More on the extraordinary dangers of the election law case #scotus just took up, by ⁦@janestreet⁩ The Supreme Court case voting rights experts say could bring 'chaos' to elections nbcnews.com/politics/supre…

Important thread by former 4th Circuit federal court of appeals judge @judgeluttig on why #SCOTUS should reject the independent state legislature theory in the NC case it just took up.
The argument from the constitutional text of the Elections Clause (Article I, Section 4, Clause 1) that the North Carolina Supreme Court properly interpreted the United States Constitution

"I just can’t overstate how consequential, how radical and consequential this could be," @WendyRWeiser to the @nytimes on how dangerous adopting a fringe theory being pushed in a pending Supreme Court case would be on federal elections. nytimes.com/2022/06/30/us/…

SCOTUS has just decided to take a case out of NC that several conservative Justices seem to be eyeing to liberate rogue state legislatures to undermine fair elections and fair maps. Unpacking what this decision does —and what it might mean 👇 🧵@BrennanCenter

BREAKING: #SCOTUS just took a case that could radically upend election law & remove checks on abusive state legislatures. This oped by ⁦⁦@swerenbecker⁩ explains what’s at stake. A debunked legal theory could used to turn our elections into chaos. latimes.com/opinion/story/…

And now SCOTUS has granted cert on this crazy theory. The radicalism has no bottom.
A dangerous and radical legal theory that could upend American elections is lurking on the Supreme Court's doorstep right now. @swerenbecker @BrennanCenter explains in today's @latimes latimes.com/opinion/story/…

Despondent about the state of your rights and freedoms under American law after this disastrous #SCOTUS term? Read my @BrennanCenter colleague @alicia_bannon in @politico on how state courts and constitutions can fill the breach.
I wrote for @politico about the importance of state constitutional rights. With an increasingly radicalized SCOTUS, we need to pay way more attention to ensuring robust rights enforcement under state constitutions. /1 politico.com/news/magazine/…

A year of work proving Louisiana's congressional map discriminates against Black voters. A 152-page district court opinion finding discrimination, upheld in a 33-page opinion by the most conservative federal court in the nation. Taken away by 6 justices in an act of raw power.

So it seems that the willingness to go along with a crime lasts only as long as someone thinks they can get away with it.

Add this to the list of procedural irregularities in #SCOTUS’s #shadowdocket. This Court appears to be in a *rush* to dismantle the protection of rights and racial equality under U.S. law.
In reply to @mcpli
Also a procedural note, SCOTUS not only granted a stay, it granted cert before judgment in the case, which means the 5th Circuit argument in the case, which had been scheduled on an expedited basis for next week, is off.

🚨🚨🚨 BREAKING: SCOTUS halts the redrawing of Louisiana's congressional map and puts the case on hold until the Supreme Court hears and decides the Alabama redistricting case. Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan dissent.

Let’s not forget that our democracy is under attack from within on multiple fronts.

Is there a word for being shocked but not surprised? There is much need for that word today.

First read of Bruen: Today’s opinion could be the biggest expansion of gun rights by SCOTUS in the country’s history.
It struck down NYS law since early 1900s. There will be more guns, more violence.
