Heartbroken that we have lost Sir David Amess MP. A great common sense politician and a formidable campaigner with a big heart, and tremendous generosity of spirit - including towards those he disagreed with. RIP my friend.
I am committed to delivering the prison places needed to keep offenders off the streets and cut crime.

We're consulting on a new 240-place houseblock at HMP Gartree - part of our £4bn plan for 18,000 additional places across the estate.…

Another big moment for the $100bn goal as Sweden commits to double its climate finance by 2025 🇸🇪 @bolund

We are within touching distance of the $100bn

The Census Data call centre @HMPHighDown allows prisoners to gain skills & helps them get jobs on release.

Employing ex-offenders can plug skill shortages & cut re-offending. I invite all employers to join our @NewFutrsNet summit to find out more 👇
Great to meet Buster too - one of the many talented dogs @hmphighdown whose detection abilities lead to the prosecution of those attempting to smuggle contraband and help keep the prison drug-free.
It was a pleasure to meet Jo Simms, the inspiring governor of HMP High Down, and see first-hand the power of trail-blazing prison governors to turn prisoners’ lives around.

I’m looking forward to meeting more and working to spread best practice across the prison estate.
Today @hmphighdown I saw how X-ray body scanners stop illegal items entering jails to keep prisons safe and stable.

This new technology has stopped 10k smuggling attempts in 74 prisons in the last year, boosting our fight against organised crime.…
The situation at Oakhill STC is unacceptable and the details of the Ofsted report are truly shocking.

I am now considering urgent next steps for the future of Oakhill and will set out a plan shortly.
Recruiting prison leavers can fill skills gaps and cut crime - key to my plan for driving down reoffending.

At HMPs Hewell and Aylesbury, prisoners are being trained to repair bicycles for our brilliant keyworkers.

New skills mean more opportunities upon release and a reduced chance of reoffending. I will improve employment prospects for offenders as a crucial way of cutting crime.
Prisoners @HMPHewell & HMP Aylesbury are working with @LifeCycleUKteam to refurbish old bikes for key workers in hospitals across England.

The men gain valuable skills for employment on release which can help to cut reoffending & better protect society.…
Our drive to protect people from crime by providing prison leavers with basic, temporary housing is working as shown by the BBC. Their report also highlights the brilliant work by probation officers like Lauren to help offenders turn their lives around:…
This is such sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with James’s family. I got to know James from 2006 onwards and worked with him in govt. A smart and brilliant politician, and just a terrific guy. He will be so sorely missed.
A statement on behalf of the Brokenshire family on the death of James Brokenshire MP
Covid-19 cases in prisons are at their lowest for 3 months – thanks to our decisive measures and hard-working staff.

That means we can offer more education and training – improving rehabilitation and ultimately cutting crime.…

Great to re-convene my local business group, Connect, for our first breakfast discussion in person since the pandemic. Valuable discussion with local businesses on the economy, return to work, and criminal justice.
Great to join Katie Holmes, the Mayor, Tim Oliver ⁦@SCCLeader⁩ and the amazing team of volunteers - to open the new kitchen at Claygate Youth and Community Hub - with everything from baking to basketball for local young people to get involved in.
Home must be a place of safety and refuge for everyone, not least those who have experienced abuse. Our partnership with @NYorksPolice ensures victims can’t be contacted from within prison, preventing abusers from continuing their campaign of terror behind bars.

As our courts work at full capacity to recover from the pandemic, I also want them to be greener. Our £40m investment will help to reduce the carbon footprint of our buildings by 10%.…

What a fantastic Conference!

We’re getting on with the job to deliver the people’s priorities.

We will seize this moment and together we will #BuildBackBetter.
It is right that the offenders who have damaged their communities should be seen to pay back with their time and hard graft.

With new projects such as the one run by @CanalRiverTrust, offenders will do their bit to restore the natural beauty of our country's waterways.
Community punishments will be better focused on paying back society, with new outdoor projects so the public see the benefits & justice being done.

We’re investing up to £93m to recruit 500 more unpaid work supervisors and develop new partnerships.…
I want us to lead the world in using technology to fight crime.

Today I announced £180m of funding to expand the use of tags to cut burglary and theft and keep people safe from domestic abusers.

Garden waste latest: @ElmbridgeBC RA/Liberal Democrat groups refuse to set a timetable to reinstate collections, calling Conservative questions on behalf of residents "ridiculous" and "ludicrous". Lots of excuses but no ideas from this shower.…
Tech & innovation will drive our justice system as we build back from the pandemic. We’re seeing the impact of our online reforms. 76% of probate and 72% of divorce applications are now done online – meaning we can free up court space and deliver a better service for the public.
The brutal murder of Sarah Everard has been utterly shocking and Wayne Couzens will rightly spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Protecting women and girls is my number one priority as Justice Secretary – everyone should be able to walk home at night without fear.
More survivors of rape and sexual violence will be able to pre-record their evidence after our s28 pilot is extended to a further four courts today.

We are reforming how the justice system responds to these abhorrent crimes, to protect victims and to help deliver justice.
We’re extending a pilot that uses tech to allow more victims and witnesses of rape and modern slavery to pre-record their cross-examination.

The extension delivers on a commitment we made in our end-to-end Rape Review.

On #HiddenHeroes Day I pay tribute to the incredible staff working in our prison, probation and youth justice services.

They work hard to deliver our priorities – rehabilitating prisoners to help them turn their backs on crime while keeping the public safe.

It is an honour and a privilege to be sworn in as Lord Chancellor today.

Taking the difficult decisions, getting on with the job, our plan is working.

Our firm but fair Borders Bill has entered Commons cttee stage.

It will prevent those with no right to be here from clogging up our justice system by stopping repeated appeals in cases without merit.

My priority is increasing court capacity to deliver swifter, fairer justice.
The tragic death of a baby at HMP Bronzefield was totally unacceptable. My thoughts are with all those affected. We made important improvements to care received by pregnant women in prison & we will work across gov't to ensure they get the same support as those in the community.
The new Monument Nightingale court will provide vital additional courtrooms to give Londoners faster access to justice.

We are investing £255 million to help the criminal justice system recover from the pandemic, deliver swifter justice and support victims.
A new Nightingale Court opens this week in Monument, the fifth to open in London.

These temporary courts are helping to increase capacity, minimise delays, and deliver swifter justice as we tackle the impact of COVID on the justice system.
