It can be hard to detect signal from noise while teams are experimenting & trying combinations but Smith's absence from today's game & Green playing despite not being in the World Cup squad is interesting. #AUSvWI

This is a genuinely interesting poll result. Over 220,000 people voted & although the demographic is likely skewed towards young, Asian fans that is representative of the game’s primary fanbase. The debate is obviously more nuanced than a Twitter poll but it’s still noteworthy.
Packed stadium, two best teams in the world in the final, which format?

Since the start of 2021 Temba Bavuma has a total batting impact of -80 in T20Is; he is South Africa's only negative impact batter in their World Cup squad in this period. #INDvSA

Shimron Hetmyer was arguably the best player in the West Indies squad (close call v Evin Lewis & Nicholas Pooran) & one of the toughest to replace. It hardly needs to be said that the West Indies & the World Cup will be significantly poorer for his absence. #T20WorldCup

Not Pooran?

Good shout. My mistake. It’s a close call between all three of them. Good debate actually - three lefties all in different roles: opener, spin hitter and pace hitter.

Bowling-heavy teams generally win more consistently but there are talent pools of deep batting & shallow bowling when it is worth considering batting-heavy balances & looking to blow teams out of the water. It's unlikely India do this but it's worth thinking about. #T20WorldCup

Extreme batting-heavy: Rohit, KL, VK, Sky, Pant, Hardik, DK, four bowlers. Batting-heavy: Rohit, KL, VK, Sky, Hooda, Hardik, DK, four bowlers. Bowling-heavy: Rohit, KL, VK, Sky, Hardik, Axar, DK, four bowlers. #T20WorldCup

The middle ground between this tactic and the current 'bowling-heavy' balance would be to select Hooda as the extra batter instead of Pant. Hooda would still provide batting power but would provide a bowling option v LHs & cover for Hardik. #T20WorldCup

The most extreme batting-heavy XI is to pick Pant as the extra batter & rely entirely on Hardik as the fifth bowler. This is high-risk & makes it almost impossible to pick Axar as one of the four bowlers because there is no cover for negative finger spin match-ups. #T20WorldCup

If Bumrah is out of the World Cup India should consider going all-in on a team with extreme batting depth & using Hardik as the fifth bowler. Their batting strength is ridiculous backing it & emboldening it might be their best means of covering Bumrah’s absence. #INDvSA

The strike rate of Pakistan's numbers 3-11 by year since 2020 (when Rizwan started opening) is telling: 141 in 2022, 130 in 2021 and now 123 in 2022. In 2016-2020 Pakistan's numbers 3-11 faced 72 balls per match; since Rizwan moved to open they face 55. #PAKvENG

Babar & Rizwan are not a bad thing for Pakistan's team; far from it - both contribute positive impacts (Rizwan +7, Babar +2 per match) & they work brilliantly with a strong bowling attack. It's just worth saying their excellence makes improving the middle order hard. #PAKvENG

Pakistan's reliance on their openers is a self-perpetuating issue. Openers bat deep ➡️ don't afford middle order crease time➡️middle order struggles because big impacts with few opportunities is hard ➡️ top order assume even more responsibility to protect middle order 🔁 #PAKvENG

Best English contributions of the series: Brook, Duckett & Roller. Great work mate.

England had nine players with positive CricViz Match Impacts in that series: Duckett, Brook (arguably the series' two biggest findings - Brook is hard to leave out now), Wood, Topley, Curran, Salt (who is pushing Hales' starting spot hard), Dawson, Moeen & Gleeson. #PAKvENG

Notably, England's biggest negative impact players across the series were Hales & Rashid. Hales could be replaced by Salt, but the latter is definitely going to start & his form is a real concern for England. #PAKvENG

Only three Pakistanis end the series with a positive average impact: Rauf, Rizwan & Babar - all of whom were already guaranteed starters. The main learning is Iftikhar who recorded a neutral batting & bowling impact & probably locks down one of the middle order spots. #PAKvENG
Replying to @fwildecricket
Asif should also be a lock: no one else in Pakistan can do what he does. Which leaves two other batting spots up for grabs - number three: Shan v Fakhar & the other middle order position: Khushdil v Haider. None of them have made compelling cases of late. #PAKvENG

Pakistan's Attack Rating (expected SR assuming clean contact) in this innings of 187 is the lowest of any innings in this series - in the match in which they are chasing the 2nd biggest total. Having shown great intent in games 1 to 6 Pakistan have backed off today. #PAKvENG

Phil Salt strips England's T20 approach back: "It's very simple: we want to go out there, be on the front foot and put teams on the back foot"

Today's Powerplays have been another great example of how tactically opposed these teams are. While Babar looked to get his eye in, take his time & take it deep on a tricky pitch; England have looked to break the chase open while the ball is hard & the field is up. #PAKvENG

