I adore Kolko. I always tell my fiancée I’m so proud of him whenever he’s on lol. I feel like I’ve grown up with him, honestly 😂
Well that’s incredibly kind from both of you. Thanks!

Thank you to the Nationals organization for the opportunity to realize a childhood dream. I am forever grateful to my teammates and coaches, as well as the player development and training staffs.

The best to ever do it. A phenomenal broadcaster and a phenomenal man.

The Nats announce they’ve optioned CJ Abrams to Triple-A Rochester, so he’ll start his Nationals career there.

Mike Rizzo said Nats included Josh Bell in the Soto trade with San Diego because they targeted 18-year-old RHP Jarlin Susana as a guy they really wanted, and it took adding Bell to get him.

Mike Rizzo got emotional multiple times when discussing trading Soto. Said Nats are on another “bumpy road” right now, but this deal leaves them suited to build up again. “The prospect capital that we acquired accelerates the process. … It was the right move at the right time.”

Nats make it official. They’ve traded Juan Soto and Josh Bell to the Padres for six players:

SS C.J. Abrams
LHP MacKenzie Gore
OF Robert Hassell III
OF James Wood
RHP Jarlin Susana
1B Luke Voit

Quiet day, huh? Really not much going on? Well since there’s nothing at all happening in the baseball world, you can give the latest Nats Insider Podcast a listen, featuring chats with Luis Garcia and De Jon Watson.

The Nats have made their first trade ahead of the deadline, sending Ehire Adrianza back to the Braves for minor league OF Trey Harris. Harris, 26, has spent this season at AA.

You can’t predict ball.

On this bazillion-degree summer Monday, I'm sure what's foremost on your mind is, "I wonder when that Svrluga guy's next column is going to publish."

Well, you're in luck! You can now get an email every time I drop something new. Follow the link below.

Congrats, my man. Said it to you many times before, but I’ll say it again - you’ll have a place in Nationals history forever. All the best in the next chapter!!

Juan Soto sure does love the big stage, folks.

Some sights and (very, very few) sounds from inside the Nationals’ war room as they quietly waited to make Elijah Green their top pick in the 2022 Draft. The Nats were thrilled when Green was there for them at No. 5 overall.
After countless days of scouting, research and preparation…

Elijah Green was our guy.

@granthpaulsen @funnydanny @Russellmania621 @masnKolko Who are the "young" relief pitchers that Sean Doolittle helps with advice ??? Carl Edward Jr. 30, Steve Cisheek 36, Paolo Espino 35, Kyle Finnegan 30, Erasmo Ramirez 32, Hunter Harvey 27, Jordan Weems 29 ???
Replying to @EddieKReid1 @granthpaulsen and 2 others
Look up number of career appearances for Harvey, Weems, Mason Thompson, Evan Lee. They’re young in terms of experience.

Sean Doolittle will have surgery to repair the UCL in his elbow. It’s not Tommy John. It will, however, end his season. He’ll be ready for 2023 spring training and intends to keep playing.

“I’m not going out like this.”

Hey @masnKolko - can we be a little nosey and ask what ball that is?

(We do love the frame photo of you and Jayson btw!!) pic.twitter.com/c4UAa7RGIw
Replying to @LONTDC1
That ball is from Max’s 20-strikeout game. Also snagged baseballs from all the three no-hitters I’ve covered (Jordan, and Max x2). As for the Jayson KMA photo…I think you might have an idea what he wrote on the photo when he signed it

.@masnKolko Brash opened the season with Seattle.

Yea three stints. But this his first year in the bigs. That’s what I was trying to say, at least

Nats have placed Tanner Rainey on the 60-day IL with a right UCL sprain. Brutal news for the Nats and their closer.

The corresponding move: Tyler Clippard comes up from AAA. Clip is back with the Nats for the first time since 2014.

Adorable moment. Davey just brought Anibal Sanchez’s son onto his lap to break the news that Anibal is coming off the IL to make his season debut on Thursday.

Juan Soto set the record for longest Home Run Derby homer last year at 520 feet.

His goal in this year’s Home Run Derby: Hit the longest opposite-field homer. Says anyone can homer to the pull side. Wants to set the record oppo.

