#thanksMaddie: For hiring me. For taking a chance on a reporter with no advanced science training. For centering BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and historically marginalized voices. For building this space for us. I didn’t think I belonged in science. You showed me I was wrong.

WOW. This is so crazy, and miraculously sounded great. Props to @scottdetrow @NPRMichel and ALL the staff that made them sound great.
I know some of you are wondering what the heck was up @NPRWeekend today. It was a day unlike any I've experienced. Simple answer: multiple system failures, including audio routing and playback, scripts, email. Things started melting down in the 30 minutes leading up to the show.

Working together, @GLIDEsf , @codetenderloin @SFCHC415 & @ucsfbhhi vaccinated ~ 100 ppl in the TL today--by bringing vaccines to the streets. Even in SF, nearing herd immunity, there are many unvax. To protect all, we need to take vaccines to where ppl are. It's that simple.

Any effort by the government to drive health care prices down -- whether it's through negotiation of drug prices or a public option -- requires some kind of leverage to bring industry to the table.

Otherwise, it amounts to little more than saying "pretty please."
...and COVID widened this gap
Our analysis found the U.S. lost 3.6M additional potential years of life before age 75 due to COVID in 2020. 2X more per capita than next peer country, and 14 yrs lost per life in the U.S. vs. 8 yrs in peer countries on avg…

Shortening life expectancy:

We tolerate unconscionable poverty &

We're fat (tho less early mortality)

We're violent/armed (incr in mortality at younger age) &

We're depressed/addicted

Better social policy (less than major change in clinical health policy) is needed

My guess is that this is largely related to the slow & unwieldy @CDCgov clearance process (which has gone to a whole new level of insanity w/ COVID).

This paper has probably been in the works for ≥ 4w (before the May data was available).

But, it further propagates mistrust.

We also have no public health lobby. Alcohol has a lobby. Guns has a lobby. Health care has a lobby. But, not health. Health is an afterthought. Prevention is broken into disease-based silos - heart disease, diabetes, etc. - rather than addressing their common causes. 15/18
A little over a year ago, I wondered how many contact tracers there were in the U.S. I couldn’t find the number anywhere.

So I sat on the bed in my sister-in-law’s childhood bedroom and emailed and called all 50 state health departments to find out.

The answer? 11,142.

This is the sixth — and likely last — contact tracing survey with the brilliant people @JHSPH_CHS A year after the largest scale-up of contact tracing in U.S. history, how’d it go? And what’s next now that there’s finally money on the table?…

One day after rounds I had this intense urge to #doubledutch like I did every summer day as a kid.

And so, after a quick Google search, I found a place to do just that—with strangers. Damn, it was fun. (And I still had mad skills.)

Get busy living, y’all. Happy Thursday.

So, I married an ER doc...

PROS: expert-level care for dislocated elbows, lacerated eyelids, & removal of stitches (yep, all the same kid 🤦🏾‍♂️)

CONS: I woke up this morning to her doing a jaw-thrust maneuver on me because I was *allegedly* snoring (see below)

Y’all ain’t right
Happy pride everyone 🌈🦄🏳️‍🌈

I fear that we are reverting to viewing COVID-19 as an INDIVIDUAL MEDICAL CARE issue

instead of understanding that it remains a COLLECTIVE PUBLIC HEALTH issue

and demands continued comprehensive public health responses.

Our narrow focus on the individual continues to harm us.
