Notice the people willing to explain this away, yet when Ilhan’s words are taken out of context, they are the 1st to jump on her. Look at how these accusations are selectively enforced on the left, esp when it’s the *alt-right* actually committing antisemitic violence in the US.

Can ⁦@politico⁩ explain to us how photoshopping money trees next to the only Jewish candidate for president and talking about how “cheap” and rich he is *isn’t* antisemitic?

Or are they just letting this happen because he’s a progressive politician they don’t like? pic.twitter.com/O9qvDBw4ib

Ever since the Bush Admin, Patriot Act, & creation of Dept. Homeland Security, the dangerous erosion of American civil liberties has worsened.

We’re melting away our Constitutional rights - all for the excuse of hating immigrants.

We’re shredding what it means to be American.⬇️
I got ambushed and interrogated by CBP today, on my way IN TO Mexico. 5 officers (waiting on the walkway just before entrance into MX) stopped me and ordered me to step in a little side cage area. I asked why I was being stopped. I was told to be quiet and turn around. (Thread)

Cash bail is wrong—period. We can’t have two systems of justice: one for the poor and one for the wealthy.

But we shouldn’t replace cash bail with another system that over-surveils black and brown communities. Folks don’t need ankle bracelets, they need meaningful support.

Wow! When Trump tweeted that spliced video of Ilhan a few weeks ago to a weak response in the House, I definitely didn’t think he’d try it again + escalate. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Whatever this lawless President does to one of us, he does to all.

Until we learn that lesson, he will keep going.
Manipulated videos of Nancy Pelosi that made it seem as if she were repeatedly stumbling and slurring her words spread across social media on Thursday. President Trump shared one of the edited videos as tensions escalated between the 2 leaders. nyti.ms/2HRhtXy

If Fox News said it, it must be true! 🤣
I love the idea of a Green New Deal but @FoxNews said the plan includes the mandatory sucking of farts out of camels, solar panel skull implants, Al Gore face tattoos for all, and prison time for Ford F-250 owners. So must be true. Suck it, @AOC!

We held the hearing. PrEP is going generic a year early. It was thanks to: - Everyday people who advocated & didn’t quit until someone listened - A young staffer who listened & dug in - Committee staff that took her seriously - Generous leadership that cultivates the next gen /5

It ALL started with everyday people. You would really be surprised how much work here gets started because a journalist picked up on a story, or advocates organized people to command notice of an issue. It’s inspiring how much power everyday people have. We just need to use it.

Chairman/woman leadership varies widely in style. For ex, Seniority matters a LOT in Congress. But Chairman Cummings is generous w/ junior members. He invests a lot of time in training a high standard of excellence on the Committee of ALL members. So he gave us a rare shot. /4

In working with our staffer, Oversight Committee was able to pull in request a great deal of docs and evidence in the case. Bc Dems won the House, Dems control committees + Chairs. It was the leadership of the Chairman @RepCummings that brought the issue to a hearing. /3

After vetting the case these organizers presented, she saw that it seemed they were. She passed it by me and our office engaged the Oversight Committee. Committee staffers are CRITICAL. They have the expertise, tenure, relationships, etc to investigate issues + inquiries. /2

Let’s talk abt how Gov works behind the scenes: Remember that Big Pharma hearing last week?

Here’s how it happened.

A 23 y/o staffer in my office met w/ local HIV advocates. They argued the CDC held the patent for PrEP & Gilead was price gouging.

She picked it up + dug in. /1

We often see when Congress doesn’t work.

But a House majority *can* get things done - even in a divided gov.

Ex 1:Journalists found that the ONLY hospital in Vieques was in shambles.

We took up the case. Now it’s getting rebuilt.S/O to Rep. @NydiaVelazquez for leading on PR.⬇️
Big news 1st reported by @DavidBegnaud: FEMA has agreed to a complete reconstruction of the only hospital in Vieques, Puerto Rico

Came days after pressure via letter from @ewarren, @KamalaHarris, @AOC demanding answers from FEMA about our story:

Yesterday, GOP moved to silence Lauren Underwood’s words bc she had the audacity to say the obvious: that stealing children away from their parents, trafficking, & caging them w/o end is intended to do harm.

They tried to silence her; make her back down.
She didn’t.
Be proud 👏🏽
For over a year, it’s been clear that policies at the border have harmed the physical and mental health of migrant children. I believe, at this point, failure to change these broken policies based on that knowledge is intentional and unacceptable.

That’s twice in two weeks that a *majority of GOP voters* have polled favorably with our policy initiatives.

We’re taking their base by fighting for their dignity.

That’s why Fox News, corp lobbyists, & conservative trolls (trinity of the right, I guess) are coming hard for us.
New from me and @WaltHickey: A new INSIDER poll found that a majority of GOP voters agree with Democratic Rep. @AOC that the federal government should do more to influence the cost of drugs for communicable diseases like HIV. businessinsider.com/gop-voters-agr…

✅ End Cash Bail
✅ Stop Prosecuting Drug Use (it’s a HEALTH issue!)

In fact, the same thing that happened with Steve Mnuchin & Sears also happened with Toys R’ Us.

Workers have had their promised severance stolen by Wall St - this vid is from Thanksgiving.

