No conference has such a stark split among its haves & have-nots than the SEC.

So of course the league is deadlocked on a new scheduling model. They’ve narrowed 30+ formats to two: 8 game (1 permanent + 7 rotating) & 9 game (3 + 6).

.@SInow took a jab of the 3 permanents for each team using (1) traditional primary/secondary matchups and (2) an equitable philosophy the league has used in the past where top half teams play more top half & bottom play more bottom half. bit.ly/3PIp8JU

November’s mid-term elections loom large for federal NIL legislation. Many within college sports privately say the quickest path to an NIL bill is Republicans retaking the Senate. “It’s more difficult to get a Democratic agenda thru,” says Tom McMillen. bit.ly/3Nu0J8H

Bob Bowlsby calls NCAA’s guidance a “feckless act” that can’t be enforced. An NIL insider says it is “a whole bunch of nothing.” Says one AD on enforcing NIL deals: “It might look & smell like an inducement, but it’s tough to prove it’s an inducement.” bit.ly/3Nu0J8H

Nick Saban on @SIRIUSXM radio: “Collectives are the issue. … If alumni give money or money is raised thru a collective to be used to give to players, that’s no different than the alumni giving a player money. Alumni is a representative of the school and can’t do that.”

A lot was made of this bill. Few thought it had a realistic chance of passing.
A bill in California Senate that would have required schools in state to share revenue with college athletes is going to fail to pass Appropriations Committee, according to staff for bill's sponsor, Steven Bradford. Appropriations approval would have moved bill to Senate floor.

A reminder of what Jimbo Fisher said in February in response to comments from Lane Kiffin on A&M's recruiting 👇
Jimbo Fisher today on accusations about A&M’s NIL-recruiting: “To have coaches in our league say it, clown acts. Irresponsible as hell. The guys griping about NIL and transfer portal are using it the most. That’s the ironic part. It does piss me off.”

Get your popcorn ready
A&M just informed members of the media that Jimbo Fisher will be available to take questions at 10 this morning.

As Stewart notes, there are antitrust issues with limiting a college athlete’s ability to freely transfer, especially when it’s done to prevent athletes from making money.

The transfer rule was just changed to address the antitrust concerns. It’s not going to be changed back.
