Leaving aside all of the problems with the USICA (and the long-term growth of private R&D spending), the basic premise behind govt funding for R&D is that private cos won't fund "moonshot" basic research. Seems problematic that govt funding systematically avoids it too.

Would private capital have found mRNA sooner if Kariko & her bosses weren't so focused on getting state funds? "No way of knowing" (as these researchers say), but we should at least be a little more skeptical that more state funding will definitely help us find the next Kariko.

It was fine - great for the first hour but kinda petered out (music and story) in the second half. Good direction, visuals, and actors, however.

Big takeaways from this episode:

- @AlyssaRosenberg knows a lot about musicals!
- @SonnyBunch can't be charmed!
- I was once in a musical!

Lol, Dem. Rep. Foster takes the first *explicit* shot of the day at the Senate's R&D approach. "Not an accident these House bills have received overwhelming support from the scientific and business communities, while the competing alternative from the Senate, maybe not so much."