Bittersweet day as I watch my last game as a Washington National. This organization was just the best. So thankful for the people that took a chance on me. @KyleBrostowitz thank you for everything you taught me. DC media it was a pleasure working with you! pic.twitter.com/nMuaKbuay8

Not sure about this, it’s been 2 games. He probably wants to leave I would
Replying to @Nats_Anthony95
His last 7+ games: 9-for-19 (.474), 3 HR, 7 BB, OPS over 1.500

Juan Soto is back, boys and girls.

Juan Soto is wearing a necklace during the game…that’s of him shuffling.

Dusty Baker is proud that his son Darren was picked to play in the Futures Game. Darren is an outfielder/second baseman for the Class A Wilmington in the Nationals organization.

A 2020 draft pick and a 2021 draft pick heading to the Futures Game together. Very cool for Cade and Darren.
Darren Baker and Cade Cavalli have been selected to participate in the 2022 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game!

Josiah Gray was nasty last night, posting a career-high 11 Ks. On TV, his slider & curveball look similar. They don’t have a huge difference in shape or velo.

But learn how Josiah’s feel and intent of those pitches differs as he takes us Behind the Seams

There’s a quick snippet of this segment on @Nationals…but if you want to nerd out and watch upwards of 10 mins of @JGrayy_ and I talking pitch grips, this is the link for you. Was really cool picking Josiah’s brain for this piece.

Quarantine Thoughts & Observations, Part II: Someone needs to create dog headphones or some device that can muffle the sound of fireworks and keep dogs from freaking out on July 4th. Fun holiday for us, a nightmare for them. Get to work, world. And you’re welcome.

Quarantine Thoughts & Observations, Part III: I would be so freaking bored if Covid hit in, say, 1990 and I had to quarantine back then. I mean, I’m bored now. But without streaming TV/movies/the internet/Golf Channel/FaceTime??? Oooof your boy would be in rough shape.

Quarantine Thoughts & Observations, Part I:

“New Girl” is a much better show than it gets credit for. And Winston makes the most dramatic improvement of any character in TV history, going from practically irrelevant in Seasons 1 & 2 to the funniest character in Season 3 & beyond

Nats announce that both Mike Rizzo and Davey Martinez have had their contract options picked up for 2023. They’ve been together since Davey joined the Nats in 2018, won a title together in 2019, and now will continue the rebuild together.

Hi all. A quick update - I learned a few hours ago that I tested positive for Covid. I feel totally fine and am eager to get back to work once cleared, but I appreciate the Nationals and MASN following all protocols to keep everyone safe. Will be back with you all soon enough.

Josh Bell’s ability to still punish the baseball while not getting off his “A swing” is truly impressive. So many times this year he’s been off balance or fired off a half swing and still hit a rope. A big, strong man with very long arms…and a professional hitter.

In reply to @masnKolko
I just don't like how much nonsense we tolerate in society anymore so I'm on alert with ovations after things that shouldn't be 'celebrated.' Not anti brawls in MLB or standing up for teammates. Just felt weird the guy flipping off thousands of fans yesterday got that treatment.
Replying to @granthpaulsen
Yea we could’ve done without that part. But he also was flipping off the rival team’s fans, hence his team’s fans loving him even more. Haha

In reply to @Nationals
Can we acknowledge @scorebook_bob @KevinFrandsen and @masnKolko (and everyone else involved) for the amazing job they are doing this season? It’s easy to remain upbeat in the top rate seasons, but they’ve done an amazing job so far. Means a ton to the fans, thank you!
Replying to @StevenYalowitz @Nationals and 2 others
Thanks, Steve! Appreciate it, man

This weird to anybody else? Ignite a two-team brawl that leads to 12 suspensions and get a standing ovation! Not as weird as Will Smith getting one an hour after slapping Chris Rock but still weird to me. pic.twitter.com/SPrenCjva3
Replying to @granthpaulsen
Eh, it’s not apples-to-apples, but Nats fans (and even many baseball fans at large) loved how Harper stood up for himself and went and got Strickland. It’s the whole defending yourself/your teammates thing. Plus, we all love galvanizing moments that brings our team together.

Erick Fedde just attacked Oneil Cruz inside with his cutter. Interested in learning more about that pitch?

Because of Covid, Davey never got to manage the All-Star team the year after the Nats won the WS, as is the custom. So because of that, Brian Snitker recently asked Davey if he’d like to join his staff for the All-Star Game this year. Very nice gesture.
Davey Martinez has been selected to be on the 2022 NL All-Star staff.

Congrats, Davey!
