Bottom line, all controversy aside, it comes down to one very basic question: can Marner get what Matthews got and if not, where does that leave both sides this summer? Marner wants to be a Leaf. So his camp pushes as far as it can and then signs. At least that's what I think.
To clarify, the quotes from Darren Ferris in this piece were from yesterday, not from the summer as Ferris mistakenly implied on @FirstUp1050. Just spoke to Ferris, who acknowledged he meant to say they "referred to" events from the summer. bit.ly/2HU0Tcw

Marner is a terrific young talent. He should be a Leaf for a long long time. On no planet is he worth Matthews money though.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Does #Marner want to be a #Leaf more than what he deserves? That is the question since he will not get what he deserves from the #Leafs unless they trade #Nylander.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
I believe it gets done sooner than later. No side could want this nonsense to continue much longer.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Marner is worth as much as Matthews. I don’t see why some are suggesting he should sign for $8M annually?

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
As a huge #LeafsForever and #LetsGoOilers fan, consider this! @cmcdavid97 to the #Leafs for @Marner93 and Nylander, plus maybe a pick or two. Helps both teams, #Oilers with more depth, #Toronto with Cap space to sign everyone. #crazyIknow #mayjustwork

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
or they wait for an eventual offersheet and force the leafs hand into paying them what they want.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Marner wants to maximize his value, I’m sure being a leaf would be his preference but he owes nothing to anyone and he deserves as much as mAthews and Tavares

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Man can you say cap problems for the leafs

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
How about we just enjoy that Matthews is a leaf and enjoy what is hopefully a long playoff run. There is nothing to worry about with Marner. Let Dubas do that while we enjoy our Leafs! #LeafsForever

He cant, and if Marner doesnt realize he's not at Matthews level (regardless of stats), its not going to be pretty.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Then he must sign for max # of years

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Or he could have said "this is Auston's day and like I've said all along we are not negotiating in season" ... but he didnt, so this is a tactic plain and simple

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
$11M x 8 is only middle ground

To get to the bottom of this, has anyone contacted Reimer's mother yet?

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Will be interesting to hear the marner camps reasoning as to why he should be the highest paid winger in the lg. Assuming he wants the 11.6 like you say

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Pierre - is signing bonus immune to suspension as well?

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Goal scoring and centres make more for a reason. I think a better question would be, does Mitch deserve to make more than a player like Kucherov or Kane?

While all the eastern media minions have daily orgasms over the #leafs its funny how the #canadians are only a point back and the #jets and #flames are leading a tougher conference. #nhl

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Manner won’t get nylander or Matthews $. He will be next not to start off next season. He’ll be asking for 11-12

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Let him go play in Carolina (where ever) with no picks for the next 4 years they should have a great team, will be fun losing 50+ games a year. He can watch all his buddies back in TO winning all for the sake of a few million bucks.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Force his hand, trade Marleau, and Zaitsev that’s 10 million. I’m sure he will be upset at the fact they had to trade patty but that’s what he pushed the team to do

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Or he holds out until December 1 and waits for the leafs to buckle. I've heard that this has happened previously.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
we would love to see him come to the Wild

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Do you think that whatever skinner signs for will be where the marner camp starts ? To me thats more comparible than what mathews signed

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
The question becomes how many guys does Marner push out the door now with his contract?

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Expect 9.5-10 AAV---he's 3rd best on the team, will get paid accordingly!

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
If a team sends an offer sheet to Marner with a contract constructed like Mathews’ contract, is compensation to Leafs based on salary or signing bonuses?

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Marner is a great talent, but he plays on the wing. Less defensive responsibilities and doesn't take faceoffs. You can't pay him as much because wingers are the least important players on a team.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
You can’t trade a player for one year after matching an offer sheet so the match and trade scenario some are floating won’t work

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
I’d say Marner deserves more than Matthews. Toronto better pay him or he’s gone.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Basically the same thing Nylander did 😴 boring let's mix it up. Lou make a call #Isles

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
AM, Tavares and Willy all got paid. MM’s gonna want his as well

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
If Marner wants to be a Leaf, he won’t be having an AAV in the double digits. It’d be like a wide receiver asking for as much as the star QB

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Matthews benefits from pressure to appease his camp as a franchise player and 1st-overall pick. Marner has proven his worth (61, 69, pace for 99 points). Because they paid Nylander $6.95M AAV, Marner should receive middle ground (around $9M AAV) at least.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Would Marner be ok to sign for $9M on a shorter deal than Matthews (3 years or less)? He can renegotiate sooner and would likely leapfrog the Matthews number, essentially making the same total $ over time. Could help the Leafs keep this group together for several runs at the Cup.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Pierre, why are long term deals viewed as benefitting the team rather than the player, especially someone with injury problems (Matthews)? Long term deals protect the player from career ending injuries. Depending on contract structure, also protects player from lockout.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Won’t be able to do Marner without very serious move(s) if Big 3 are Matthews, Tavares and Marner.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
As of right now, the leads have 7.5 mil in cap space for next year with 14 players under contract. Subtract Horton you have 12.8 mil available with 13 players signed. If you give Marner 9 mil a year, that leaves 3.8 million available with 14 players signed. Not enough for them.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Fact is that the Leafs can only roll with 2 lines and that's not enough to be true contenders. Need all 4 lines to play a fast and physical game for playoff success. They're not even in the same category as the Preds, Jets, Lightning, Caps or Pens

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
Yeah well marner is their best all around player and they just gave a guy 11.6 mil and he hasn’t even had a 70 point season. I love it as a bruins fan because either they go into cap hell or they lose their best player.

In reply to @PierreVLeBrun
I think Marner tipped his hand somewhat today saying the only thing that matters was that he’s at training camp. So perhaps an internal deadline in his corner, don’t think he’s taking three Nylander route.

Wow, who’d thought? #Leafs trot out good news in #AM34 signing and @dfeschuk rolls out a controversy before the ashes are even cold. No surprise there. #hack should be out of a job. #ToxicMedia
