Not, presumably, coincidentally, the day after Olaf Scholz's government is inaugurated in Germany.
On Thursday, Emmanuel Macron will give a big press conference to present the priorities of the French presidency of the Council of the EU that kicks off on January 1st.

Stay tuned.

With marijuana on the verge of being legalized in Germany, ⁦@tom_nuttall⁩ asks (tongue in cheek folks) whether Angela Merkel might spend her retirement cultivating cannabis in her fertile home region of the Uckermark economist.com/leaders/2021/1…

98% of SPD delegates have decided that it's a good idea for their party to lead the next govt. Next up: FDP (tomorrow); and the Greens (party membership vote result Monday). Neither expected to be nail-biters.

Angela Merkel devotes the last of her 600+ weekly video podcasts as chancellor to—what else?—the fourth wave of covid-19 and a plea to vaccine refuseniks to get jabbed. pic.twitter.com/t7PmSa29Td

Her first was devoted to the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and her hope that it would lead to a "big party outside the stadiums".

Had a couple of distressed phonecalls this evening from #migrants at the camp at #Bruzgi in #Belarus, who say they're coming under a lot of pressure to leave - back to Iraq or across the border which is a kamikaze mission in this weather given #Poland won't admit them.

I think this is known as "heightening the contradictions".

Still five days to squeeze another one in before Merkel leaves.
New Austrian chancellor will be interior minister @karlnehammer, party leaders confirm. He will be the sixth chancellor in 5 years. Top that, Italy! #schnitzelmeetsdolcevita

Introducing the little country that reminds Germany correspondents what a piece of work something can be that they thought they could cover "on the side" when nothing is going on in Berlin.

The German version of "left on economics, right on culture". Most popular policies of🚦coalition: raising min wage, expanding renewables. Least popular: legalising weed (tho fairly even split), easing citizenship rules for migrants, armed drones for Bundeswehr, cutting voting age

Rearranging these hokey pieces for brass band was no mean feat. The bassline was assigned to the tuba, apparently.

One breach in freeborn Germans' unalienable rights at a time.

Fireworks ban on New Year's Eve, and @KuehniKev as SPD general secretary. And people say Germany is unreformable!

"The FDP has accepted such a long list of financial manoeuvres that the debt brake begins to resemble a fig leaf more than a constraint." Don't agree with every word by @MESandbu, but I share his optimism that🚦may amount to more than the sum of its parts.

I wouldn't use "nudging" for such restrictive policies. It does manage to push up to a degree, but then a plateau is reached. Restriction is not in proportion to benefits imo. Better would be extra insurance premium for the unvaxxed (with proof required they form extra burden) pic.twitter.com/S27iJyqOaZ
Replying to @pietercleppe
We have to get the number up; how to do so is an empirical not an ideological question imo. The "freedoms" of the unvaxxed curtail the freedoms of the much larger majority. You keep nudging until you reach the mandate, which sadly is where we're probably headed in Germany.

In reply to @tom_nuttall
Why is that "good"? I am pro vaxx but: 1. to protect, you need to test. Vaccinated people can still infect others (even if less so) 2. to convince people to get vaxxed, this may backfire - apart from the fact it is scary to have the state bully people into a medical procedure #2g
Replying to @pietercleppe
Nudging the unvaxxed isn't incompatible with testing, and indeed tests are being ramped up again, albeit too slowly. And the bump in first-time vaxxers since the spread of 2G suggests the opposite of your second point.

Yeah, if Austria is any indication that will last until the intensive care beds run out. Until then, party on!
Replying to @MKarnitschnig
Could be. Austrian ICU occupancy decoupled from Germany a few months ago and the gap has grown ever since - and will presumably continue to do so for the foreseeable.

Early signs are that the burden of the fresh restrictions due to be announced in Germany tomorrow will fall almost entirely on the unvaccinated (bar closure of clubs in covid hotspots and mask mandates in schools). Good. tagesspiegel.de/politik/beschl…

It wasn't until our editorial meeting today that I realized Brits say "oh-MY-kron" (or -krən). I thought everyone had just skipped classics, until I realized all my British colleagues did it.

In the US it's "OH-mi-kron" (as it is, roughly, in modern Greek).
