You have to decide whether you hate losing so much, you’re willing to change or that you hate/fear to change so much that you’re willing to keep losing.

(This goes for coaches as well as student-athletes)

Nick Saban on being a Team Leader 🔈

“You can’t be the guy that comes in the meeting late. You can’t be the guy that’s missing class. You have to set a good example & be somebody everybody else on the team can emulate.” 🔥👏

💬 “I was a backup quarterback on a 0-8 freshman high school team, and I didn’t play. We didn’t even win a game and I couldn’t even play”

This is what humility looks like.

“I’m so proud of you for what you’ve done.”

@JohnnyBench_5 congratulating @SalvadorPerez15 for hitting 46 home runs, now the most in a season by a primary catcher, is so wholesome.

Must-read thread for every athlete/coach. I had the privilege to coach against and then later scout Mark.

Really happy to see the comeback journey. Rooting for ya man!
In 2013, I was the #1 overall pick in the MLB Draft.

5 years later, I was called “the biggest bust in MLB history.”

Today, I’m working my way back, and I’m here to share both the hard-earned lessons I’ve learned along the way🧵👇

How important is knowing the game?

So many times, it’s the difference between winning and losing.

If you're complaining you're not leading.

Leaders don't complain.They share a vision.

They inspire with optimism. They focus on solutions.

Athletes: Don't waste energy on things you can't control.

Focus on what you can control such as: getting better and making others (your teammates) around you better.

My goal for every athlete I've ever coached is that they'll know that I loved them & my hope is that when they get older they’ll realize that those of us who demanded their best, were also the ones who cared about them the most.

Sometimes success simply comes down to grinding it out.

Doing it when you don't want to.

Putting in one more hour, or one more rep! 🏆

When you're part of a team, you stand up for your teammates.

Your loyalty is to them.

You protect them through good and bad, because they'd do the same for you.

Only got to talk to Skip a couple of times in my career but his coaching tree and influence is seen everywhere you look in the game. Pretty cool stuff right here.
Cleaning out my files last night & I found this doc from Mike Gillespie when he was the Head Baseball Coach at USC. These WERE the rules & not just a bunch of words on paper. Great stuff. Enjoy!!

Kids. Remember This:

With GOOD coaches, the coach really doesn't determine your playing time.

Your own choices do.
Your effort.
Your attitude.
Your work ethic.

Not just your skill set. 🏆

Understand there is a price to be paid for achieving anything of significance.

You must be willing to pay that price.

Don't look for the big, quick improvement.
Seek the small improvement one day at time.
That's the only way it happens-and when it happens, it lasts.

A real team connects, commits, competes & cares for each other! 🏆

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what other think you are.

A coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime. - Billy Graham

Coaches: That means you need to be transformational NOT transactional. You can have a positive or negative impact. Make this season about your positive impact.

Players on the bench have two choices: Sit and do nothing. Or stay mentally engaged. You may not be physically connected to the game, but you should always be emotionally connected to it.
