Candidates campaigning for 2020 should have in mind not just a plan for how to undo harms of the present administration but how to make sure that the government they hand over in 4-8 years is not conducive to, say, a Cotton administration *immediately* launching a war with Iran.

One lesson from the past decade is that it is likely not enough to simply be better stewards of the machinery of war; anything left in place by even the most thoughtful of technocrats will eventually be handed off to someone with far less care for mitigating harm.

My biological dad was a drug addict and physically abusive to my mother. 12 years ago, my stepdad brought the light into our world again. He’s always loved me and my sister as his own. And so we decided to change our last name this Father’s Day. I love you Dad. 💛

I just don’t read his stuff. It’s too illogical. I’m sure he says good things, sometimes. But, I don’t even pay attention, after suffering a book study of his, over a decade ago. It’s not worth my time. We’ve got ppl to love, IJN.

I knew I had forever lost the ability to talk to a childhood friend about faith when he told me God willed the gang rape of a five year old girl I met in Congo. Nope. That’s a lie. An evil, evil lie. Just because men say it wuth conviction doesn’t make it true.

These views come out of a desperation to explain why a good God allows human suffering. I choose to be comfortable with ambiguity, with not being able to explain the why, rather than defending an indefensible answer.

2. God does not will human suffering to sanctify us. This is an insidious lie from the pit of hell some Calvinists insist upon. God does not will the death of a child, cancer, earthquakes, or war to make a better person. God is with us in crisis, but does not will those crises.

Nonsense like this is making me really miss @rachelheldevans this morning. Two things:
1. Empathy - entering into suffering with those who suffer - is literally a Biblical command. “Rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn.” Romans 12:15 desiringgod.org/articles/the-e…

Don’t really want to give the clicks but it’s totally fascinating! Maybe the Wormwood trope is so popular so writers like this can really dive into their impulses to reject the reality of human suffering which confronts ideologies?
