As an aside, just because the PS4 is selling faster than the PS2 now does not mean it will outsell it in the long run. The disastrous PS3 launch and a $99 PS2 meant the console sold extremely well post 2007. PS4 transition to PS5 will likely be much quicker.

Yes. The PS4 may not top 150m+ unit sales But the key difference this gen is network sales / digital Digital games + recurring revenue via subs / add on content sold through PSN. Higher margin, higher profit, less cyclical See PS4 era vs PS3 / 2 / 1 twitter.com/CrashScreen/st…

So in a sense, the PS4 is proving to be their most successful hardware yet but we might not see any manufacturer top the PS2's lifetime sales due to its (hopefully) rare circumstance?

Worlds will return to China in 2021 for the usual multi city tour with North America hosting Worlds in 2022. Bilibili announced today that it has acquired the rights to become the exclusive broadcaster of Worlds in China for the next three years. Deal rumored to cost over $100m.

Is this counting all variations like the switch lite and the ps4 pro?

In reply to @ZhugeEX
It's worth noting that Switch numbers are not updated for the past quarter as those numbers have not yet been released. But based on last quarter the Switch is selling in line with PlayStation 4. Also note that PS2 are production shipments, so slightly inflated vs others.

The PlayStation 4 has now sold in 112.1m units after 80 months on the market.

This puts it slightly ahead of the PS2 when launch aligned.

The Wii had reached 100m units at this point, but sales had already flatlined.

The PS1 had sold nearly 88m units.

It's slightly different because PlayStation Mobile still falls under PlayStation. But this mobile gaming segment falls under Sony Music.

For those unaware, Sony has a subsidiary under Sony Music called Aniplex. They are the publishers of Fate/Grand Order which is one of the most popular mobile games in Japan. This revenue is what Sony earns from the game, not total gross revenue.

Going forward, Sony plans to explore future growth through pan entertainment digital contents. This follows its investment in digital entertainment companies such as Epic Games and Bilibili The company will now report additional segments related to this, such as mobile gaming.

One interesting point is that Sony now breaks out mobile game revenue separately from its gaming segment.

In FY20 Q1 (Apr 1 - 30 Jun) net sales for mobile games was $241 million, nearly all of which will be from in app purchases within Fate/Grand Order. pic.twitter.com/qfCMbZ74de

This was the best quarter ever in terms of overall network sales too, boosted by increased game sales, add on content sales and subscriptions across the board. 74% of full game sales in the quarter were digital too, up from 53% last year. No wonder there is a digital PS5. pic.twitter.com/kNpNkQizdK

Thanks Chris, appreciate the response & insight, but that doesn’t answer how Sony managed to get their streaming app on iOS and the others haven’t? I suppose they may have got it on before Apple decided gaming could be good for them & hence, had different hoops to jump thru?
I think the difference here is remote play streaming vs cloud game streaming. No purchase or subscriptions involved in the first case.

Strong quarter for PlayStation (end June 30)

The PlayStstion 4 has now sold 112.3 million units to date.

The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima selling well.

PS Plus paid subscriptions have now reached 45 million. pic.twitter.com/Zb4J8OpfWM

Issuing a small correction the above. Sony revised its sell in figures for the past two quarters and so the actual total for PlayStation 4 hardware is 112.1 million units and not 112.3m Apologies for the oversight.

The big missing feature, and not just for xCloud but Stadia too, is no iOS support

Apple has more than 1 billion active devices worldwide and playing games off console on iPhone or iPad would be a huge selling point for those not on Android

Hope this is something resolved soon

Xbox will be at the Samsung Unpacked event to announce a partnership, likely perks for Samsung devices / additional device support. This is one of the next steps for the service, expanding to more devices and platforms including smart tv's, as I mentioned in the thread above.

This is the start of Microsoft's long term strategy to reach a much broader gaming audience.

Right now it's a great addition for existing game pass subscribers who will extend gameplay beyond console.

In the future it will be a full entry point into the Xbox ecosystem.

For just $15 per month.

Games must be approved by the regulator (NPPA) before they can be distributed in China. This policy has been in place since 2016, with Android stores fully compliant. Apple said in February 2020 that it would begin to comply, removing unlicensed games from July 1.
