Perhaps the most striking thing about this tweet is that the Russian ambassador to India felt the need to say this.

President @vonderleyen will give a speech to @merics_eu and @epc_eu on EU-China relations next Thursday.

She will then travel to China with French President @EmmanuelMacron the following week.

Details and programme will follow.

I don’t think Chinese people cared about India banning TikTok either tbh there was no breathless following the story

The company on the other hand did care since India had been TikTok 's largest overseas market (by user numbers at least)

Having said that, I think GoI might change its approach in times to come. Depends on how China handles its relations with India.

I don't think it's about engagement w Taiwan per se. As you've documented, been more on that front already. But i do think they distinguish btwn bilateral engagement & being visibly part of a coalition on this. To me, if it's easier for GOI to do things bilat, that's fine.

I agree. I’ve been highlighting subtle changes in India’s Taiwan policy, particularly MEA’s statement post-Pelosi visit in my writings. I feel more could be done here. A mention of stability in the Taiwan Strait (perhaps in a Quad statement) won’t hurt India.

China pressures its neighbors & is baffled when they feel more threatened & seek security with other partners.

Russia invades a neighbor & is baffled when its other neighbors feel more threatened & seek security with other partners.

So, the Japan-Ukraine joint statement has a mention of the significance of peace & stability in the Taiwan Strait but India still remains indifferent!

So frustrated with this overcautious approach!

For what & whom?

If you aim to be a global power, act like one first!
Replying to @sanahashmi1
India might not put it in joint stmts, but, as you know, it has used language re Taiwan/cross-strait dynamics that is consistent with what is in these other countries' statements (incl "peace and stability") + critiqued militarization of TS + not validated One China principle

Reverse of what some in India argue (Russia not perfect, but need to keep it onside)
Some EU leaders react to the Xi-Putin meeting with a renewed sense of urgency to draw China closer to Europe.

Has there been an uptick in travel to India (e.g. Goa) too?
Tens of thousands of Russians have traveled to Bali over the past year, and some have taken up work in violation of their visa conditions. That's caused a backlash in the otherwise laid-back holiday hot spot. on.wsj.com/3lvdgka

That’s fair. But I think a longer term path does exist if Xi is able to build trust and confidence. He is after all most likely president for life now, so time isn’t as much of a problem.
Replying to @ZeeMohamed_
Time is a factor though. Because the longer PRC presses India, the deeper India's partnerships with several of China's rivals will get. (I'm sceptical Xi can build trust in India. At best he can take advantage of doubts about US reliability/commitment in India to slow 🇮🇳🇺🇸)

Pretty myopic from Xi’s viewpoint too — there are plenty of cracks to exploit in US-India relations.

I actually think that it’s even more in Russia’s interest that India & China bury their hatchet: thediplomat.com/2023/03/in-ind…

Has been the case for last couple of decades — just like it was in the 1950s/early 1960s. But recently, like back in the 60s, Moscow hasn't managed to persuade Beijing to stop pressing India or Delhi to concede to China's terms.

You're not the only one who thinks deepening Russia-China alignment should lead India to deepen -- & not just maintain -- its Russia ties to give Moscow non-Beijing options.

Problem will remain that no matter what India can offer Russia, China can offer it more.
In reply to @tanvi_madan
I agree, that's why I believe india should strengthen its relationship with russia even more

Yep.

If anything, one hopes that this acceptance of needing to be open to imports to enhance exports will be broader (i.e. not just w/r/t China or to attract companies like Apple specifically)
As manufacturing in India grows, so will trade with China due to global dominance of the Chinese components ecosystem. The longterm trend of diversifying from China will co-exist with a short-term rise in imports from China, as well as with strategic competition with China 1/2

Given that there seems to be more support for "Khalistan" in the UK and Canada than there is in Punjab, you'd think they'd just establish the place in the UK or Canada.

Heard this a lot recently. And it's a thesis of the Ackerman/Stavridis novel.

The problem w this theory is that India can't really sit out US-China competition -- as some thought it did the US-Soviet one -- because of its geography & own rivalry w/ China
tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…

If China gets into a cold war with the west, it weakens them. India can focus on economic growth rather than getting into this food fight.

Some in India continue to press the narrative of indigenous vs foreign.

But should not be seen as a binary or in opposition to each other.

As the Oscars made clear, "foreign" -- in this case Netflix -- can indeed give "indigenous" a far wider audience & greater benefits.
