Britain's oldest door can be found by the entrance to the Chapter House inside Westminster Abbey.

The door was constructed sometime in the 1050s. The ring-pattern of the timber indicates that the tree grew in eastern England.

Our memorial to Sir Roger Bannister was dedicated a year ago, #onthisday in 2021. The Purbeck marble ledger stone is in the nave.

Sir Roger was the first man to run a mile in under four minutes and later became a distinguished neurologist.

Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex, was the founder of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and Lady of the Bedchamber to Elizabeth I. She is buried in the Abbey, and at the foot of her tomb effigy is a wooden blue and gold porcupine, from her family's coat of arms.

Everyone is welcome at the Abbey for our annual pilgrimage to the Shrine of St Edward the Confessor on 15 October.

Pilgrims will be able to pray in the Shrine, and the Very Reverend Jeffery John will preach at a Festival Eucharist at 11:30am

A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Sir Terry Wogan took place #onthisday in 2016.

There were performances by Katie Melua and Peter Gabriel. Chris Evans read a Tribute and Joanna Lumley read a poem she had co-written or the service.

At the eastern end of the Abbey is a chapel dedicated to those in the Royal Air Force who died during the Battle of Britain.

The stained glass memorial window in the chapel contains the badges of the fighter squadrons that took part in the Battle.

Hey there! We are traveling to London and would love to visit Westminster Abbey. We will be there the first week of October, however we keep checking for tickets and they are not available. Any word on when October tickets will go on sale? Thanks!

William II was crowned at Westminster Abbey #OTD in 1087.

There is no record of who attended although the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that Archbishop Lanfranc performed the ceremony. It was according to the Anglo-Saxon liturgy. westminster-abbey.org/abbey-commemor…

A window panel was dedicated to writer Elizabeth Gaskell in Poets' Corner #onthisday in 2010.

After her mother's death she spent her childhood in Knutsford, Cheshire, living with her aunt. The area formed a basis for her popular novel Cranford.

Howard Florey was born #OnThisDay in 1898.

He is celebrated for making Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin into a clinically useable product, initiating the era of antibiotics. This is his memorial in the Abbey's nave.

Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey features memorials to over 100 poets and writers.

Those remembered in Poets' Corner include William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters and Charles Dickens.

A bust commemorating writer and minister Charles Kingsley was dedicated in Poets' Corner #onthisday in 1876.

Kingsley's best known works include The Water Babies and Westward Ho!. He was later appointed Canon of Westminster.

Autumn has arrived 🍂

Here are some pictures taken during previous autumn months at Westminster Abbey.
 
Lady Dorothy Stafford, Mistress of the Robes to Elizabeth I, died #OTD in 1604.

She was an influential figure in Elizabeth's court and served the queen for 40 years. Her memorial shows her dressed in black with the figures of her three sons and three daughters kneeling below.
 
George III and Queen Charlotte were crowned in Westminster Abbey #OTD 1761.

They walked to the Abbey from Westminster Hall starting at 11.00am, passing crowds of spectators. The procession and ceremony were so long that they weren't crowned until 3.30pm.

The Lady Chapel in Westminster Abbey is a glorious example of late medieval architecture with a spectacular fan-vaulted ceiling. Construction began in 1503 but wasn't completed until 1516. It is also the burial place of 15 kings and queens.

Westminster Abbey is closed today but will be open on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 September, 9:30am-3:30pm, for those who would like to visit following the State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

You will not be able to fully tour the Abbey and some areas will be closed. There will be no charge and you won't need to book, but please be aware that there could be long queues.
