PSA to everyone going to watch A QUIET PLACE in cinemas - don’t buy nachos.

Nachos are amazing but every crunch will make an audible, distracting noise in a film that’s very quiet. Be considerate to other viewers and yourself. Enjoy this film with the silence it demands.

A QUIET PLACE is an extraordinary piece of work. Terrific acting, but the main thing is the SILENCE, and how it makes the camera's eye open wide in a way few movies manage.

@Callingcollin @voxcinemas The protocol is for cinema staff to be around to monitor/control noisy/disruptive audience. But as always, left to other audience members to ask the noisy ones to shut up.

@hindmezaina @Callingcollin Not sure about Vox but in my recent experience, @ReelCinemas is great about this. They have someone in the cinema every 15-20 minutes checking in on things.

I saw a tweet by an American being surprised that Hollywood films release in Dubai.

He wouldn’t be pleased to know that we get to see most major Hollywood films almost two days before the US release.

Camera (2018):

Was looking forward to seeing this Emirati film and I’m shocked. It’s a lean, mean and surprisingly brutal contained thriller. It’s not groundbreaking and can get melodramatic, but it’s a solid genre effort by @JustAbood.

Support local cinema. It’s out now!

I've talked about these every time I've given a workshop at a film school, but this video does it perfectly.

Every film student should see this because these are the most crippling problems I see in student shorts. Not hard to fix once you're aware.

Replying to @MadHattar :
@MadHattar @hindmezaina Definitely a nicer experience if you have seen the first one since you see the villains having evolved interestingly. But there’s no connection at all to the first film. New family. Still works as a standalone film and is arguably a better made film.

Watched THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT. Scared me a lot. I liked it. LOVE the pool scene and the use of 1980s pop music. Thanks @FaisalHashmi for nudging me not to miss it. (Not had a chance to see the 1st one, and didn't want to miss this one at the cinema.)

@FaisalHashmi @MEFCC Faisal you are way more than a fan. From awesome workshops and panels and the MEFCC Film nights we used to run, you’ve been MEFCC Family from the start. Gutted I won’t be there this year but super excited for yet another awesome MEFCC 😍

Ready Player One (2018):

A fascinating, ridiculously entertaining adventure that proves that Spielberg can still deliver a blockbuster. The most I’ve enjoyed a Spielberg film since Minority Report. I was a skeptic based on the trailers but I’m so glad to be proven wrong. Lovely.

Replying to @FaisalHashmi :
And as a horror fan, I hugely enjoyed the entire surprise sub-plot involving a genre classic I love. It isn’t mentioned in the trailers so I won’t spoil it here, but it’s the highlight of the film for me by far in a film full of pop culture references. Watch this in cinemas.

Super excited for @MEFCC this weekend. Watched the event grow tenfold in size ever since its inception and this year seems like its biggest yet.

Glad to have been a small part of their journey in the last few years and hopefully I continue to be involved!

A Quiet Place (2018):

One of the most skillfully made horror films I’ve seen in a while. A genre exercise that utilizes sound design to create nail biting suspense. Masterfully acted too. John Krasinski is the surprise horror director we didn’t know we had.

Brilliant.

I started going to movies by myself at the age of 12. I was ashamed & lived in fear of being seen & judged by other kids who knew me - something that took me years to let go of. But to this day it’s one of my favorite ways to see a film. filmschoolrejects.com/yolo-go-solo/

Annihilation (2018):

Alex Garland’s new sci-fi adventure is a heady exploration of extraterrestrial life and humanity that I need to watch again. The finale is one of the trippiest things I’ve ever seen and put me in a Lynchian daze. There’s so much ambition here. Good stuff.

The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)

The 2008 original was an effective slasher. This sequel starts off fine enough but director Johannes Roberts amps it up with a truly bonkers and entertaining finale that cements this as a solid slasher that doesn’t repeat itself. Good fun.

@CraigKoban ANNIHILATION was a Paramount film who kept their rights in the US and sold Netflix only international rights. So it doesn’t count as their own choice since it’s only theirs international and it didn’t release in cinemas abroad. They’ve always offered cinemas the choice but -

Replying to @FaisalHashmi :
@CraigKoban - but most cinemas refuse to screen their films if they’re already online just to not set a precedent. Netflix will never budget from their day and date Netflix release strategy. Amazon however does the cinema route before online like tradition.

I 100% agree with Spielberg that #Netflix original movies should be nominated for Emmys and not Oscars.

Replying to @CraigKoban :
@CraigKoban But Netflix does release their films in a handful of cinemas that don’t mind their concurrent online release strategy. It’s just super limited. So technically that makes it qualify as a theatrically released film.

Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)

The sequel ditches the gritty grounded feel of Del Toro’s original for a more dumb and goofy approach that’s eerily similar to ‘Independence Day Resurgence’ in plot. But the action scenes are thrilling and it’s the perfect film to watch in 4DX.
