#MikeBrown should be celebrating his 26th birthday today. Praying for his parents, Lesley McSpadden and Michael Brown Sr. “...until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

For some, a slap at the Oscars is easier to condemn and to which to reply “I don’t condone violence” than the search for and slaughter of Black people by an avowed white supremacist.

Because “I don’t condone white supremacy” is both a mirror and a magnifying glass.

Of course, I believe “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”

I also believe that much of the hate simmering across the world is fueled by racism and white supremacist ideology.

We have to drive out hate with love, yes.

We have to condemn and eradicate racism, too.

In legislation and legislators. In media. In platforms that indoctrinate to the hate-filled, power hungry ideology. In every area where racism persists and is perpetuated. So choosing love isn’t a passive choice. Love drives out hate, meets needs + dismantles injustice.

When all the national media leaves Buffalo and the photo opps are done, please continue to love this community. It's going to take a lot of time to heal.

Remembering Brother Malcolm on his 97th birthday.

Read 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X.'

History books don't tell his story.

And media and government painted the picture that they wanted us to see.

#MalcolmX

Changemaker, indeed.
Grateful to and for you, Mari (@LittleMissFlint).
Mari Copeny, who was known as 'Little Miss Flint' after writing a letter to then-President Barack Obama asking him to visit her hometown of Flint, Michigan, in 2016 when she was 8, was presented with the Changemaker Award at the Billboard Music Awards on May 15, 2022. pic.twitter.com/NFzWO5pIzm

On today, his 97th birthday, I am remembering #MalcolmX (el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz) and praying for his dear daughters.

#MalcolmXDay 🖤

As long as we push “stop hate crimes,” instead of/without “eradicate white supremacy and racism,” we aren’t dealing with the real issue.

We’ll get more of the same.

And that’s tragic.

“What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.” #MLK

Agony

And it doesn’t have to be this way.

Denounce white supremacist ideology (@GOPLeader @LeaderMcConnell)

Pass legislation to get it out of gaming, policing, etc. (@SpeakerPelosi @SenSchumer)

Educate our children on the truth about it

Pass stricter gun laws
"You expect us to keep doing this over and over again, forgive and forget," said Garnell Whitfield, a former fire commissioner who lost his mother, Ruth Whitfield, in Saturday's mass shooting in Buffalo. nyti.ms/3yKmc9l pic.twitter.com/6Ev0vaUlzq

May 17, 1954, the day the decision in Brown vs. Board of Education was issued, marks a defining moment in the history of the United States. The Supreme Court declared the doctrine of “separate but equal” unconstitutional.

Further, while hate and racism can feed off each other, racism (with its goal to make white supremacy a reality) influences every area relevant to that goal: education, healthcare, media, housing, legislation, lending, wages, banking, policing, voting, etc.
Replying to @BerniceKing
So when media and politicians can’t call racism what it is, that is, at least in part, due to how truth about racism and strategy to eradicate it will affect their power. And, for some, it’s because racism has intentionally been conflated with hate, dislike, and disagreement.

🧵 We need to rid ourselves of both, but hate and racism are not the same.

It’s easier for many to talk about hate instead of racism because dismantling racism = dismantling power and deconstructing constructs that benefit from discrimination and disparities based on race.

This. This is so devastating. To live 70+ years Black in this nation, affected by racism every day, and then be murdered in a grocery store by an 18 year-old White man overcome with rage about propaganda. Sick.
Our elders have lived way too long & have overcome way too much to be racially executed at the grocery store.

My heart is heavy & my soul is disturbed.

Kat was my FRIEND. Kat sent $10 to the Fruit Belt Community Land Trust monthly. She kept photo albums of the work we did together to preserve the neighborhood.

So irresponsible to continue this narrative (including inhumanely referring to people as “illegals”) in the wake of the massacre of ten human beings by an avowed white supremacist with a goal of terrorizing Black people. Why? Because he believes White people are being replaced.
Democrats desperately want wide open borders and mass amnesty for illegals allowing them to vote.

Like the vast majority of Americans, Republicans want to secure our borders and protect election integrity.

Please remember that seeing/hearing about a mass murder (particularly if your people group was targeted and is consistently targeted) is traumatizing for many.

Rest, support, counseling, and stepping away from news/media/social media when needed are all important.

Dear @POTUS: As you comfort a city, community, and families in mourning, please remember that racism and white supremacy are not contrary to the “American way.” Please convey the urgent need to excommunicate and eradicate these two evils with both love and legislation. #Buffalo

Church,

Speak against white supremacy with holy fire.

Eliminate the racism that ruins the story of the brown man from Nazareth.

Reject all xenophobia at the altar.

Stop playing games of fake unity and false diversity.

Flip the tables of oppression.

But so too is white supremacy. It is used to manipulate elections, to destroy public education, to deny disaster relief, to justify starving babies, to poison communities, to destroy empathy, to deny the truth, to steal land, & has the power to turn people into murderers.

Congress should be working fervently to develop a plan to address and eradicate white supremacist terrorism.

Instead, state legislators across the nation are working fervently to ban CRT.

We need a revolution of values and leaders with courage and compassion.

Almost 80 years of life…💔
Pearly Young, 77, was killed today in #Buffalo shopping for groceries.

For 25 years she ran a pantry where every Saturday she fed people in Central Park. Every. Saturday.
She loved singing, dancing, & being with family.

She was mother, grandma, & missionary. Gone too soon 🕊 pic.twitter.com/dQ5X9KBJCQ

We must do more than “thoughts and prayers.”

It is distinctly devastating to get the news that a loved one has been gunned down by someone fueled by hate, racism, and white supremacy.

It adds terrorism to an already traumatic moment.

I just want to express my love and sympathy to the families of those murdered in Buffalo.

A young white supremist killed my mother and other family members. Again, we deal with death because of hate and a gun. Thoughts and prayers won’t cut it. Something must be done! Can I count on you to help change this narrative? @MomsDemand @Everytown #BuffaloNY #Emanuel9 pic.twitter.com/Mjciq8JbjG

Racism is a traumatizing threat to the mental, physical, and economic well-being of millions and millions of people.

It’s not a difference of opinion.

It’s not an illusion of the “woke.”

It is a pervasive evil.

Let’s de-colonize our minds.

By now I would think most would understand that white supremacy will destroy this entire country - not just Black, Brown,Asian & indigenous people. It is a deadly poison to which this country is uniquely vulnerable. And we will either fight it or be destroyed as a nation by it.

I know some are expecting more commentary from me. I don’t have it today.

I’m committed to discovering more ways I can help. And sometimes talking about it depletes energy for doing something about it.

I encourage you to Be Love, take care, and engage in compassionate action.

These are tumultuous, complex times, family.

There are few simple solutions.

I do believe, if we are guided by love and yielded to a revolution of values, we can develop a course of action that includes heart, ideological, social, and policy change.

I won’t give up on us.
