Trump said so many crazy things to Jonathan Swan, hardly anybody noticed he said the 1964 Civil Rights Act didn't work out well nymag.com/intelligencer/…

School shootings don't mobilize people to register to vote. School shootings don't increase local turnout in elections. And school shootings don't change election outcomes (either moving towards one party or another or in an anti-incumbent backlash).

My work with @JohnHolbein1 and Matthew Baldwin is out today at @apsrjournal.

In it, we explore the effects of school shootings on electoral mobilization and election outcomes.

We find no effects. Nothing.

"Contrary to a common misconception, the shape of the mushroom cloud does not depend on the nuclear or thermonuclear component; as you note, a massive detonation of chemical explosives would produce the same effect." scientificamerican.com/article/what-a…

Getting evicted is one of the most searing life experiences. It happened to my family once and it was the most destabilizing event in a childhood filled with instability. This will wreck people. apnews.com/833d91877e2f0f…

This is just clearly wrong. Mushroom clouds form in all explosions — they just stick around a lot longer for big ones. You can tell from the color of the explosion (deep red/orange) that it is not hot enough to be nuclear (which always starts white/yellow, even small nukes).

This thread on Florida, summed up: Florida Republicans have created a poll tax but are not telling people if they’ve already paid it or how much they owe. And you better not get it wrong!

Gautam Mukunda Retweeted ·
This isn't that complicated, people. There is a fire and a secondary explosion. There are literally none of the phenomena one sees with a nuclear explosion.

TRUMP: "When I took over, we didn't even have a test."

SWAN: "Why would you have a test? The virus didn't exist."

Gautam Mukunda Retweeted ·
Yeah, so you're extremely wrong and would be wise to delete this tweet and all subsequent ones. Then go into a corner and think long and hard about what you're doing.

The Republican Party has won the popular vote in one Presidential election since 1992. Absent a massive change in what they stand for, the GOP have no shot at majority support. So, they will fight like hell to preserve minority rule. thedailybeast.com/if-democrats-t…

There has never been a better example of how Trump does not use data to inform decision-making but to simply to spin existing beliefs. The numbers are merely tools to assert he’s right.

Vaccines exist for many viruses. But only one (smallpox) has ever been eradicated. It took 15 years of obsessive global coordination.

“We will probably be living with this virus for the rest of our lives.”

No other politician in my lifetime would get away with bullshit like "many people are saying" or "everyone knows" without being pressed on the source. What's astonishing is that the Swan and Wallace interviews are not the norm.

I look forward to the White House briefing where linguistic experts are rolled out to explain how, for generations, we've all been pronouncing "Yosemite" wrong.

The answers in this entire interview jockey with each other to see which can be more illuminating. @jonathanvswan poise, preparation and simplicity are a model and give voters a great resource.

This is obscene. It is simply not validated (and significantly invalidated by studies) for COVID, but a great many people need it for *other* conditions, and supplies are already short, due to distortions and hoarding. And shipping to Brazil to be destroyed.

How many universities asked their cleaning staff for input before making decisions about bringing students back to campus?

This is insane. I keep saying to all who will listen that this is not a matter of tinkering with police training. This is a foundational mindset. Of a war on crime that is utterly just a war on neighbors. Unless you change that mindset, nothing, nothing at all, will change.

Nothing demonstrates just how old the current party leadership is like when they talk about marijuana as if it's still 1950 and voters think legal weed is scary

This is a helpful confusion:

Generous UI does two things. Reduce incentives to work (lower labor supply) and increase consumer spending (higher labor demand).

What the Yale study and others have found is the demand effect dominates under today’s conditions.

People sometimes ask what I mean when I say the NYT normalizes Trump. This article casts his arbitrary, undisciplined, whimsical, often tyrannical, narcissistic and censoring approach to American corporations as him being CEO of the USA. nytimes.com/2020/08/03/bus…

I attended the briefing today by @ODNIgov regarding foreign-based election interference.

I remain very concerned information is being withheld from the public that could help voters distinguish legitimate political speech from foreign propaganda.

The @jonathanvswan interview - w a president who’s less charitable to John Lewis than he is to an alleged child sex trafficker - should snuff out ye ole “it’s the tweets” line.

The part of the axios interview where trump accuses South Korea of hiding deaths is so insane. Watching him realize he’s over his skis, and then deciding to go with it, in real time is nuts.

Oy.

Alas this "new seriousness" doesn't seem to be capable of seeing that it's really hard to run an election in a pandemic, and that therefore the feds need to send $$$$ to the states to prevent these "possible dangers." Which we'e been screaming about for months.

They gave him big, brightly colored kindergarten charts to pretend the deaths away. His aides know he is a corrupt buffoon who is killing people. But they like working at the White House. And he’s afraid of prison. So many thousands more must die.

Lots of fun stuff in this @RyanLizza story but I'm stuck on Gingrich's revelation that Trump should "adopt Nixon's strategy from 1972." You know - embracing China, counting on Ds to nominate far-left candidate, doing crimes that bring down your presidency politico.com/news/2020/08/0…

He just doesn’t have a clue. It’s absolutely humiliating.

Also, consider how scandalous it is that the US media are so rarely in a position to directly challenge the President, and when they are they hardly ever take the opportunity as clearly and persistently as we see here.

Biden was involved in a single one-on-one debate during the primary... By the polls, he won that debate... He debated many times overall. And while some of those debates were reviewed poorly by voters, they apparently weren't so poor as to deny him the nomination.

This just makes me think sadly of Mitt Romney as governor of Massachusetts, after a ceiling panel in the Ted Williams Tunnel fell and killed a person, standing at a white board drawing diagrams of how the bolts are supposed to work, why they failed, and how they would be fixed.

Watching this @jonathanvswan interview with Trump. Swan is not a TV host, but this is hands down the best TV interview of Trump during his presidency. It’s not even close. Swan displays a masterful grasp of the facts & how be confronts Trump with them is remarkable to watch.
