All these comments bashing Romney for “too little, too late.” C’mon. This guy is standing up to tremendous pressure from his party and large chunk of his constituents to do the right thing. And it’s never too late to do the right thing.

It’s actually very often too late to do the right thing

The time to do the right thing was before kowtowing to a predatory lunatic with brain rot. The bar is truly subterranean for white people.

I watched Jeff Flake say pretty things too many times then vote the wrong way when it counted to not be a tad sceptical when Mitt takes the opportunity to stand up and say something. I'll be impressed if he does something.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
That's the thing though. They all just talk. Chagrin. Clutch pearls. Express concern, deep concern, astonishment, anguish. They never actually DO ANYTHING. The Senate has control. They block everything from Congress. So DO SOMETHING MITT.

Sure, Romney deserves praise. But words followed by no deeds are from Republicans are commonplace. Elijah Cummings signed subpoenas from his deathbed. But sure, let’s get a participation trophy for Romney.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Talk is cheap. His actions will define his legacy.

Rule 1 of making change: Do not punish people for doing what you want them to do.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Still feels very Jeff Flakey. If he wants to make an impact block judicial nominees. DO something.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Is he supporting the impeachment hearings? No? Romney is great at saying something approximating the right thing, and then doing absolutely nothing about it.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Until he votes for impeachment/conviction in the senate, I’ll reserve final judgment.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
The only person talking in a sea of cowards shouldn’t get attacked, maybe encourage more talking.

The test for Republicans is not what they say re Syria: It is whether they vote to convict Trump on impeachment.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Amen. Us Democrats are going to have to build a bridge to SOME Republicans after the jailings and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Happy to work with Romney.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
It’s not too late but it is too little. Why do we grade GOPers on a curve? “Pressure?” He’s a multimillionaire retiree in a safe Senate seat. What does he have to lose? His niece’s approval? He should call for Trump to be removed from office.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Never too late to do the next right thing. Thank you to @MittRomney, a person of integrity. Junior senator, elder statesman. The country — and the Party of Lincoln — needs more like him.

Absolutely. I welcome everyone taking a stand. It's never too late. We are stronger together.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
That was a hell of a speech, the only bright spot in his horrible day.

Yeah, no. It’s always a good time to *start* doing the right thing but he’s still responsible for all the times he didn’t. If he believes what he’s doing now is right then he knows what he did before was wrong. And people are dead now; lots of them.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
The Time is Always Right to do What is Right.. MLK

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
My Senator Murkowski is moving (slowly) along a parallel path. AK is a deep red state & she’s taking hits but she IS a Senator & like Romney in a position to do something. It would be great if this happened 13,000 lies ago, it didn’t. So let’s encourage the foothold we have.

[extended fart noises]

(i do think patting them on the back in the short term is a good idea insofar as having as many of them do too little too late as possible is politically useful and they clearly place pavlovian reward over any actual morality but come the fuck on)

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
When he "does the right thing", call for impeachment, then let's talk. Until then, it's just talk.

Wow, @SarahLongwell25-Thank's for pointing out the incredible courage of billionaire, industry-destroying, vulture-capitalist governor/son of governor Presidential candidate white/Mormon/plutocrat in the safest Senate seat in the universe dipping his gilded toe into controversy.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Never been a fan of Mitt's but I am a fan of "anyone" in the Republican party that has the courage to stand up to Trump.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Tell that too the Kurds who are mourning their loved ones. Tell that to the immigrants who’ve been separated from their children. Tell that to those who’ve had loved ones killed because of the hatred being spewed. Give me a break. This was all predictable and they said nothing!!

I’d go along with that. Time to forgive some past transgressions in the interest of expeditiously getting the orange grifter moron outta there

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
You are right. It is never too late to do the right thing. You are 100%

I’m so fucking sick of people telling me to be nice to a bunch of spineless Republicans who didn’t have the balls to stand up to injustice sooner.

