What's it like to cover an election?

@NBCUAcademy takes you behind-the-scenes with
@_abigailbrooks and me to show you how we cover election night, and all that goes into preparing for the big moment:

Big deal.

American Firearms Association — which makes NRA look a knitting club — says its members have flipped from Trump to DeSantis. It doesn’t really matter whether or how a poll of members was conducted. The fact that they’re releasing this is a signal to the hard right and Trump. pic.twitter.com/dUemk1QoLm

Hot take: @Delta has the best airplane playlists. Just great jams.

And yes. I’m finally boarding a flight home! Thanks PA for a wild, special, hard, wonderful ride.

Biggest thanks to all the Pennsylvanians who shared their stories with me, making our reporting so much richer.

Oz statement on his loss:

“We are facing big problems as a country and we need everyone to put down their partisan swords and focus on getting the job done.”

#PASEN NEWS: Oz called Fetterman this morning to concede.

BREAKING🚨@NBCNews projects Fetterman wins

The crowd at HQ chanting “Every county, every vote,” the campaign’s mantra.

The strategy set out from the start in the primary to the finish line now paying off when it matters.

And remember - he did win every county in the primary.

Fetterman outperforming Biden in key counties, Oz underperforming Trump out West.

It may well come down to Philly and its suburbs where Oz has tried to make a play. He'll need to outperform there.
🚨 @NBCNews just updated the #PASEN characterization as "too early to call, but Fetterman leads."

Luzerne County Council is run by a Republican vast majority (9 Rs to 1 D)…and it’s Republican voters (and potentially candidates) that will be most impacted. Republican voters are more likely to vote in-person than Dems.
Big Election Day mess in Luzerne County, PA. Dozens of polling places ran out of printer paper for ballots. Voters had to be turned away.

Court just ruled to extend polling hours to 10pm - an unprecedented move.

Officials don't know how many voters were turned away in Luzerne County because of the paper shortage. But one tells me: "There’s going to be an impact. People who came before work and couldn’t vote - they’re not going to come back." 2/3

Some context on Luzerne County - it was a longtime Dem stronghold that went for Trump in 2016 and 2020. In this race, it's a critical place where Republicans need turnout. We saw Oz, Shapiro, and Fetterman hold events here over the last few days, underscoring its importance. 3/3

In the court order extending voting hours the judge writes: “Voters in Luzerne County through no fault of their own were disenfranchised and denied the fundamental right to vote.”

Local officials are shocked. One says: "I don't know how you could get that wrong." 1/3

- Philly election official to my colleague @MauraBarrettNBC bemoaning a last-min change that all but guarantees we won't get results by Weds.

Poll book reconciliation was reinstated this AM, which will significantly slow the count.
Replying to @DashaBurns
City commissioners voted 2-1 to reinstate this process that can catch possible double votes from being counted. Philly is the only PA county that does this. An official says this was a response to “fears of misinformation” being spread around lawsuit by a a GOP group.

#PASEN Fetterman delivers his Election Eve message at a union hall in Pittsburgh - back to his roots and early heart of his campaign with the labor platform.

He spoke for almost 20 minutes - the longest we’ve seen since his stroke - and made his case clearly, with few stumbles.

#PASEN Ballot counting hasn't yet started but the lawsuits have:

The Fetterman Campaign along with the DSCC, DCCC filed suit seeking to overturn the PA Supreme Court’s ruling that undated mail-in ballots should not be counted...arguing that it violates the Civil Rights Act.

Fetterman on Oprah Endorsement says, in part:

“It is an honor and privilege to have Oprah’s support in this race...I’m grateful for Oprah’s support and trust on the issues that matter to people across the country and Pennsylvania as we close out this campaign.”

FIRST TO @NBCNews: Oz responds to Oprah endorsement of his rival John Fetterman, telling us:

“Doctor Oz loves Oprah and respects the fact that they have different politics. He believes we need more balance and less extremism in Washington.”

For these voters it’s about the person on the ballot, not the party. And they could sway the election.
This election season, some traditional one-party voters are leaning away from certain candidates and voting for the other side.

A top concern we hear from suburban women in PA is crime. Whether or not their community is actually seeing a rise in violence, they are worried about their family’s safety. The Oz ads seem to be working. In politics, perception matters.
“That group [white suburban women] which the pollsters said makes up 20% of the electorate, shifted 26 percentage points away from Democrats since the Journal’s August poll and now favors the GOP by 15 percentage points.” wsj.com/articles/gop-p…