Here’s how it’s playing out w/ Toys R Us workers in the Bronx ⬇️

When companies like Toys R’ Us & Sears go down & lay off thousands, people think it’s “internet kills brick + mortar.”

That’s not the full story.

CEOs+boards load these co’s w/ debt to enrich themselves, tank them, & leave workers in the cold w/o promised severance.

No more.
My dad worked for Sears for 30+ years. Sears cut his job around 2008. They hired him back a year or so later on a job that paid less. Instead of retiring as planned, he worked until his first treatment for lung cancer (Agent Orange) that he never recovered from.

With GoT out of the way, let’s talk Sec. Steve Mnuchin’s receipts. 🧾

Mnuchin went on the Sears board as his college roommate served as CEO.

Together, they fired a *quarter million people* in a debt scheme that looks awfully self-dealing.

We want to get to the bottom of it. ⬇️
Before @StevenMnuchin1 became Treasury Secretary, he was on the board of @Sears, where he helped gut the company and fire thousands of employees. Now, @AOC and I have some tough questions for him. pic.twitter.com/hS25rPOsYa

People often ask questions about impeachment (“Are you going to impeach?“), but treat it as though it’s one, singular action.

Impeachment is a process. Some people may support pursuing some parts of that process, & not others.

Agreed. It’s possible some NYC reporters, like other NYers, are so used to NYC’s political machines that perspectives are shaped by them more than we realize.

I’m not here to replace 1 machine w/another,or unilaterally oppose all incumbents.I’m here to support people+principles.
I don't get the analysis that @AOC endorsing @CabanForQueens carries risk or is a special flex. This is the natural thing to do and would have been strange if not done.

Caban consolidated the progressive lane for a very important race in Queens. What else should AOC do?

The US imprisons more than any other country in the world.

To change that, we must elect District Attorneys that measure success in actual community safety, not # of people locked up.

That’s why I endorsed @CabanForQueens for Queens DA.

Woohoo!

@aoc groks AI bias!!!

Check the sky for flying 🐽 bc Rep. Meadows, much of the Freedom Caucus & I are in agreement on preventing total surveillance of Americans without their knowledge.

Whether it’s Amazon or Gov, no one should be tracked w/o consent or a warrant. techcrunch.com/2019/05/22/ama…

When tech companies develop algorithms that automate the assumptions of people from one demo, they start to automate subconscious bias.

When those flawed algorithms get sold to law enforcement, it can be disastrous for anyone that doesn’t look like most Silicon Valley engineers.
.@RepAOC @AOC on facial recognition: "So, we have a technology that was created and designed by one demographic that is only mostly effective on that one demographic and they're trying to sell it and impose it on the entirety of the country?" pic.twitter.com/4GHjf3Tedz

Interestingly, Ocasio-Cortez also invoked the aspect of Roe v. Wade that deals with privacy. “This doesn’t just give us a right to my uterus, my shoulders, my hands, my knees and my toes. And my face. ... In our right to privacy, this is about our right to our entire body."

Reframing by @AOC here appropriately shifts the idea that everything one does as an elected official is political and places credit where it is due. Reporters like me need more of this thinking from editors because then maybe I can do my job and report.

I endorsed @CabanForQueens for DA not out of a “power move,” but because to me it feels like the right thing to do. Electing a public defender to a DA’s position with her platform could be transformative, &the organizers busting their butts on the ground have earned recognition.
Replying to @AOC
When I ran last year, everyone and their cousin endorsed my opponent. After he lost, did people imply that the Gov’s endorsement wasn’t powerful anymore? That virtually every single union in NYC no longer had influence? No! It was about the candidates and the race. It always is.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion: I don’t believe endorsements are a particular “test of influence.”

I think it’s insulting to both the candidate and organizers working tirelessly to imply that.

Endorsements don’t determine campaigns - organizers do.

For the first time, @AOC is testing her influence in New York with an endorsement, @JeffCMays reports.

The question is: how similar are Democratic voters in the rest of Queens to those in the western, more gentrified areas that propelled her to Congress?

We are now at the point where we must begin an impeachment inquiry. I don't say that lightly. We've taken every step we can w/subpoenas and witnesses. Trump obstructs everything. A president who thinks he's king, accountable to nobody & ,above the law is absolutely unacceptable.

Who says progressives can’t get stuff done?

Thank you @SecretaryCarson for your testimony in front of the Financial Services Committee today.

We have many crises in housing, & I look forward to reversing the unjust legacy laws from the War on Drugs in our public housing system.
How about that. @aoc just got qualified support for her second bill from Trump administration Housing Secretary Ben Carson. The bill would roll back some one-strike policies that throw families out of public housing.

Just as what happens in the House doesn’t control Senate, what happens in the Senate shouldn’t control the House.

DoJ outlined ev of 10 criminal instances. Pres is now obstructing legally binding subpoenas.

We need to do our job & vote on impeachment. What Sen does is on them.
Replying to @AOC
Remember, Clinton was also impeached - that failed in Sen too. Our institutions didn’t suffer then, but they have been damaged greatly today w unwillingness to impeach. Whether it’s Dem fear or GOP recklessness, doesn’t matter. Failure to impeach now is neglect of due process.

The question some might raise--and to which I do not have a good answer--is whether or not impeaching without chance of success actually preserves rather than weakens institutions, given that a failure could actually embolden some to weaken the rule of law still further.