After the apocalypse Pakistan will still be churning out scores of 160-170. Their ability to consistently get 'a score' is so impressive & it is thanks largely to Rizwan & Babar's reliability. It's a method that works well with what is typically a strong bowling attack. #PAKvENG

There's been some discussion in the media that Pakistan have a problem against bouncers. In yesterday's press conference Moeen played it down but since the start of 2021 only Ireland (13) average less than Pakistan (17) v bouncers. Even Bangladesh (24) are better. #PAKvENG
Replying to @fwildecricket
In this series Pakistan have lost 12 wickets to bouncers at an average of 13.25; against anything fuller from pace bowlers they have averaged 31 (15 wickets). #PAKvENG

Adil Rashid's bowling average in T20Is this year of 31 is his worst in five years & his average bowling impact of -3.6 is his worst since his first year in international cricket, way back in 2009. #PAKvENG

Iftikhar's SR v spin in the last two years is 104 (compared to 155 v pace). In the same time Shadab's SR v spin is 137 (& 145 v pace). Pakistan should consider using Shadab through the middle to target spin & delay Iftikhar's entry so he faces more pace & less spin. #PAKvENG

This will be an interesting spell for Rashid. He's not had a great series but without M Wood he's England's primary wicket-taking threat through the middle. His googly to Babar is one to keep an eye out for. Haider may well target him. #PAKvENG

In the Powerplay this year England's attacking shot percentage is higher than in any year since 2013 and their false shot percentage is higher than any year since 2013. Essentially they've become even more aggressive and it's compromised their control in the phase. #PAKvENG

England have really struggled against the swinging ball in the Powerplay this year. Their average of 18 against balls swinging more than 0.5° is the fourth worst among Full Member nations (only Afg, SL & Ban are worse) & England's worst record in a calendar year. #PAKvENG

In a new format, we'll be doing lots of Twitter spaces/podcasts around the #T20WorldCup. Lots will be quite broad, but plenty will be on nice bitesize specific topics - if you have any suggestions for these, let us know!

It’s been awesome to be involved with @TheDesertVipers recruitment process & I’m looking forward to consulting them during the upcoming @ILT20Official season; alongside @kieran_cricket as performance analyst. #ILT20

England losing 2 or more wickets in the Powerplay in Men's T20Is:

2020 - 2 times in 12 games.
2021 - 5 times in 17 games.
2022 - 11 times in 16 games.

Pretty clear area where England have regressed this year, so much so Roy was dropped - who should open with Buttler in Aus?

A small but notable thing this year has been the boundary hitting of Pakistan’s lower order (9-11). Naseem in the Asia Cup is the obvious example but Rauf’s six last night was also crucial. Pak 9-11’s 23% boundaries this year is a big rise on 12% in the last five years. #PAKvENG

2016-now Pakistan are one of the most interesting teams in T20 history. Their commitment to a bowling-heavy strategy is really cool & the fact they have better batting resources than perhaps even they realise makes debates around their batting approach more pertinent. #PAKvENG

The historic return of England to Pakistan; high scoring games, low scoring games, tight finishes; a clash of strategies - batting-heavy v bowling-heavy. This series is magic. #PAKvENG

There you go. Lefties stop Nawaz returning, Jamal takes the ball, England target him & it brings a wicket. Even with RH Woakes at the crease Pakistan will probably still be reluctant to bowl Nawaz with Moeen there. Jamal will probably complete the Nawaz-Jamal quota. #PAKvENG
Replying to @fwildecricket
Pakistan are backloading the Jamal/Nawaz over - perhaps until the 20th over, using Wasim Jr in the 18th and perhaps Rauf in the 19th to kill the game before it gets to that point. #PAKvENG

In reply to @fwildecricket
If the left-handers Moeen & Sam C bat deep it might dissuade Pakistan from returning back to Nawaz because while it might buy a wicket it could allow England back into the game. Instead Pakistan may turn to debutant Jamal, who England will surely target. #PAKvENG

Iftikhar's remaining overs could be critical in this game. He could get through cheap overs with England pairing LHs but he's ostensibly Pakistan's weakest bowler & may need to be taken on to give some breathing room later on. Moeen isn't afraid to take on away spin. #PAKvENG

Pakistan's Attack Rating (expected strike rate assuming clean contact) in this series of 205 is the highest they have ever recorded. It's brought mixed returns but this series has marked a clear shift in Pakistan's batting intent. #PAKvENG
Replying to @fwildecricket
However, Pakistan's Timing Rating (a measure of shot contact quality) is their third lowest ever in a 3+ match series. You'd expect a Timing drop-off with a high Attack Rating but it might also suggest some of these players aren't well-suited to extreme aggression. #PAKvENG

Haider is a hugely exciting player but since his breakthrough year in 2020 (ave 28, SR 151, ave imp +1.8) his returns have fallen off a cliff (ave 20, SR 127, ave imp -1.7). With two games left in the series Pakistan desperately need him to find some form. #PAKvENG
