So to summarise, Rishi Sunak, who promised a new era of "accountability and integrity"

- Won't sack Nadhim Zahawi who had to pay a penalty for failing to pay his taxes
- Won't reveal what Zahawi told him about the penalty
- Won't say if he has also ever had to pay a penalty

🔴 NEW for @BylineTimes 🔴

Nadhim Zahawi's Tory leadership bid was funded by an investment manager listed in the Paradise Papers and linked to Bermuda, the offshore tax haven.

This is a much more carefully-worded denial than that given by No.10 yesterday.
This exchange between Sky @KamaliMelbourne and minister Chris Philp feels significant

Philp sent out with careful phrases - PM "understood no outstanding tax issues at the time" of appointment.

And didn't know of "discussions"

One major legacy of Boris Johnson's premiership is that 'styling out' a scandal, no matter how egregious, in the hope that it will go away is now the default position for Tory government. The fact that Zahawi threatened to sue people for correct reporting should be career-ending.

Er, I'm not. I'm doing the opposite by pointing out that it's ridiculous for them to be labeled as getting 'something for nothing'

Wow. This is simply untrue.

Richard Sharp has ***publicly acknowledged*** that he introduced Sam Blyth to Simon Case, the nation’s top official, to discuss the loan!

He met Case in person to discuss PM’s finances.

Cab Office formally told Johnson: stop seeking Sharp’s advice.

"This is another example of the BBC disappearing up its own fundament," says Boris Johnson, of a story broken entirely by the Sunday Times.

This, from a former opposition staffer at City Hall during Boris Johnson's time there, is good on how Boris Johnson was let off the hook over many years.

So to summarise, over the past year we've had:

- A Chancellor trying to get out of paying his own taxes
- A Prime Minister who borrowed hundreds of thousands of pounds in undeclared loans
- And a BBC chairman who secretly helped him do it.

New development. Guardian reporting Zahawi paid the tax plus interest, plus a 30% penalty - over £5m.

30% is at the lower end of what I'd expect. But the obvious point: people whose taxes are "fully up to date" don't pay 30% penalties to HMRC. theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/j…