People are dying and you want me to hold their hand while they barely muster up some courage to say WORDS?? Fuck right off.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Utah isn't a 45 stronghold...especially the SLC area...Mitt's seat is very safe, 5 yrs out...he isn't taking a huge leap here...plus, unlike Rubio, Cruz, Graham, Mitt doesn't need the income or perks...he's rich. So..yeah...I'm glad he spoke out but it isn't super hard for him.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
There cannot be a GOP after this. If Romney wants to lead a new conservative party, fine. Let future generations tour a GOP museum to remind them of what has happened and why we all, as Americans, will never, ever do this again.

I roundly applaud Senator @MittRomney. It took tremendous courage. And I warmly welcome more Republicans to do likewise.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
I'm laying off of @SenatorRomney because I want others to follow but make no mistake....there's IS such a thing as being too late, and we're past it...people are dying, and our democracy is hanging by a thread.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
No gold stars for standing up to a maniac. Mitt is a selfrighteous “religious” man who has disgraced the principles of his faith and sat by counting his cash while children were torn from their mothers at the border. Now this. I’m a Christian, these matters are not a close call

I have to agree with Sarah here. Everyone keeps asking "when will a Republican speak up" and then every time one does the same people attack them.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Milquetoast murmurings of disapproval don’t count as ‘standing up’. If he does eventually take a stand, and speak out forcefully, and vote against his party, well good for him.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Yes. As I said when I RTed the full speech: hey, GOP? This is what a leader looks like - and I say that as a dyed-in-the-wool yellow dog Democrat. Democracy depends on well-informed, reasonable debate from all sides. Equally, it depends on acts such as this.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
And then in the next breath the “too little too late” crowd will wonder why more republicans won’t speak out againstTrump

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
The Kurds may disagree.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
I’d be a lot more sympathetic to Romney if he hadn’t prostituted himself for the Sec of State job but still i’ll take any Republican of stature willing to stand up for what is right & true at this time. The alternative is Meadows, Jordan and Paul, take your pick.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
It is never too late- we need someone in the GOP I’m congress to stand up and speak out. He did. God bless him for it.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
What “right thing” is he actually *doing* though? Words are nice, but actions are what we need now.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Absolutely!!! We all need to create a safe space for Senate Repub to do the right thing and support them. If we don't, Trump wins....

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
I don’t like Romney but you’re right. You’ve got to applaud him for this.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
The party hates him as much as it hated his father. When I was supporting mitt for potus, I got a bigger beating from fellow republicans infected with the tea party virus. I would ask why, basically he is not a Christian, too liberal and my fave, too smart.

I agree with this. I’ve been guilty of doing it too but right now, we don’t need to be bashing ANY Republican who speaks up on ANY topic (except Lindsey Graham - fvck that guy).

I don’t care how late in the game people think this is. It’s time the rest of them got behind closed doors and agreed as a group to stand against Trump. Lying is not going to work. Not this time.

Correct. Folks we have to give them an #OFFRAMP they can take a little shame but don't go digging two graves..

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Right. We gotta let the anger go when people finally come to the light. Folks are way too eager to hurl stones, and they're throwing them at the wrong people. Anybody who wants to protest the destruction of our country is on my team, I don't care how long it took them to get here

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Nope. Talk is cheap. He’s done this before. “Stern words.” Mittens needs to DO something.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
We'll take sanity whereever we can get it. It is a very rare commodity with Republicans in these, some of the darkest days, in the history of our democracy.

I agree! ❤️ It's hard... but we can't demand Republicans stand up, then bash them for not doing it sooner. Mitt made a long, painful speech that I believe he meant. We'll see how he votes in the future... THEN slam him!
#Romney

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Agree. It's never too late. And when I'm tempted to bash folks, I've increasingly been thinking #WhatWouldElijahDo. I think he would welcome Romney's words.

Please don’t confuse “saying” and “doing.”

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Romney is a more polished & more slick version of the classic corrupt & spineless reTHUGlican. He said he would've voted for Rapey Kavanaugh. He has voted w/ trump 79% of the time per 538.com. Romney has stayed silent for 3 years. Don't be fooled - he's no hero.

