Hard to get fully invested in the NFL because its rules are so pedantic. That drop by Chase is clearly a fumble if you鈥檙e playing football at any level, and yet 鈥 because replay review & 鈥渇ootball moves鈥 matter more than common sense 鈥 it needs to be examined with a microscope.

Northern Illinois鈥 fate wasn鈥檛 sealed in a 31-23 loss at Kentucky on Saturday until the Wildcats recovered an onside kick with 2:43 to play. And the NIU defenders were a big reason why. shawlocal.com/daily-chronicl鈥

Instant gamer from @JoshMooreHL here. A follo from him and a column from me on the way.

Justin Lynch -- a wildcat QB all night -- fakes out a UK rusher and keeps for a Huskies TD to pull it within 31-23.

NIU going for two.
Replying to @JoshMooreHL
And the conversion fails. Kentucky 31, Northern Illinois 23, 2:47 left. Some popcorn eating to do in this one, still!

Tayvion Robinson must not like dogs.

Kentucky 31, Northern Illinois 14, 8:46 left to play.

Dane Key almost put this one away for Kentucky. Slipped right through the tips of his fingers.

End 3Q: Kentucky 24, Northern Illinois 14

Huskies gonna go for it on 4th and 1 at their own 34?

They do, and Justin Lynch gets it.

NIU forces a field goal. Matt Ruffolo makes a 49-yard try, and the Huskies trail by double digits for the first time tonight.

UK 24, NIU 14, 3:04 left 3Q.

Kentucky forced to punt. Northern Illinois did its job, but will start its next drive at its own 10.

Mitchell Kennedy busts right through and gets Will Levis down on the turf.

Feels like the biggest drive of the game for NIU, here.

A near interception by NIU on one play.

A 70-yard completion on the next.

Tough for the Huskies.

The good for NIU: --Ground game is on track. A yard shy of 100 there. --Ethan Hampton has looked comfortable in his first start. --Generally taking as much advantage as possible of what a high-quality defense has given them. The bad: --Secondary is struggling.
Replying to @JoshMooreHL
Another positive: Tristen Tewes has been a bonafide problem. Five catches for only 31 yards, but they've all come in big moments. Been a significant safety valve for Hampton, who's 8-for-12 overall. Oh, also has both Huskies touchdowns.

Halftime: Northern Illinois 14, Kentucky 14

Awesome play call and execution.

Ethan Hampton flips to Shemar Thornton on a reverse, and Thornton easily gets a second TD ball to Tristen Tewes.

Huskies tie it up right before halftime in Lexington.

Northern Illinois 14, Kentucky 14, 6 seconds left 2Q.

Huskies have 2nd and goal from UK's 3-yard line out of a timeout. A 9-yard dart from Ethan Hampton to Fabian McCray got 'em inside the 10.

Fumble recovered by NIU's Nick Rattin and the Huskies are quickly in position to score again before the half.

A 4th-and-2 decision forthcoming for NIU. Kentucky timeout, 1:02 left first half. The Huskies are at UK's 46.

Huskies tried to get the Cats to jump. Failed, and got a delay of game in the process. Now 4th and 7. NIU will punt.

Huskies have crossed midfield with 1:16 left in the first half. Trying to keep the ball out of Kentucky's hands.

Marques Cox down briefly for NIU but he walks off under his own power.

Huskies get to Will Levis again, but not before he connects with Tayvion Robinson, who covers 69 yards (nice) for a UK TD.

That was the longest play of Robinson's career. Hurting NIU secondary getting tested.

Kentucky 14, NIU 7, 5:08 left 2Q.

Keidron Smith with a pass break-up to force another NIU punt. This one goes 61 yards and takes a bounce out of bounds at UK's 2-yard line. Best outcome the Huskies could've reasonably asked for.
