On this day in 1990, our Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird had a last flight befitting its incredible career, setting a new speed record while flying from LA to DC in 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 20 seconds, averaging 2,124 mph.
#OTD in 1990, the SR-71 set the world speed record from L.A. to D.C. in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 20 seconds. That's fast!

To capture imagery at this speed, NRO built the Technical Objective Camera (TEOC) that could take photos up to 23 miles away for the reconnaissance aircraft.

As ambitious as the MOL program was, it lost funding in 1969 and the program was cancelled before launching. Despite this, its legacy in the U.S. space program lives on.

GRAB was instrumental to reconnaissance technology and provided essential tracking of Soviet air defense radar capabilities. It set the foundation for what NRO continues to achieve for 62 years and counting!

He stated that the program wouldn't deviate from the UN resolution against
orbiting weapons, reiterating its goal to investigate manned orbital capabilities.
