To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Italian Air Force, there will be five T6 aircrafts flying over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at approximately 10:25 a.m. tomorrow.

Earlier today, military funeral honors with funeral escort were conducted for @USArmy Pfc. Francis P. Martin in Section 81. Martin was killed on January 16, 1945, while serving in France during World War II. His remains were identified over 77 years later by @dodpaa.
 
During #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor the contributions of nurses in the U.S. military. One nurse, Namahyoke “Namah” Curtis, recruited 32 Black women to serve as contract nurses during the Spanish-American War. Learn more: education.arlingtoncemetery.mil/Themes/Spanish….

Earlier today, @MissAmerica Grace Stanke placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. ANC Executive Director @KDurhamAguilera greeted Stanke and accompanied her during her visit. While at ANC, Stanke also visited the gravesites of President Kennedy and his family.
 
Happy Birthday @WestPoint_USMA! #OnThisDay in 1802, President Thomas Jefferson signed legislation creating the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. West Point graduates laid to rest at ANC include Gen. Meigs, Gen. Bradley and Gen. Walker.

Today we honor Allie G. Harshaw (Section 64). Her military career included service with the 6888 during WWII. The first Black female Air Force master sergeant to retire with 30 years of service, she received the Congressional Gold Medal for her service with the Tuskegee Airmen.

Today in 1934, John Henry Russell became the 16th commandant of the @USMC. He created doctrine on U.S. amphibious operations, which shaped how the Marine Corps fought in many conflicts, including World War II. He is laid to rest in Section 7.
 
On Feb. 28, 2022, Congress voted to award the Army’s 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion with the Congressional Gold Medal. The only all-Black, all-female Women’s Army Corps (WAC) unit to serve overseas in World War II, the 6888 included 14 known members buried at ANC.

On this day in 1991, the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division, commanded by Col. Montgomery C. Meigs, attacked Iraq’s last organized defense in the Persian Gulf War. The war ended the next day. Meigs is buried in Section 1 near his ancestor and architect of ANC, Montgomery Meigs.

First Lt. James Reese Europe, an originator of early jazz, served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He and his 369th Infantry band toured overseas and elevated African American music as an art form, sharing it with American and European audiences. He is buried in Section 2.
 
Barbara Allen Rainey (Section 6) made history on this date in 1974 when she became the first American female naval aviator. She died in a training accident on July 13, 1982.

Today we remember the U.S. Army’s 761st Tank Battalion, a Black combat unit in the segregated military during World War II. These tankers served with honor and distinction while facing discrimination. Their commander, Lt. Col. Paul Bates, is in buried in Section 60.

Numerous presidents have visited ANC to participate in ceremonies and honor the war dead. Two presidents (Taft and Kennedy) are also buried here. On President’s Day, we honor all of our nation’s presidents and look forward to more presidential visits to our sacred grounds.
 
On this day in 1945, three U.S. Marine Corps divisions assaulted the island of Iwo Jima, leading to one of the bloodiest Pacific Theater battles of World War II. Many who died on Iwo Jima are buried at ANC, including Medal of Honor recipient John Basilone.

On this day in 1949, Felix Longoria was laid to rest at ANC. Killed in action during World War II, Longoria was denied a chapel service in his hometown due to his ethnicity. The struggle to give him an honorable funeral marked a turning point for Mexican American civil rights.
 
Yesterday, a ceremony was held to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Maine. During the ceremony, @KDurhamAguilera gave remarks. @USNHistory Director @USNavy Rear Adm. (ret.) Sam Cox and @USNatArchives Chief Operating Officer William Bosanko laid a wreath.

On Valentine’s Day, we honor Capt. Finn and Edith “Jackie” Maslin Ronne, buried together at ANC. They were renowned polar explorers who became the first married couple to fly to the South Pole in 1971.
 
Fifty years ago today, Jeremiah Denton was released from a North Vietnamese prison. Shot down in 1965, he endured seven years of captivity. During a forced interview, Denton blinked T-O-R-T-U-R-E in Morse code to communicate that he and other prisoners were being tortured.
