“I’m a proud Christian Nationalist."
-- U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

Christian nationalism, an extreme ideology that's interwoven with white supremacy, used to be way out there on the fringe. Now, 61% of Republicans embrace its core premise.

"We tend to think of the Ku Klux Klan as an anti-Black organization — which, of course, it was — but it was also antisemitic, anti-Catholic, nativist. It was a white Christian nationalist organization."

61% of GOP voters now say they support tearing down the wall of separation between church and state and… declaring the U.S. to be a Christian nation. Doug Mastriano and Marjorie Taylor Greene are no longer the fringe of the GOP. They’re the mainstream.

Taking a stand for journalism without preconditions, @amanpour declined to wear a headscarf as demanded by Iranian President Raisi. @amanpour refused to be intimidated by an authoritarian zealot who sought to impose his will beyond the borders of his country.

This was going to be President Raisi’s first ever interview on US soil, during his visit to NY for UNGA. After weeks of planning and eight hours of setting up translation equipment, lights and cameras, we were ready. But no sign of President Raisi. 2/7

The far right knows that rigged and undemocratic state legislatures are the key to imposing an extremist worldview on the rest of us.

So whether it’s the independent state legislature theory or this, they will keep pushing to maximize power in these bastions of extremism.

@NicholsUprising I always love your columns, but especially this one on monarchy. I could not believe the media and how goony Americans were over this funeral. It was an incredible show though, and each person knew his or her part without a hitch. Katherine, one of the Quakers.

This is mind blowing. The Trump-appointed head of the World Bank is a climate crisis denier. The bank is still funding fossil fuel projects. At the intersection of ignorance and capitalism, you can almost see the end of the world.
🌎🔥 Today I asked World Bank president @DavidMalpassWBG if he believed in the scientific consensus that the man made burning of fossil fuels is rapidly and dangerously warming the planet.

“I’m not a scientist,” he said.

Here’s a thread about the remarkable exchange. 🧵 1/ pic.twitter.com/t0nQheybzi

Let’s face it: There are a lot of Americans who long for monarchy. I’m not one of them. Kings and queens are the antecedents of oligarchy, plutocracy and economic royalism. I have no taste for it.

Perhaps the fascination with the British monarchy on the part of the American media, our elected officials, and much of the public is unsurprising. But it’s important to recognize that debates about the monarchy are about more than pomp and pageantry.

The United States was founded as a country that did not have an elected Senate.

A growing number of Republicans want to repeal the 17th amendment and return to that anti-democratic state of affairs.

The next frontier in the GOP assault on democracy involves a scheme to repeal the 17th Amendment and let GOP-controlled legislatures name senators.

They want to take the right to elect senators away from the voters because voters keep electing Democrats.

What would happen if the 17th amendment was repealed and state legislators—as opposed to voters—named senators?

Because of gerrymandering, Rs control 62% of legislative chambers. They could block D’s Sherrod Brown, Tammy Baldwin. Jon Tester & many more.

Anti-democratic Republicans are talking about repealing the 17th amendment so that state legislators—not voters—would name US Senators. Why? Legislatures are heavily gerrymandered to favor the GOP, which currently controls 62% of all legislative chambers.
