeks, it's been raised a lot."

espn.com/college-footba…

#Gophers P.J. Fleck, who studies leadership/organizations, spent part of the offseason visiting Chick-fil-A HQ.

"We not going to say we have similar cultures, but we both believe in culture. We both believe in people. And we both believe the people make the product even better."

News story on #B1G commissioner Kevin Warren keeping an open mind to future expansion, as major media rights deal close to being finalized.

"It is important for all of us in business to recognize that we're in a time of change."