There might be some Kurdish families that feel differently.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
K what’s he gonna do so

TRUE. We certainly can use all the help we can get & Republican voices are more likely to persuade other Republicans.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
That’s like giving an atta boy” to that person who is always late to work & calls out sick every Friday & Monday

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Sorry, other than some words in a speech what, exactly, is he *doing*?

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
In the battle ahead, were going to need everyone who's willing to fight.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
I agree! Frustrating that it's taken so long, but people have been screaming for Republicans to stand up and say something, so they must be recognized when they finally do.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Standing against ethnic cleansing shouldn’t be on a sliding scale. You should do better, too.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
We're at a point in runaway political tribalism where the outrage addicted "base" on each side doesn't want the other, or their own, to be better. We're thrilled by the other's debasement, and delighted by our own exceeding it in reprisal or preemption. Revulsion's a pretense.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
It is often too late to do the right thing: "... Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

In reply to @SarahLongwell25

It’s never too late to do the right thing. It’s just too late if you want credit for it. But you can always do the right thing.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Too little, too late? Dear America: You could have had a great man as president of the United States. You could have chosen someone who saw the geopolitical realities we face today a long time ago. #MittRomney

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
At least one GOP Senator has the courage of their convictions...the rest are craven, gutless and electorally expendable.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
True! (But it’s also too little and too late.)

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Lol what is he in danger of? Losing his senate seat and retiring to wealth? Some of the members of his party liking him somewhat less?

In this case it is absolutely too late. There is a goddamn genocide going on.

He's a rich white man with nothing to lose, and he's not using that power. I'm not going to give him a participation trophy for starting to be troubled about something that is literally affecting people's lives

Yes, he did the right thing. Actually, in Utah there isn't much enthusiasm for Trump.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Said from the start it’s critical to welcome GOP voices to match ours for Trump’s removal. It gains nothing to berate/belittle them. Why should others dare break their silence if we attack them? Welcome all who defy Trump/GOP! *The innocent don’t fear the truth but Trump does*

Go @MittRomney This is your moment. Enlist the @GOP with a conscience. @lisamurkowski for one.

Apologist much.T/F_CKING GOP, CABINET & AIDES ARE ALL GUILTY OF/RESPONSIBLE FOR GENOCIDE via PARTY CORRUPT over ethics law country & humanity. W/o thier constant support bar NOTHING there'd be no US/TRUMP SPONSORED KURD GENOCIDE
Now they claim sanity? Romney's out to save his ass

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Dear @LindseyGrahamSC: please consider this. It’s never too late to do the right thing.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
His oath is to the Constitution, not to his party.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
No, he's all talk. He will cave to Trump and the Party' interests every time. Look at his record.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Im in Mitt district and i love him

K. Let us know when he starts doing it and stops just talking about doing it.

Wow If you are an American you stand up for the Constitution of the United States of America and not for a person that has violated the Constitution. It should be country over party

Yet he can’t stand up to Putin for abusing Mormons. Family values? What family?

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Agreed, hard to knock Mitt when he’s the only Senator calling Trump out at all.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
It's a good start. Let's hope, though, that it's not just a one off and that he falls back into the fold next week.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
“It’s never too late to do the right thing.” Bingo @SarahLongwell25. Those that change their minds for the better need to be applauded, not chastised because if mocked, what incentive does one have to ever change their mind for the better again? #Forgiveness

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Welcome, Mitt! Bring your friends!

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
I am ecstatic that Romney did what he did. I would like to see him lead a return to the GOP that I remember, but we are decades away from that. The GOP is all Birchers now.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Lead us from the Trump abyss

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
He hasn't done shit. Call me when he does & we can talk about redemption.

Get back to me when he publicly supports impeachment and casts a vote for conviction in the Senate. Until then, it's all just words.

Thank you, Senator. Keep standing up to the incompetent President. The world is grateful for decent Americans’ resistance.

Agreed. I volunteered for a month to make sure Obama defeated Romney in 2012, but his speaking out now is genuinely meaningful. Would that more Republicans would do likewise.

In reply to @SarahLongwell25
Hell yes. We need 20 of them to remove him. If we berate him, no one else will follow.
